IFL: Taurosevicius Out of Fight with Palaszewski

Jim Miller will replace an injured Deividas Taurosevicius and take on Bart Palaszewski in a lightweight bout.
Miller, who has fought primarily on the East Coast and recently submitted UFC veteran Chris Ligouri earlier this month at a Ring of Combat show, was reported as being tapped as a replacement opponent against Marcus Aurelio at next week's UFC Fight Night 13. However Miller's contract with the IFL left him unable to fill in at the event.

Cyborg comments his victory at Sengoku

After a great victory at first edition of the new japanese event Sengoku, the athlete from Chute Boxe Evangelista Cyborg told TATAME about his victory by submission against Makoto Takimoto at 83kg category. “I did everything that I do on my training. Did the fight the way I wanted, holded on the Muay Thai and on the ground I did a position that i know well”, said Cyborg, after a great Muay Thai and Jiu-Jitsu exhibition, with a great hell-hook on the first round.

“I always want the submission. I didn’t saw many of his fights stand up and he came from Judo, so it’s natural to fight against him on the ground so i kept on the Muay Thai and when went to the ground, kept a good position and submitted him”, said the fighter, that praised the new event. “It’s a great event. I hope this event consolidates and open doors to many Brazilian fighters. I think it’s wonderful that came back to see the world’s MMA focus”, said.

'Razor' Rob McCullough: Baja Racing & Fighting

PDG: Let’s go back to your experience in the Baja 500. What was it like for you?
Rob: It was like climbing Mount Everest – that is one way that I heard someone put it. It was a great experience – once in a lifetime. It was pretty crazy. It was a grueling week of racing in the Baja.

PDG: What were you driving in the race?
Rob: I drove a Toyota Tundra – a stock full class. It was all tricked out by Camburg Racing in Huntington Beach. It looked like an average off-road truck that you’d get from a dealership, like it obviously had the lights on it, but it had some great suspension on it. It was a really nice truck.

PDG: How did it feel to get through the race; it’s a very popular event?
Rob: To be honest with you, I didn’t really know what I got myself into until I started mentioning it to people and they were like “Dude, that’s crazy – you can die!”

PDG: It’s crazy too because fans like to build jumps and traps and stuff.
Rob: Oh yeah, we hit a booby-trap. It was a bunch of silt – it’s like talcum powder and dirt. We got stuck in it up to our knees in the stuff and had to be pulled out.

PDG: You’re into other extreme sports, like snowboarding. How often do you go out doing other stuff like that, and does the fact that you are a pro fighter hinder you at all as far as those hobbies go?
Rob: Yeah, kinda. I probably would be doing it a lot more if [fighting] wasn’t my profession. Now when I go [snowboarding] it’s more carving and more away from doing jumps and stuff. I love going up to the mountains and doing that kind of stuff, but my schedule is so hectic now – and I have to think about the risk to reward factor. The last time I went snowboarding I went to Whistler Mountain in Canada. I was going through the snowboard park and I hit a rail and was going down it and thought “if I fall right now and hurt my wrist I’m done right now.” I started thinking about how much money I would lose and it took all the fun out of it. I went really slow [laughs].

PDG: Fighting fits in well with other things you like to do. Is it still a fun experience for you or is it becoming more of a career path?
Rob: It’s definitely still fun, and it’s also the thrill of competition. It’s fun to get in there; it’s almost like showing off. To me, it’s “oh, you think you’re better than me?” and it turns into a competition. People are like “that sounds dangerous, you’re going to get hurt.” No way, I don’t plan on getting hurt – I plan on hurting someone else. To me it is still way fun. Even if I didn’t get paid to do it, I would still be doing it somewhere.

PDG: Obviously MMA is your big focus, but you’re also a very good Muay Thai fighter. What kind of interest would you have getting in the ring, fighting some of the elite of Muay Thai?
Rob: I think it would be awesome. If the money is right I will fight anyone.

PDG: How about video games, do you play a lot and what kind of games do you like?
Rob: A while back I was really into it, but nowadays I’m so busy doing other stuff that I kind of got away from it. I was into [Grand Theft Auto] Vice City, I finished Hitman 2, and I played Medal of Honor a lot.

PDG: What kind of movies are you into?
Rob: I’m into really funny movies. I’m into Will Ferrell, he’s really funny. I also like Jim Carrey. I like those kinds of movies, I think they are hilarious and I could watch them over and over.

