talent isnt measured by popularity. if this post was about 50 cent and nelly having a beef, there would be 50 responses. are they really that talented?

theres a quote from immortal technique - "if you sell a million records, its got nothing to do with luck, it just means that a million people are stupid as fuck"

i knew when i posted this most ppl on here wouldnt be able to appreciate the skill in what theyre hearing (if they even heard it), but i just figure maybe one person will hear it, like it, and add something new to their music collection.

as far as talent, im just saying to make the hip hop that al howard makes, takes alot more skill than the shit that most rappers out there put out. try to write a track about the shit al howard talks about and with all the metaphors and symbolism (and at the speed that he spits it), and then try to make one about banging and pimpin and shit. see which one is harder to do

i dont know, if what im saying is ignorant, let me know where im wrong in what im saying, im interested to know what others think

if you can rap you should be able to rap about anything(if you choose) Pun used to read sections of the encyclopedia then rap on the spot, .Rap is entertaining and some aint trying to be schooled or preached to. What are you rapping for the money? or for the love of hip hop , or both or do those options exist? there should be a way that you satisfy listeners by staying true to yourself and giving them what they want, its a fine line that will make or break your goals.

yeah i hear you. anyone could rap about whatever they want and it could still be tight. i like listening to shit like al howard, but still love listening to guys like mac dre or even a guy like andre nickatina just as much.

these two guys like so many rappers today will pretty much openly say in their raps that they love money, and that money itself is a huge motivation, maybe the biggest thing that motivates them to make music. thats fine, if it sounds good, ill still listen to it if its tight.

but i still realize the fact that a rapper like al howard (theres many more, but hes the reason this topic got started so ill keep using him as the example) has much more substance in his raps, and overall is just more talented rap music. all rap is some type of reflection of life. but theres some rap thats just alot more deep and breaksdown elements of life in general alot more than the majority of rap music. and then theres even things like the fact that howard can rap so much complexity so fast - thats just talent

i asked this earlier, but ill kinda reword it. listen to a mac dre track and listen to an al howard track. which one do you think took more time or just brain excercise to make?
theyre both rap music, i just truly think one is alot more talented than the other

actually to me an mc and a rapper are different, mitch is a rapper the thing is this forum in my opinion doesnt necessarily embrace mcs, notice if a poll is took of who is the tightest certain rappers names come up.Me listening to the rass kass's and the canibus's as well,...it would show that the ones in the poll are below average( way below) evryone wants to be a rapper, and some get by with gimmicks that overshadow there lack of creativity, unfortunatley, that has not been good for the image of hip hop/rap, notice when someone puts an album out when they promote it ,there selling points are features and production credits and there talent becomes secondary, there almost saying... buy my album cuz I got c-bo, yuk, the game, and quik did a beat, jelly roll as well. what is that saying about his/her skills, it just shows that they had some finances to get verses and beats....

i agree with all that, but what are you saying as far as talent and this thread?
you said earlier if this guy (al howard) is so talented thered be more replies, but what youre saying here partly answers why there arent so many replies to his music
but why else do you think this is. is it his jazzy funk type music he raps to? the content of his rap? his delivery? you think ppl dont like that type of stuff, or you just think hes not talented? just curious

I aint never heard of al howard, but that doesnt mean he isnt talented,Certain kinds of hip hop are a niche market,( I was just clownin on the replies ..kinda). Take canibus for example as far as a lyricist he is at the top(in my opinion). But even the labels cant put him on a bigger level, that doesnt mean there isnt a market, but with todays rap consumers its not a one size fits all, you cant try and sell meat to vegetarians, and this board(for the most part) is more street orientated.I was working with a guy who was in the killafornia group with chiil, eiht, tray dee, and producers who went on to do bigger things.Well this guy also had a deal on the table with mc ren and another partner.(his problem is he cant see it as a business (doesnt want to rap about this and that) he battled chino xl even. he can make songs so deep and multiple rhmes in each bar deep vocab, but I cant fuck wit him cause he is to set in his ways and , I would hAVe a harder time making any money.I respect him for staying true to "hip hop" but I feel you should get a foot in the door then throw in some of what you like, business is like a relationship- you gotta be willing to compromise at some point to be sucessful( for the most part.
