Exclusive: EliteXC signs middleweight prospect Paul Bradley

Elite Xtreme Combat has signed two-time All-American wrestler Paul Bradley to a contract, ProElite.com (SamCaplan.ProElite.com) has confirmed through Bradley’s manager, Mike Camp.

Terms of the contract and a possible debut date for Bradley are not yet known.

Bradley, who is featured in FiveOuncesOfPain.com’s MMA Prospects section, improved his record to 6-0 after recording a first round TKO over D.J. Watkins on March 15 during a Destiny Fights show in Florida.

Widely regarded as a top middleweight prospect, Bradley was even reported by FiveOuncesOfPain.com, MMAjunkie.com, and Yahoo! Sports to have been chosen as a cast member for the upcoming seventh season of “The Ultimate Fighter” reality television show on Spike TV.

Urijah Faber vs. Jens Pulver WEC fight confirmed for June 1

The wait is over as the WEC finally confirmed the date for arguably its biggest fight ever.

Urijah “The California Kid” Faber (20-1-0) will defend his featherweight title against MMA legend and former UFC lightweight champion, Jens “Little Evil” Pulver (22-8-1), at the Arco Arena in Sacramento, Calif., on June 1.

Although Faber is regarded as one of the top 145-pounders in the world, Pulver is undefeated in the division (8-0), submitting Cub Swanson in 31 seconds during his WEC debut back in December 2007.

Miguel Torres (33-1-0), fresh off a dominating performance against Chase Beebe to earn the 135-pound strap, will be on the card as well. He will make his first WEC bantamweight title defense against Mexican slugger Manny Tapia (10-0-1), who is coming off a split decision victory over Antonio Banuelos at WEC 32.

WEC 34: “Faber vs. Pulver” will air at 9 p.m. ET on Versus.

This should be one the biggest nights in the short history of the WEC, and it’s even a bigger plus for it to take place live on Versus. It’s hard to beat watching an MMA legend go against the future of the sport on free TV, right?

Exclusive: EliteXC signs former NFL player Bobby Jones

Elite Xtreme Combat has signed former NFL player Bobby Jones to a contract, ProElite.com (SamCaplan.ProElite.com) has confirmed exclusively through Jones’ manager, Mike Camp.

An undefeated heavyweight with a record of 2-0, Jones first made his MMA debut on August 24, 2007 during a Fight Fest show in Ohio, where he recorded a TKO over Darby Hodge at just 0:34 into round 1. He followed up his successful debut with a second victory this past January when he recorded another TKO in the first round, this time against William Clifford.

Jones is a graduate of Penn State and in addition to lettering in football for the university as an offensive lineman, he was also a member of the wrestling team as a senior. Additionally, Jones was also a high school wrestling champion.

After Penn State, Jones played one season for the New York Giants in 2002. He appeared in 11 games that year but was eventually released. He continued his pro football career with a brief stint in the Arena Football League and was also a high school teacher.

EliteXC's Hawaii Event Postponed to June

A Hawaiian-based EliteXC show tentatively planned for April 26 has been pushed back to June 14.

EliteXC Live Events President Gary Shaw first mentioned the possibility of the April event during a media conference call earlier this year.

However, according to fiveouncesofpain.com, the April show has been scratched completely and will be replaced by a June 14 date.

The organization has not yet announced a definite location or venue for the rescheduled event.

The June 14 event will likely feature a fight between highly ranked welterweight Jake Shields and veteran Drew Fickett. That fight was supposed to take place Saturday at the Strikeforce/EliteXC co-promoted show, but Shields pulled out of the event on Tuesday due to a back injury. Fickett could now be scratched from the event completely.

The June event will also feature a title fight between EliteXC lightweight champion KJ Noons and challenger Yves Edwards, a bout that was originally scheduled for April, according to The Fight Network.

Although not regulated by a state athletic commission, MMA has a fanatical following in Hawaii, where organizations such as ICON Sport thrive.

Matt Serra vs. George St. Pierre I was no fluke

It is crazy! Last year may have been an upset but, believe me, it was no fluke. What is a ‘lucky punch?’ Who do these people think I was trying to punch in the face if not Georges? Seriously – where did the luck come into it? I got him hurt and didn’t let him off the hook. Seriously, you tell me, if you aim at something, and then hit it time and time again, was it luck or did you just do what you were trying to do?… All the pressure is on GSP. He has to live up to all this BS about him, he has to step into the Octagon with a man who punched his lights out last time. I’m rematching a guy I beat inside one round, where’s the pressure? No-one is looking at me to do anything, for whatever reason, so there’s zero pressure on me.”

I would not have to repeat myself if heyzel would just post new stuff instead of something that has already been posted. And Robby2Slobby what is the purpose of posting something that has already been posted?
I just don't think there's a big deal.. And it can serve a purpose.. I mean, it's not like it's either of your guy's news.. You are getting it from other sites, and this thread can get like three pages in a day, so some people may not see all the things that have been posted.

I just think its kinda silly that you have a little feud with him over posting news that neither of you broke or anything like that.

I'm not saying its bad.. but people can also skim through the news that they already read, too.

I don't think its worth your effort to go back and find the link where you already posted, either.

DIAZ OUT; FICKETT STEPS IN TO FACE KIM

After a tumultuous week of matchmaking for the upcoming EliteXC and Strikeforce co-promoted event, MMAWeekly.com has learned from sources close to the fight that Nick Diaz is out of his bout with Jae Suk Kim for undisclosed reasons.

Drew Fickett will now step in and face Kim instead, as he was currently without a bout after Jake Shields dropped out of their planned title bout due to injury.