PDG: How about action movies, like Jason Statham movies with fighting – it’s obviously very different than real fighting, so what is it like for someone like you who actually fights?
Rob: When I was younger I was all into those kinds of movies, like Chuck Norris and Jet Li – I was just enthralled by them. Nowadays I just kind of break down their technique and I’m like “oh, c’mon man!” [laughs]. It kind of took the fun out of it when I learned how to fight well.

PDG: Have you heard of the new mixed martial arts movie coming out, called Never Back Down?
Rob: Yeah, I saw a commercial about it.

PDG: It appears to be kind of like The Fast and the Furious gears towards MMA. What are your thoughts on a mixed martial arts movie coming out, and marketing for an MMA movie which targets kids who wear price tags on their hats and pop their collars?
Rob: [Laughs] I think if the sport is growing that much that they will have a movie about it, that is awesome. I haven’t seen it so I don’t know how lame it is, but it kind of looked like a modern-day Karate Kid to me.

PDG: Original-Karate Kid or Hilary Swank-Karate Kid [laughs]?
Rob: [Laughs].

PDG: Are you looking to fight again soon?
Rob: Yeah, I just started training camp this week.

PDG: How do you feel going in after a big loss?
Rob: I’m really hungry now, and pissed. I was really upset with my performance and the fact that I lost – but mostly the way I lost. I focused so much on wrestling, and my wrestling was awesome, but the one thing I’m good at...........I hit him with a big shot and should have finished him, but I didn’t. With that being said, I just want to get back in there and hurt someone.

PDG: Did his hands surprise you at all?
Rob: You know what, I expected him to be throwing some. I’ve watched a few of his fights and he has good hands. I was just waiting for the takedown so much that I didn’t let my hands go at all. Everyone was like “wow, he looked really good,” but I didn’t do anything, so I made him look that much better. I’d love a rematch so I could pound his face in.

PDG: How many fights do you have left on your WEC contract?
Rob: I have one fight left.

PDG: Are you looking to stick with the WEC, or go with another promotion?
Rob: Yeah – some other organizations have been talking to me, but I will probably re-sign with them.

PDG: To wrap things up, is there anything else you would like to add?
Rob: I started my own clothing company, www.RazorClothing.tv – you can purchase some stuff there. I’ve been going around to other shops and shows and getting my stuff out there, so it’s pretty cool. Whatever I have to do to make money and stay in the fight game.

Golden Boy Walks Away from Affliction Partnership?

MMAPayout.com has received unconfirmed reports that Golden Boy Promotions has walked away from a rumored promotional partnership with Affliction Clothing due to control issues. Affliction's promotional effort has made a splash in the industry this year, reportedly signing several high profile free agents to lucrative contracts with large signing bonuses in addition to reportedly working with Oscar De La Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions.

It should be noted that MMAPayout.com has been unable to confirm the reports at this time. As a result, the above report should be considered rumor or informed speculation at best. It also bears mentioning that business deals such as this one are very fluid and can change quickly.

IFL-FSN Set to Extend Partnership

MMAPayout.com has confirmed that tomorrow the IFL will announce an extension of its partnership with Fox Sports Net. Season three of the IFL's weekly one-hour "Fight Night" program will air consistently on Saturday night at midnight local time across FSN's affiliates. The new season will debut on April 19 featuring the IFL World Grand Prix Finals from 12/29.

While not as sexy as recently announced network television deals, the new consistent time slot is a significant upgrade for the company on FSN. Previously, the program was hard to find due to scheduling differences and preemptions across the network's various regional affiliates. With a defined national time slot, the company can now promote its FSN programming more effectively. The Midnight Saturday night slot is also considered attractive because of its appeal to the 18-34 year old male demographic which is the key component of MMA viewership and the lack of competition from other sports programming.

Sources close to the deal have told MMAPayout.com that unlike speculation about other recent television deals, the IFL-FSN partnership is not a time buy, but rather a revenue sharing agreement. In comparison, NBC is reportedly offering a time buy at 2:00 AM on Saturday night for $2 million.

The IFL is also expected to add several more international clearances to its television portfolio later this week. The company's programming currently airs in over 70 countries world wide.

M-1 Mixfight Exclusive Interview with Gilbert Yvel

During Fedor's seminar in the Netherlands M-1 Mixfight Alexander Shuldyakov (Head of Information Department) and www.m1mixfight.com Editor Michael Mazur got an opportunity of catching up with Gilbert Yvel, famous Dutch MMA fighter with 45 bouts. Extreme efficiency of his vicious fists and kicks is proven with 28 (T)KOs in his 32 victories. Gilbert shared his thoughts about the upcoming fight against fellow Dutchman Alistair Overeem in this short interview

Michael Mazur: What are your feelings about working today together with Fedor?
Gilbert Yvel: It’s nice. He’s a very good fighter and a nice guy.

