Fedor Emelianenko Turns Down Fight With Pedro Rizzo
By Jason Perkins | January 24, 2008

Sources close to M-1 Global have confirmed that they received an offer from Art Of War to set up a fight between Fedor Emelianenko and Pedro Rizzo. M-1 was uninterested in the offer however and it was promptly rejected. No further details were given as to the reason.
Rizzo (16-7) is the current Art Of War heavyweight champion besting Jeff Monson via TKO this past September to win the title. He also holds notable wins over Mark Coleman, Dan Severn and Andrei Arlovski.

Fedor Emelianenko is considered by most MMA pundits to be the greatest heavyweight fighter on the planet. He has defeated a who's who of fighters while remaining virtually unbeaten. His list of notable victories runs deep and includes; Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira (twice), Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic, Mark Coleman, Kevin Randleman, Ricardo Arona, Matt Lindland and Mark Hunt.

Josh Barnett To Face Alexander Emelianenko At M-1 Global Event?

Aleksander Emelianenko has announced that he will be fighting in Chicago on April 11th. There is no official word yet on who his opponent will be, but according to Emelianenko, he will likely face top heavyweight contender Josh Barnett.
Sources close to M-1 have confirmed that they are currently in discussions with Barnett and that this fight is a possibility. Sources have also stated that a fight for Fedor Emelianenko on the same card is not yet a certainty. We'll have more as soon as anything becomes official.

Emelianenko, brother of Fedor Emelianenko, last fought at Hardcore Championship Fighting: Tital Wave on October 19, 2007, defeating Dan Bobish via submission with a Guillotine Choke in the first round.

Barnett's last fight was a unanimous decision loss to Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira at PRIDE Shockwave 2006 on December 31, 2006.

He is probably going to fight Semmy Schilt any ways.

UFC STILL WORKING ON NEW TELEVISION DEAL

It was strongly rumored that the Ultimate Fighting Championship would be making its broadcast network debut on CBS when, in November, Mediapost Publications reported that the two entities were in the final stages of a broadcast deal.

Mediapost Publications is a trade publication for advertising media professionals.

That deal has yet to come to fruition. But it apparently hasn’t been dismissed.

In a media conference call on Thursday, UFC senior vice president of operations and production, Craig Borsari, when asked about CBS replied, “We're talking to a lot of different networks right now.”

Although he didn’t confirm a specific network or give any insight into how close the promotion is to finalizing a deal, Borsari did offer a hopeful timeframe for something to happen.

“We have several events that we're doing in the U.K. and we're looking for broadcast partners for all of them,” he said.

The UFC reportedly has plans to return to the O2 Arena in London on June 14 and Borsari indicated that event is one that the promotion has its sites set on.

“Yeah. That's one we're looking at, probably in June.”

He also confirmed that, hot on the heels of a recently inked deal with Harley-Davidson, the UFC is expecting to announce more big sponsorship deals in the near future.

“We're not ready to announce them yet, but definitely some big announcements in the sponsorship area coming very soon,” said Borsari.

The partnership with Harley-Davidson was a particularly impressive accomplishment as the company’s senior vice president and chief marketing officer, Mark-Hans Richer stated, “This is the first major worldwide sports sponsorship for Harley-Davidson outside the motorcycle/automotive category.”

No information was forthcoming as to when either a new television deal or sponsorship partner would be announced.

Semmy wanted the fight so M-1 is going to make the fight happen I don't mind seeing happen again. Besides Barrnett is fighting Alexander again. You can't denie that Semmy is still a threat to Fedor.

South Korea's Top Fighter to Make UFC Debut

Highly regarded South Korean prospect Dong Hyun Kim (Pictures) will be making his UFC debut in the welterweight division sometime in either March or April, according to a report Friday by Mfight.

Kim originally started off his career in Spirit MC, but really established himself by sending reigning DEEP welterweight champion, Hidehiko Hasegawa (Pictures), into a state of unconsciousness in a non-title affair. He fought to a highly controversial draw in their ensuing rematch, which many thought Kim should have won.

Kim, who stands close to 6-foot-2, has trained with the likes of Yushin Okami (Pictures) and walks around at the same weight as the UFC stalwart. He is a well rounded fighter with penetrating strikes from the southpaw stance and a solid -- if underutilized --ground ground game.

Kim's debut should add some international piquancy in a stacked division. Kim also has the potential to help the UFC enter the Korean market, where it does not have much of a footing as compared to K-1.

Alvarez and Daley Anchor ShoXC Card

All you lucky Showtime subscribers out there will get to enjoy another night of fistic madness delivered to you by the good folks behind EliteXC.

Come Friday night at the Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City, N.J., we'll get to see one of Britain's finest discover the precise breaking point of a TUF graduate. And, with any luck, maybe Bill Goldberg won't make an appearance.

