Returning vet Jeff Curran meets Scott Jorgensen at UFC 137

Jeff Curran now has an opponent for his first fight inside the octagon in seven years.

Sources close to the event today told MMAjunkie.com that Curran (33-13-1 MMA, 0-1 UFC) is set to meet onetime WEC title challenger and current UFC fighter Scott Jorgensen (12-4 MMA, 1-0 UFC) at UFC 137.

MMAFighting.com first reported the possibility of the matchup, which is scheduled for the bantamweight class.

As MMAjunkie.com first reported earlier today, Curran recently signed a multi-fight deal with the UFC for a possible fall debut.

UFC 137 takes place Oct. 29 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas. The pay-per-view main card features a welterweight title tilt between reigning champ Georges St-Pierre and soon-to-be-ex-Strikeforce champ Nick Diaz.

Curran vs. Jorgensen likely will be part of the preliminary card.

Curran, who unsuccessfully vied for WEC belt against then-champion Urijah Faber at WEC 31, hasn't fought in the UFC since a decision loss to Matt Serra way back at UFC 46 in early 2004. However, Curran won 15 of his next 16 fights from 2004 to 2007.

Following his latest WEC stint (which concluded with four consecutive losses to former champs and title challengers), Curran strung together four wins in five fights to get the UFC's attention.

Jorgensen, meanwhile, got off to a great start in his first fight inside the octagon by knocking out Ken Stone at The Ultimate Fighter 13 Finale. The win eased the pain from his previous performance, a loss to then-WEC bantamweight champ (and current UFC champ) Dominick Cruz at WEC 53.

During his stint with the WEC, Jorgensen went 7-2 with the promotion and earned two "Fight of the Night" bonuses for his aggressive style.

The latest UFC 137 card now includes:
Champ Georges St-Pierre vs. Nick Diaz (for UFC welterweight title)
Carlos Condit vs. B.J. Penn
Cheick Kongo vs. Matt Mitrione
Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic vs. Roy Nelson
Dennis Siver vs. Sam Stout
Hatsu Hioki vs. George Roop
Eliot Marshall vs. Brandon Vera
Tyson Griffin vs. Bart Palaszewski
Tim Credeur vs. Brad Tavares
Jeff Curran vs. Scott Jorgensen
Danny Downes vs. Ramsey Nijem

here's some insider info/rumors about Strikeforce from a guy on the UG that seems like he's in-the-know from the past few months.

Lets start off with the fedor situation... Fedor contract had an option for both sides to just roll it over for one fight.. M1 global and zuffa where renegoiating after the loss to henderson... M1 global came in with the attitude we dont want pay raise or paycut same deal with co promotion... Lorenzo respects fedor and also a business man offered 500k for 2 fights no co promotion m1 walked and thats that... Fedor does have a contract with showtime as it pertains to him fighting exclusivly for sho sports not really a fight contract...

M1 global has been trying to get a 2 to 5 year contract extension with showtime and trying to get an investment of 10 to 15% ownership of M1 global both sides are in talks and of course the selling point is fedor to m1 global and shosports...

Im told zuffa will sign dan henderson next week and he is going to get anderson silva type money and some sory of announcement will be made very shorty this deal wont be hard to make from what ive been told...

The golden glory situation is a mess what dana has said is true but there are so many things that have not been mentioned with reem being impossible to deal with... GG holding out for money blackmail etc etc there blacklisted for the things they tried to pull not going to repeat myself there...

Everybody thinks strikeforce is dead and atm its not... Lorenzo has been restructing the companys payroll and assets to reduce the losses... There is meeting schedules over the next few weeks with showtime about renewing there deal with strikeforce.... Ideas being thrown around are making it a feeder show or a midlevel show Keeping it one territory like calafornia and chicago and slowly spreading it out...

Ufc fighters are going to transfer over to help with star power and a name ive been hearing is rich franklin... The company will proceed as planned no final decisions have been made dana wants to fold while lorenzo is trying to find a way for strikeforce to work and be a viable option... The problem folding strikeforce into ufc is taking over all the fighter ufc has enough fighters as is and i was told alot of cuts are coming but if fighters fold into ufc your going to see alot of fighters getting cut off of one loss as there is not enough spots to go around....

Lorenzo does not like the idea of giving competition alot of these fighters basically boosting another companys value.... Keeping strikeforce open has benefits of not losing fighters to other orgs and more shows to fill spots... Moving all to ufc is not what zuffa wants to do as there roster is already imploding... Strikeforce is not dead but you might see a new direction of where there going with the company and a new business plan... The talk of it dying is premature im told and a decision will be made my october 1st... Will keep updated with info as I hear it....

zuffa already has over 200 fighters under contract and adding a 100 plus more and not enough shows creates a dillemma... All signs point to a feeder to midlevel show and having the womans divsion there niche while sprinkling a dash of ufc on top... Talks are ongoing and meeting scheduled with showtime discussing the future of the company and extending there deal more to come...

UFC 136 main card set with two title fights, likely No. 1 contender's bout

The five-fight pay-per-view main card is set for UFC 136, and the October card features two title fights and what's expected to be a No. 1 contender's bout.