Michael: What are your thoughts on the upcoming fight against Alistair Overeem?
Gilbert Yvel: Well, I’m going to Las Vegas to train with Randy Couture and John Lewis. So I’ll finish him, it’s that simple.

Michael: So you’ll be training in Xtreme Couture, won’t you?
Gilbert Yvel: Correct.

Michael: Is that possible you’ll sign with M-1 Global?
Gilbert Yvel: I don’t know. We are in talks regarding the contract right now. But there’s a little problem, as I’m not allowed to fight in the States because I got some complications with the referee, so first of all I need to manage to get permission to fight in the USA.

Michael: But M-1 plans on holding the events not only in the US. Japan, Europe and Russia particularly have been named as the future hosts of M-1 shows…
Gilbert Yvel: I know. But every time you want to be free to choose where to fight and not to be banned somewhere.

Michael: What is your impression after having visited Saint Petersburg last year?
Gilbert Yvel: Oh, I’ve been there on several occasions already. I love this city. Felt great.

Michael: Well, thank you very much for you time. Good luck in your fight!
Gilbert Yvel: You’re welcome. Thanks.

Yoshihiro Akiyama Interview

Yoshihiro Akiyama was invited as a guest in an internet radio, "Tokyo Ochimasato RADIO" on Mar 22. He talked about his normal life and work in Korea. After the radio, he had a quick interview with DREAM.

- I suppose you enjoyed talking in the show?
Yes. I had fun a lot. I was surprised to see many people gathered around the studio when the show started.
- You said Korean broadcasting company, MBC, is with you and making a documentary?
MBC crew will be with me for a week from today. They film my life in Japan and make a documentary about me. I'm very appreciative of it.
- Did you say you release a CD?
Amazing, isn't it?
- I cannot wait! When is it in store?
I don't know any detail yet, but I heard it will be out in the middle of April.
- Did you go to Hawaii for training?
Yes. I went from the end of Feb to the beginning of March. I mainly spent time to do some weight training. I felt better and I think it was good for my body to train in warmer places like Hawaii.
- You said you are not sure if you fight in DREAM 2, and it depends on your injury. Could you tell me your condition?
I still have pain on my nose, although nose bones have been attached and are recovering. My knee is also getting better. I wonder why it is taking long time to be healed.
- DREAM 2 is coming in a month and a few days?
I am preparing to fight in DREAM 2. I'm mentally ready for sure and will announce my appearance in the event as soon as I recover from injuries.
- Do you have someone in your mind?
I will fight anybody. My goal is to fight in the final. I cannot lose before that and do my best.
- I hope you recover sometime soon.
I will have a good fight if I fight. I'm looking forward to fighting and I hope my fans expect a lot from me. Thank you for supporting me.

Mirko Interview with Kakutougitsushin

- Welcome back!
Yes, I'm back.
- How was your fight in Japan?
I felt good walking the passage to the ring, it felt like I knew what my fans were saying. I had never felt this way before though. It had a totally different atmosphere from the UFC, which everybody was united.
- Different from the UFC?
Yes. Japan is my second home as I told you many times. I think Japanese fans are the best who respect and support fighters. I'm appreciative.
- I suppose fans of DREAM are great because they are the former PRIDE fans.
Yes. Former PRIDE staff created this great event without resting. Fans who supported PRIDE gathered to this event to support and participate in this event, share laugh and booing... PRIDE was the best.
- Now PRIDE was started again as DREAM.
I lost consecutively in the UFC, was devastated mentally and physically. When I was wondering if I could get out from this, I felt like going home. I insisted to go back to Japan to get back my pride which I lost. Do you remember the gold medalist of the girl's wrestling of Athens Olympic?
- Are you talking about Saori Yoshida?
She had been an undefeated for a long time. At the time she had a record of 119-0, she lost by decision. I remember she has the same last name with my friend, Yoshida.
- Do you know her?
I saw her documentary which started from the day she lost. She broke down crying and couldn't even answer any questions. After that, she decided to go home and trained in her dad's wrestling gym to recover from her shock. My manager, Ken, recommended this video. Although I couldn't understand its narration in Japanese, I could tell that she realized where she came from through training with kids.... I really understood how she felt. Ken helped me to realize what I should do to recover. I realized that PRIDE was my roots as a fighter. PRIDE brought me lots of pleasure, pain, worries, fear and tears. I was supported by thousands of fans who gather and support me. That event was miracle.
- Miracle? I agree with you.
Yes. I felt this way not because the event was MMA and was produced in Japan. It's very hard to explain.