Then again, Brock Lesnar (Pictures) will be headlining a UFC pay-per-view next week, so maybe we need to reassess where Goldberg sits on the totem pole of annoyances. Either way, read up and get set to fire off those e-mails when I go 0-5 on my predictions. The Showtime broadcast begins at 11 p.m. ET/PT.

Ross Ebanez (Pictures) vs. Eddie Alvarez (Pictures)

Thanks to Gary Shaw treating the current MMA weight classes like red-headed stepchildren, we get to see two of the newly minted "super lightweight/light welterweight" competitors match wits and fists at a catch-weight of 165 pounds.

Fighting at 160 pounds, which he will do in future EliteXC fights, is a welcome change for Eddie Alvarez (Pictures), who showed tremendous ability as a welterweight, but was doomed to run into an opponent capable of exploiting his undersized frame.

The inevitable came in Bodog against Nick Thompson (Pictures), who did his best Nelson Muntz and bullied his way to a second-round stoppage last April. Now free of any contractual obligation to Bodog, Alvarez (11-1) holds dual citizenship with EliteXC and M-1 and appears set to make an impact in both.

The first step starts with a roadblock in the form of Hawaiian brawler Ross "Da Boss" Ebanez. Tempting Tony Danza references aside, Ebanez has made a name for himself as one of B.J. Penn (Pictures)'s premier students, but he has yet to approach the success of his instructor.

Known more for his exciting slugfests than awe-inspiring skill, Ebanez (16-5, 3 NC) has been a regular in the Rumble on the Rock promotion for years, which has become more curse than blessing. Saddled with the perception of being a local gatekeeper, he has come up short in the past to the likes of Carlos Condit (Pictures) and Mike Pyle (Pictures) in potential career-changing matches.

Make no mistake, the higher-ups of EliteXC are hoping for Alvarez, from the fighting city of Philadelphia, Penn., to settle into the role of poster boy with a win over Ebanez. The style clash is certainly in Alvarez's favor. Fighting at a lower weight will allow him to make better use of his wrestling background and powerful ground striking.

While Ebanez presents a threat to virtually anyone with his power punches, he still lacks legitimate takedown defense, and his weakness has always been working off his back. Even if Alvarez obliges Ebanez's desire for a standup affair, "Da Boss" is hardly the kind of striker who will overwhelm Alvarez with ease.

Expect to see some brief fireworks on the feet before this one hits the ground and Alvarez pounds out a TKO late in the first round.

Now that I've turned all of Hilo, Hawaii, against me, you can expect me to be joining the Writer's Protection Program real soon.

Paul Daley (Pictures) vs. Sam Morgan (Pictures)

After being forced to endure more changes than Jeff Goldblum in "The Fly," British demolition man Paul "Semtex" Daley finally has a huckleberry in TUF alumnus Sam "The Squeeze" Morgan.

Having just served as the sacrificial lamb to Strikeforce's middleweight meal ticket Cung Le (Pictures), Morgan (19-9) is hoping to reverse course starting with one of EliteXC's premier welterweights.

Already regarded as one of Britain's finest mixed martial artists, Daley (16-6-2) owes his success to incredible striking skills and natural athletic prowess. However, as is so often the case with strikers, Daley's failures can be traced to his lacking ground game.

Seemingly doomed by the striker's Sisyphus syndrome, he must make headway in the division now before he becomes another anonymous kickboxer who can sell tickets across the pond. Scoring an upset knockout win over Duane "Bang" Ludwig in his last bout was a good start to Daley's quest for stateside supremacy, but the road gets no easier from here on out.

Illusions of welterweight supremacy were abruptly put to an end early in Sam Morgan (Pictures)'s UFC career thanks to a 21-second KO loss to Josh Burkman (Pictures). Since then, Morgan, of St. Paul, Minn., has become a reliable performer on the local circuit who seems incapable of raising his game when the stakes are at their highest.

Tagged as the welterweight division's Jan Van de Velde, he has been given an opportunity to not only shed that image but also resurrect his own flagging career at the expense of Daley. Lofty ambitions for a fighter known for lacking a strategy, and against Daley you'll want the entire Spy-Gate crew handling your pre-fight preparation. Considering Morgan admits to freelancing come the opening bell, don't count on Sun Tzu being in the Minnesotan's corner.

Luck won't be in Morgan's corner either. Daley takes the initiative early and overwhelms him with accurate strikes before forcing a TKO midway through the first round.

Bobby McMasters (Pictures) vs. Bao Quach (Pictures)

Another hybrid weight class clash awaits all you Showtime subscribers out there as up-and-comer Bobby McMasters (Pictures) takes on resurgent veteran Bao Quach (Pictures) in the 150-pound division. With names as cool as McMasters and Bao, this one is sure to deliver.

