SAN FRANCISCO -- Colt McCoy wrapped up the 49ers' backup quarterback on Sunday night, coach Jim Harbaugh said.
"I feel real good about Colt as the backup quarterback," Harbaugh said after the 49ers' 34-14 victory over the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday night at Candlestick Park.
"He reiterated that to me, too," McCoy said.
McCoy confirmed he agreed to new contract terms for the 2013 season on Saturday night. One day later, he completed 11 of 15 pass attempts for 109 yards. He also threw one interception.
McCoy was originally scheduled to earn $1.5 million this season with the 49ers before he agreed to a pay cut. McCoy remains signed through the upcoming season.
"It really happened quick," McCoy said. "This is a tremendous team. It's well-coached. It's a great organization from top to bottom. And when I was approached. This is personal, but I'm glad to be here. That's new to me. I'd never done anything like that. But it's all fine."
When the week began, McCoy had every reason to question whether he would still be a member of the team after the first round of cuts. He was not performing well, and he was struggling to learn the offense. But McCoy solidified his job with the 49ers with a good week of practice, a decision to lower his salary and a solid performance Sunday night.
"Jim (Harbaugh) and I had a great week. We talked and we met a lot," McCoy said. "Between us, I think we figured each other out a lot better.
"I hadn't performed the way I know I can't perform. I hadn't picked up the offense as well as I'd like to."
Suddenly, the competition at the 49ers' quarterback position is for the No. 3 job. Rookie B.J. Daniels completed two of three pass attempts for 30 yards, while veteran addition Seneca Wallace completed both of his attempts for 27 yards.
Scott Tolzien, who was limited in practices last week with a minor injury, did not see action.