Reports: Baroni vs. "Ninja" Signed for EliteXC-CBS Event

Phil Baroni (10-9), who recently came up short in an ICON Sport title fight with Kala Hose, has signed on to fight Murilo "Ninja" Rua (15-8-1) at the May 31 EliteXC-CBS event.

The event, which will likely feature Kevin "Kimbo Slice" Ferguson in the night's main event, takes place at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. It'll be the first-ever MMA event to air on major U.S. network television.

News of the Baroni vs. Rua fight was first reported by the Internet radio show Cageside Live and has since been confirmed by Sam Caplan of ProElite.com and fiveouncesofpain.com.

Baroni, who dropped a fifth-round TKO to Hose on March 15, recently signed a multi-fight deal with ProElite, Inc., the parent company of EliteXC. However, with his loss to Hose, he's now dropped three of his past four fights.

Rua, EliteXC's first-ever middleweight champ, lost his belt to Robbie Lawler in September. He bounced back for a second-round submission of Xavier Foupa-Pokam at December's Cage Rage 24 show. It was his fourth win in his past five fights.

In addition to Ferguson and Baroni vs. Rua, the May 31 event will also feature a title fight between EliteXC middleweight champ Lawler and Scott Smith. While a guest panelist on this past weekend's edition of "Inside MMA," EliteXC matchmaker Jeremy Lappen also confirmed that Gina Carano is expected to be on the fight card.

Mark Cuban Talks HDNet Fights, Fedor, Randy Couture, And Much More

Mark Cuban recently responded via email to our good friends over at FightTicker.com to discuss his entry into MMA promotion and a variety of other issues. Below are some of the highlights of that correspondence:
Cuban On Co-Promoting With Other Big Name Promotions:

Pretty much everyone works [with] each other except for the UFC. It’s only been the last year where other promoters have been a threat, and HDNet has only been in the mix six months. Over an extended period of time, I think the UFC's PPV partners will push them to partner up in order to get the best fights. That is the UFC’s Achilles. If they can't maintain PPV buy levels and number of fights, they will have to make adjustments.

Cuban On HDNet's strategy concerning putting together exclusive events:

[We will do this]only when we can put together amazing cards. We won't promote just to promote. We can be far more effective partnering and placing fighters on cards and helping fighters to build a fan base across promoters.

Cuban On MMA PPV Events:

We have more free live events than every other network combined. We think that fans shouldn't have to pay 50 dollars plus every month to see great fights. Free is the future of MMA. Only the best three or four fights per year should be PPV.

Cuban On MMA's responsibility to curb street fighting and violence in general:

Do [you] want us to stop third graders from picking their noses as well? We are not role models.

Cuban On Marketing MMA:

The net doesn't need promotion [and] neither does MMA. It’s a sport that's viral in nature. It will grow because its fun to watch. What does need to happen is for casual viewers to become better educated about the sport. That turns them into hardcore viewers. That is something we are building into our programming on weekends and when we do promote MMA, it’s not about knockouts, it’s promoting the strategy and athleticism involved.

Cuban On Reports That Kurt Angle Will Face Randy Couture In A Grappling Match Later This Year:

They are trying to make it happen and it will be on HDNet.

Cuban On Fedor:

He is amazing. Kind of the Charles Barkley of MMA. Doesn't look like much, but he is a star. I have incredible respect for Fedor. He not only is a great fighter, but he stands by his principles and values. That alone is admirable

Combat Wrestling! Teacher Vs. Student

At the 14th All-Japan Combat Wrestling Championships two days ago Takanori Gomi competed in an exhibition tag team match against the man who developed Combat Wrestling, Noriaki Kiguchi (the man who is facing Gomi first in the video below). Kiguchi Gym is where Gomi’s career really started as he joined the gym after he dropped out of school and his parents disowned him.

Another thing to note is that Satoru Kitaoka won the tournament in the 80 kg class. He is one of the new signings of WVR and will probably get a shot at Gomi if he wins a couple of fights. He has defeated fighters such as Carlos Condit, Hidehiko Hasegawa, Paul Daley, Fabricio Monteiro and Kurt Pellegrino. Now he is going down to the Lightweight division for his SENGOKU debut.