UFC 136 takes place Oct. 8 at Houston's Toyota Center.

Headlining "UFC 136: Edgar vs. Maynard 3" is a third meeting and lightweight title fight between champion Frankie Edgar (13-1-1 MMA, 8-1-1 UFC) and challenger Gray Maynard (10-0-1 MMA, 8-0-1 UFC).

"Frankie and Gray had a 'Fight of the Year' candidate the last time they met, and I expect nothing different this time around in Houston," UFC President Dana White stated about the draw. "Both guys truly believe they won the last fight, and the wait for their third fight is over. On Oct. 8, neither of these guys plans on leaving it to the judges."

Also slated for the PPV main card is a featherweight title fight between champ Jose Aldo (19-1 MMA, 1-0 UFC) and challenger Kenny Florian (15-5 MMA, 12-4 UFC).

Additionally, Chael Sonnen (25-11-1 MMA, 4-4 UFC) and Brian Stann (11-3 MMA, 5-2 UFC) meet in a middleweight fight that White recently said will likely determine a new No. 1 contender.

Rounding out the main-card lineup are heavyweights Dave "Pee Wee" Herman (21-2 MMA, 1-0 UFC) vs. Mike Russow (14-1 MMA, 3-0 UFC) and lightweights Melvin Guillard (29-8-2 MMA, 10-4 UFC) vs. Joe Lauzon (20-6 MMA, 7-3 UFC).

As MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) first reported, UFC 136 will get a two-bout "UFC Prelims" special on Spike TV, and the remaining prelims are expected to stream on Facebook.

pretty sad but this dude must hit hard as fuck.

Bellator prospect Rasul Mirzaev reportedly arrested for death of Russian student

Rasul Mirzaev's next fight will apparently take place in court rather than a Bellator cage.

Multiple Russian news outlets are reporting that Mirzaev (5-0 MMA, 0-0 BFC) was recently arrested in his native country and charged in the death of a 19-year-old student.

Mirzaev and Ivan Agafonov reportedly engaged in a verbal altercation outside of a Moscow night club before a single punch from the undefeated Russian prospect knocked the student down and eventually unconscious. He died from the blow four days later.

The entire incident was filmed on a nearby security camera.

NTV.ru reports that Russian authorities are investigating the incident as "intentional infliction of serious bodily injury that resulted in the death of the victim." If convicted of the crime, Mirzaev could face up to 15 years in prison.

The incident apparently began when Agafonov began talking to Mirzaev's girlfriend outside of the nightclub.

Mirzaev made his professional debut in 2009 and earned five-straight victories to open his career. This past May, Mirzaev earned a first-round submission over Roman Kishev on the preliminary card of United Glory's World Series Final event in Russia. Then in July, Mirzaev earned the most significant win of his career with a first-round TKO of Masanori Kanehara.

The Bellator fight would have marked Mirzaev's first fight outside of his native Russia.

MMAjunkie.com first reported Mirzaev's Bellator signing earlier this week. However, MMAjunkie.com has since confirmed with sources close to the fighter that while a contract was offered, the paperwork has not yet been completed, and Mirzaev is not officially on the promotion's roster.

Bellator officials weren't immediately available for comment.

Gilbert Melendez vs. Jorge Masvidal targeted for December

An expected lightweight title bout between Strikeforce champ Gilbert Melendez (19-2 MMA, 9-1 SF) and Jorge Masvidal (22-6 MMA, 4-0 SF) has been targeted for Dec. 17.

Sources close to the event today told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) of the date, though a city and venue has yet to be confirmed.

Melendez makes the third defense of his Strikeforce title while Masvidal get his shot after impressive back-to-back victories.

In his most recent appearance, Melendez earned a second victory over Japanese standout Tatsuya Kawajiri and with a first-round TKO stoppage at "Strikeforce: Diaz vs. Daley."

The Cesar Gracie product has since pined for the opportunity to fight the UFC champion, and UFC president Dana White has said he'd love to have Melendez fight inside the octagon. But that opportunity isn't possible as of yet because the champ is still under contract with Strikeforce. And both White and Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker have dismissed a possible crossover fight even as Melendez teammate Nick Diaz was able to relinquish his Strikeforce welterweight title for a shot at UFC welterweight champ Georges St-Pierre.

"Right now, there are no other fighters that are going to go over there," Coker said. "We expect him to continue fighting in Strikeforce and getting ready for a fight in the fall.

"Personally, I think all these guys should fight each other. But where and when, if that happens, it will be down the line. We're going to keep everything separate for right now."

With that decree in the open, Melendez has resigned himself to a bout with Masvidal in several interviews.

For Masvidal, it's the opportunity of a lifetime, and a win could put a halt to any crossover plans. So far, the American Top Team product has done well to confound expectations. In his most recent appearance, he outpointed the durable K.J. Noons, and prior to that, outpointed homegrown Strikeforce star Jorge Evangelista.

Check back with MMAjunkie.com for an update on the Dec. 17 event's city and venue.
