Nick Diaz vs Jeff Lacy: Contract Signed For Fall Showdown

The hottest fighter in the mixed martial arts landscape right now is Stocktons own, Nick Diaz. He is currently riding an 11-fight win streak and has been mentioned as a potential super-fight candidate to face-off against UFC welterweight champion George St. Pierre at the end of 2011.

Due to the structuring of Diaz's contract with MMA outfit, Strikeforce, he is in a unique position where he can contractually pursue a professional boxing career in addition to his mixed-martial arts title reign.

While rumors of opponents such as former champions Fernando Vargas and Roy Jones Jr. have been floated around, neither mans team have yet solidified a contract with the young champion.

A few moments ago, former IBF super-middleweight champion & devastating knockout artist, Jeff "Left Hook" Lacy, officially signed on the dotted line to square off against Diaz in the Fall of 2011.

Lacy possesses the type of dangerous punching power in both hands that can end the double digit win streak of the rugged Northern California champion.

Don Chargin states, "This is a very dangerous fight for both men. Not only is this fight dangerous but stylistically it is very intriguing. I expected more resistance from fight fans and media in regards to this match-up but its amazing as to the hundreds of calls and e-mails I've received from fans on both sides wanting to see this match-up take place. I've received more than a few inquiries from some other very high-profile boxers that want to step up and fight Nick. Its been a real whirlwind."

Chargin continues, "I've been around boxing for quite some time and I've seen a lot of great, tough fighters in my six decades within the sport. I believe that if Nick had been one of those kids who had picked up boxing from a youth, he'd undoubtedly be a world-champion today. Sometime within the next 2 weeks I'll be personally making the trek to Cesar Gracies gym to setup a private, closed door sparring session between Nick and a few nameless top-level contenders I have in mind."

Can Jeff Lacy refocus his career to regain the once promising glory that lingered at his fingertips just a few short years back?

Can Nick Diaz's granite chin withstand the devastating punching power of arguably the hardest punching 168-pound fighter on the planet?

These questions will definitely be answered before the end of 2011 as the fight titled, "Breaking History" is fairly self-explanatory.

lacy is definitely shot to shit but I don't know, after watching that diaz sparring video one would imagine lacy at least has a shot, if not the favorite to win.

but he's lost 3 of his last 4, and his previous fight he lost to some bum with a record of 23-19-7.

Nick is going to lose.
Lacy has never been stopped and 3 out of his 4 losses were to Jermain Taylor, Joe Calzaghe, and Roy Jones Jr. That isn't really a weak list of people to lose to.

The only way I see Nick winning is maybe if it's a 4 round fight. No way he goes 10 winning 6 of them. Eventually he would get caught.

Even though Lacy sucks balls these days i still dont know what Nick is capable of doing in the ring and is slow as fuck himself. I still think Lacy will beat him

might of meant something 5 years ago but jeff's left hook aint shit these days and he's had a couple surgeries on his shoulder
That's what I mean by Western Union punches. Daley turned his entire body into that left, no set up to get it there just an obvious body turn into the left hook. I know MMA is different and the striking standards are skewed because of everything you have to take into account but as shitty as Lacy's been lately he should be able to set Diaz up for a KO.

Everyone's knocking the loss to Dhafir Smith who's been in tough nearly his entire career and has pulled off more than one upset. Diaz hasn't proven he can beat someone like Smith in boxing so why make it seem as if that's an indication of what Diaz is gonna do to him?

I'm confused as hell, Nick Diaz wants a big payday, I don't see a big pay day coming for him by fighting a way past his prime shot Jeff Lacy. In his last fight Nick was payed $175,000 before all the sponsor money and bonuses, he probably at least pulled $300,000 if not more. Right now UFC is highly considered a PPV main event for Nick against GSP which with base pay, PPV bonuses, sponsor money on a UFC show, etc would probably pull Nick at least a million dollars. I doubt Nick is gonna even make what he made fighting Paul Daley if he takes this Jeff Lacy fight.

Has Nick smoked himself retarded?

Ward Shares Thoughts On Sparring With Diaz

Current world champion boxer Andre Ward says he’d be as excited as anyone to see Strikeforce welterweight champion Nick Diaz step into a boxing ring against Jeff Lacy later this year.

That said, he has no idea how well Diaz would do.

Ward, who is currently ranked the No. 8 pound-for-pound boxer in the world by ESPN.com, has a unique insider’s look at Diaz’s boxing skills. The two California-based fighters have sparred one another multiple times and they’re trainers know each other well.

But even though Ward considers Diaz a friend, he’s not willing to guarantee Diaz would do well in professional boxing. Ward says that if any mixed martial artist can make the crossover succesfully, Diaz is at the top of the list. But it’s going to be tough.

“I appreciate and admire [Diaz’s] courage,” Ward told ESPN.com, while in Las Vegas to watch Manny Pacquiao’s recent win over Shane Mosley. “It remains to be seen how well he’ll do, though.

“Nick has good hands, some of the best hands in MMA. But professional boxing is totally different. Totally different.”

According to Ward, the two have sparred on “six or seven different occasions,” always for multiple rounds.

When asked how Diaz fared during the sparring sessions, Ward smiled and refused to go into details -- although he did say Diaz has been a terrific addition to his camp whenever he’s there.

“I can’t really talk about that,” Ward said. “That’s something fighter’s don’t reveal out of respect for each other. It was good work though. He’s a southpaw and he just keeps on coming. It’s definitely good work.”

The proposed fight between Diaz and Lacy would take place this fall, although a specific date and venue have yet to be announced. Under his contract with Strikeforce, Diaz is allowed to enter the boxing ring in 2011, although his manager Cesar Gracie has said he would forego that opportunity to fight current UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre.

Diaz has one professional boxing match in his career, a unanimous decision win in a four-round affair in 2005. Lacy holds a professional record of 25-4 (17 KOs). He is a former IBF super middleweight champion but has lost three of his last four fights.

Because of his recent slide, some have all-but written off Lacy at this point in his boxing career. But while he doesn’t appear a threat to regain his world title, he’d be a clear favorite over Diaz.

“Lacy is dangerous,” Ward said. “I don’t know what everyone is talking about with Lacy. He is dangerous and he’s a very difficult fight for Nick. Jeff is a friend of mine and Nick is a friend of mine. I just want to sit back and watch it. It remains to be seen how it will all work out.”

There is no promotion that can pay their champions multi-million dollar pay days and have 20+ shows a year. The last two Pac fights, the promotion that put those on, were they the same promotion and if they were how many more multi-million dollar pay days did they have that same year?

Maybe I am wrong here, but can someone find out, how many fighters Top Rank promotions paid last year and their total payout for the year? Also how much of that went to their top guys?

Then the UFC, find out, how many fighters UFC promotions paid last year and their total payout for the year? Also how much of that went to their top guys?

and not sure if Top Rank does co-promotions, but if so, then we would have to adjust for that as well.

Also let's not forget, just because MMA is big right now, it is still an infant compared to how long boxing has been around.

Also another note, the UFC undercard fighter pay has been steadily increasing, while I see boxing undercards have seemed to stall. Now this could be wrong, I am just going off what I have seen in the past.

are boxing undercard fighters paid really well? 2-0-6 or anyone else how much does your average undercard fighter make?

obviously big main eventers make more than main event mma guys but i doubt there is such a big difference in the lower fighters.