The exit of Diaz came suddenly after EliteXC had just released what was believed to be the final change to its upcoming Showtime card.

Jae Suk Kim will now face Drew Fickett in a fight that will take place at 170 pounds and will be a part of the televised portion of the show.

MMAWeekly.com was unable to secure any further details as to why Diaz had to drop out of his bout, but will follow up as more information becomes available.

COUTURE INTERESTED IN GRAPPLING KURT ANGLE

Embattled UFC heavyweight champion Randy Couture would be interested in a submission-grappling match with former Olympic Gold Medalist and WWE wrestler Kurt Angle, according to sources within Xtreme Couture, but as of now interest is all that can be shown.

Rumors began circling recently when Angle mentioned the possibility of competing against Couture in a grappling contest. HDNet president Mark Cuban even confirmed that his cable network would broadcast the bout if it ever came to fruition.

According to Sean O’Heir, public relations director at Xtreme Couture, the bout interests Couture, but “Randy has made it quite clear that he would only pursue such a match, if at all, when he is contractually free to do so.

“At this time, the discussions are merely preliminary and no details of an actual match have been set nor agreed to,” O’Heir commented in a statement to MMAWeekly.com.

No further details have come from Angle or the promotion interested in putting the bout together.

EliteXC, CSAC at Odds Over Diaz Removal

March 27, 2008
by Josh Gross ([email protected])

Nick Diaz (Pictures) will not fight Saturday night in San Jose, Calif., nor will he collect the $50,000 purse he was set to receive for his bout against South Korea's Jae Suk Lim (Pictures).

California State Athletic Commission executive officer Armando Garcia made that determination Wednesday.

Why? It depends on whom you ask.

"He did not turn in his medical information in time for the fight," said Garcia, confirming an MMAWeekly report that Diaz was removed from the Showtime-televised card. "They were just turned in today."

Late Wednesday evening, however, EliteXC President Gary Shaw, who promotes Diaz, disputed Garcia's account.

"He never mentioned anything about late medicals," said Shaw. "And if there were late medicals it wasn't because of Nick Diaz and it wasn't because of EliteXC."

The issue, as described to him by Garcia, said Shaw, was Diaz's prescription for medical marijuana, which is legal in California based on the Compassionate Use Act of 1996.

"He's got a medical marijuana card," confirmed Diaz's manager Cesar Gracie (Pictures), who mentioned Attention Deficit Disorder as the cause for the prescription.

"Nick is a naturalist by heart," said Gracie. "He thinks Ritalin is an amphetamine. He thinks that's really bad for you. People with ADD are kind of hyper, so he has trouble sleeping. He got the medical marijuana card and he takes his pot to go to sleep and be more focused. It's completely legal in California. Voters voted it in. The commission is actually supposed to obey that, so this will probably open up a legal case. If it was something small, OK, f---- it, whatever. But if they're not even going to allow him to test clean, that doesn't make sense. That's overstepping their boundaries."

Completing paperwork on March 10 in the Los Angeles offices of Dr. Richard Gluckman -- in an effort to renew his license to fight in California, Diaz underwent a battery of tests including MRI, EKG, ophthalmological, neurological, bloodwork for HIV, Hepatitis B and C, and a comprehensive physical -- the 24-year-old from Stockton, Calif., noted his use of medical marijuana.

Not the first mixed martial artist to list marijuana as prescribed medication on CSAC forms, Diaz included the information, said Gracie, in case a positive test arose out of the CSAC's strict anti-doping regulations, which began almost one year ago. (Earlier this month, the California commission fined and suspended Toby Grear (Pictures), who cited the use of Marinol based on a medical marijuana prescription.)

Two and a half weeks later, Garcia said he first learned of Diaz's medical marijuana usage. As with any mention of prescribed medication taken by fighters applying for a license, Garcia said an investigation was required to determine the reason for the prescription.

"If you're a fighter and you know you're going to fight in a state that has a commission and they test for drugs -- they have a doping program -- you have to tell them way ahead of time, not three days before the weigh-in or the fight," Garcia said. "You have to give the commission the opportunity to evaluate your ailment and the reason you were prescribed a certain drug. And if you don't do that, you're risking not fighting."

Shaw, who said the responsibility for filing medicals to Sacramento rested with Dr. Gluckman's office, called Diaz's acknowledgment of marijuana usage "entrapment."

"He does what you ask him, and you punish him?" said a puzzled Shaw. "It's like if you have a Ferrari and a police officer gives you a speeding ticket before you turn the key.

"It wasn't about lateness because I say you definitely can't pull him off if your own doctor sent it in. We have guys getting licensed today, so you know it's an outright lie."

Garcia declined to comment on Shaw's recollection of their conversation.

Scheduled to appear on a televised bout on the undercard of Frank Shamrock (Pictures)'s tilt with Cung Le (Pictures), Diaz's ouster from the HP Pavilion-housed event forced EliteXC to put together a bout between Lim and Drew Fickett (Pictures), who was left without an opponent when Jake Shields (Pictures) dropped out Tuesday because of a back injury. (The winner between Fickett and Lim will fight Shields for the vacant EliteXC 170-pound title.)

Diaz should return to action on June 14 in Hawaii, said EliteXC Vice President Jared Shaw.

The brash 160-pounder is no stranger to mixing marijuana and MMA. In March of last year the Nevada State Athletic Commission suspended, fined and stripped Diaz of his win over Takanori Gomi (Pictures) after testing positive for THC levels more than three times the accepted limit.
