Three shotgun quarterbacks

Three shotgun quarterbacks

It’s too early to take stock of the quarterbacks, so I’ll just give an observation.

The three top QBs on the training camp roster – Alex Smith, Colin Kaepernick, and Jeremiah Masoli – are all most comfortable throwing the ball from the shotgun.

Each guy played strictly in shotgun or shotgun-like offenses in college. Smith ran the spread, Kaepernick ran the pistol, and Masoli ran the option.

When you think of West-Coast-offense quarterbacks, you usually think of quarterbacks who operate from under center, yet Harbaugh hand-picked three shotgun guys. What does that mean?

My gut feeling is Harbaugh and Roman’s offense will not look like a classic West Coast offense, it will look like something new and innovative. I’m talking about shotgun play-action plays and designed quarterback runs to keep the defense off balance, things more associated with college offenses.

Harbaugh and Roman will be able to get away with these trick plays for a few reasons – the pre-snap shifting will confuse the defense, and the rest of the talent on the roster is set up to succeed from the shotgun as well.

Both Anthony Dixon and Kendall Hunter rushed from shotgun, one-back formations in college, and Frank Gore is certainly good enough to succeed in these formations as well.

We may not see the really creative stuff early, since team is only in mid-May form according to Harbaugh. But they are certainly something to watch for as the season goes on.

49ers fourth-round RB Kendall Hunter has been "engulfed by onrushing defenders" at times in early-camp pass protection drills.
Hunter was a willing blocker at Oklahoma State, but his 5'7/199 size could be an issue early in his NFL career. CSN Bay Area's Matt Maiocco, always reliable on 49ers news, suggests it could be tough for Hunter to get offensive snaps behind Frank Gore and Anthony Dixon.

Jim Harbaugh on changing the culture of a team that has suffered in recent years: "People like the word 'culture.' That seems to be the big buzz word from everybody, but to me it's more attitude. Our attitude is to do as many things right as we possibly can.

SANTA CLARA -- Safety Dashon Goldson will sign a one-year contract with the 49ers, Pro Football Talk reported Monday morning, citing a league source.

Goldson visited the New England Patriots on Sunday, according to multiple reports. The 49ers were prepared to make Goldson their highest-paid free agent after the NFL lockout concluded but were unable to agree on a five-year contract. Goldson and his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, were expecting a long-term contract that averaged $7 million annually, a source told CSN Bay Area.

With Goldson's return, the 49ers now have nine safeties on the squad. Veteran Donte Whitner is being relied upon to be the leader of the secondary. After the 49ers signed Whitner, it appeared as if Goldson would not be returning to the 49ers. He even wrote on Twitter: “Sorry guys thanx for all ur support but not gonna be back. See ya.”

The move appears to force Reggie Smith, slated to start at free safety, to a backup role. Smith started the last seven games of the 2010 season and had gotten off to a strong start through the first eight practices of training camp.

None of the other safeties on the roster is guaranteed a roster spot: Madieu Williams, Taylor Mays, C.J. Spiller, Curtis Taylor, Chris Maragos and Colin Jones. Special-teams contributions will play a large role in the reserve positions. The 49ers have notified the other 31 teams in the league that Mays is available in a trade.

Dashon Goldson is returning to 49ers on a 1 year deal. It's also been said that Reggie Smith has an undisclosed injury. Maybe the injury is serious and that's why we brought back Dashon

Report: FS Goldson re-signs with 49ers

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, FS Dashon Goldson has decided to return to the 49ers after spending Sunday meeting with the Patriots in New England. The unrestricted free agent reportedly agreed to a one-year, $2 million deal.

Goldson, a four-year NFL veteran, has started all 32 games the past two seasons for the 49ers. He had 80 tackles, one sack and one interception last season.

The way we see it

Daily team observers had thought Goldson was a lock to become the Niners' fifth defensive starter to leave the team, so his decision to re-sign comes as a pleasant surprise. Look for him to probably retain his starting job at free safety, with newly acquired Madieu Williams becoming a backup.

York's Message: 'In Harbaugh We Trust'

SAN FRANCISCO, CA - JANUARY 07: Jim Harbaugh speaks at a press conference where he was introduced as the new San Francisco 49ers head coach at the Palace Hotel on January 7, 2011 in San Francisco, California. (Photo by Ezra Shaw/Getty Images)

If you believe Jed York, the 49ers did go out and get a new, free-agent quarterback for this season.

His name is Jim Harbaugh.

York, the team’s president, told the San Francisco Chronicle Sunday that bringing in Harbaugh as head coach was much more important than going out and making a big splash in free agency.

York’s message: Don’t worry about the Alex Smith you’ve seen in years past, because this year’s model will be much better because of Harbaugh.

There was no need to go after Vince Young, Matt Hasselbeck or Donovan McNabb if the Niners could pair Harbaugh with a re-signed Smith.

“He sees a lot of potential in Alex,” York said of Harbaugh, “and he likes the fact that Alex has been there working with our guys in the off-season.”

True, Harbaugh has some grid cred with QBs. He’s coming from Stanford where Andrew Luck became a monster, and he coached up Josh Johnson at little University of San Diego into becoming an NFL pick.

But can he work wonders with Smith?

Publicly, Harbaugh has said Smith has been “thrown under the bus” by his own team and “maligned by the home town fans,” yet likes the QB’s character.

We’ll see. The debut of the “new” Smith is just five days away, vs. the Saints on Friday night.

Around the NFC West: Aldon Smith update

Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee offers thoughts on the San Francisco 49ers' rookies. On first-round choice Aldon Smith: "Most young pass rushers try to out-quick their offensive tackle opponent by going to the outside, and in doing so they are easily pushed wide of the play. Smith, however, has a wicked inside move in which he uses his long powerful arms like battle axes to club away the offensive tackle's hands. Smith is far more powerful than most rookies, much less those enter the NFL as underclassmen. He's working on his flexibility and on playing in space, which he must do as an outside linebacker."

Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com looks at potential quarterback options for the 49ers. Maiocco: "I'm told if there's a quarterback who shakes free or becomes available that Jim Harbaugh likes, the club will make an effort to get him. The No. 1 name on everybody's list is Tampa Bay backup quarterback Josh Johnson, who played for Harbaugh at the University of San Diego and greatly desires a chance to play for him again. Johnson enters the final year of his contract, and there are no long-term hopes of being a starter with Josh Freeman firmly entrenched as the Buccaneers' starter. There would be hope for Johnson if he came to the 49ers, as Alex Smith is signed to just a one-year deal and Colin Kaepernick is promising but very raw."