After a career spent hovering around the MMA equivalent of the Mendoza line, Quach (11-8-1) finds himself in the midst of a renaissance. He has won his last five bouts, including a stunning upset over Shooto rookie champion Tenkei Fujimiya (Pictures).

One of the most promising rookies in his class, Fujimiya was caught off guard by Quach's improved striking and dropped a split decision that simultaneously knocked his career off course while turning Quach into a top-flight featherweight.

Next up for Quach, fighting out of Huntington Beach, Calif., is another MMA whippersnapper, Bobby McMasters (Pictures) (7-1), who racked up an undefeated record competing in local shows before making his EliteXC debut against Muhsin Corbbrey (Pictures).

As far as debuts go, McMasters' was like Tony Romo's first foray into the playoffs: Everything started well enough but ended in disaster at the last possible second. Trapped in a deep guillotine choke, McMasters was forced to submit with all of one second remaining in the first round.

Tangling with Quach won't make his life any easier. Boston's McMasters must keep his far more experienced opponent from controlling the tempo, and above all he must push the fight and overwhelm the physically smaller Quach.

That plan won't come to fruition, though. Quach will seize the initiative standing while frustrating McMasters on the ground on his way to a unanimous decision win.

A few more fights like this and the Sherdog.com rankings will have to start playing by Gary Shaw's rules.

Julie Kedzie (Pictures) vs. Tonya Evinger (Pictures)

Continuing its commitment to feMMA (read: giving Gina Carano (Pictures) the biggest push since Hulk Hogan), EliteXC is rolling out a 140-pound matchup between two fighters that have fallen to Carano and are looking to regain their footing.

While Carano is likely to remain the division's figurehead for some time -- assuming she can make weight -- both Kedzie and Evinger have an opportunity to carve out a niche for themselves and escape the local shows that so many female mixed martial artists, regardless of skill, are forced to compete in.

Having spent the last four years plying her wares on those local shows, Kedzie (8-6) has no interest in returning and is desperate to prove she can win when it counts the most.

There certainly is no shame in losing to the likes of Tara LaRosa and Amanda Buckner (Pictures), but Kedzie, of Albuquerque, N.M., is rapidly becoming feMMA's Dan Marino. Not quite the distinction that Kedzie was looking for upon embarking on an MMA career.

Distinction has been nonexistent for Evinger (5-3) thus far, having lost the two biggest fights of her career and back to back no less. First was a quick submission loss to Vanessa Porto (Pictures), immediately followed by an only slightly longer submission loss to Gina Carano (Pictures).

Whether Evinger, of Reno, Nev., is doomed to engage in the MMA equivalent of a Marx brothers sketch will depend largely on her performance against the more experienced and savvy Kedzie.

Despite having lost twice by submission, Evinger would be best served avoiding Kedzie's striking, which is surprisingly strong. The problem with taking Kedzie down is that she is a solid wrestler and is likely to gain top control on Evinger, who rarely does well off her back.

Short on options, expect Evinger to go for broke early before Kedzie takes control of the bout and works her way to a methodical unanimous decision win. If that doesn't sound exciting to you, try imagining that both contestants have beards. It helps, trust me.

Kala Kolohe Hose (Pictures) vs. Frederic Belleton

If the quality of a fighter's name determined the quality of his matches, the matchup of Kala Kolohe Hose (Pictures) and Frederic Belleton would have been declared the fight of the year weeks ago. As it stands, we're still all but guaranteed a quality middleweight tear-up.

After being denied a shot at Robbie Lawler (Pictures) twice due to injuries sustained by the Iowa brawler, Hose (4-1) is simply looking for a warm body on which to unleash his Hawaiian fury. Save a debut loss to Reese Andy (Pictures) as a light heavyweight, he has been making good use of his power, having racked up four straight stoppage wins in the middleweight division.

The path has been nearly identical for Belleton (5-1). He lost his second professional bout before embarking on a four-fight win streak of his own, with every fight ending before the time limit.

With that said, Belleton, of Stoughton, Mass., is not quite the headfirst brawler that Hose is and can work a more varied game plan than most would expect. Keeping that in mind, Belleton's best hope would certainly be forcing Hose to work off his back, where the Waianae-based fighter's striking would be about as useful as Britney Spears enrolling in a self-help program.

Grounding the fight will be a tall task, though, considering how physically dominant Hose is and Belleton's lack of strong wrestling credentials. Expect to see Belleton go for the takedown early before being forced into one exchange too many. Hawaii's newest favorite son takes this one via KO midway through the first round.

Afterward expect Robbie Lawler (Pictures) to announce that he has temporarily lost his extremities and will have to postpone his bout with Hose until further notice.

Ricco Rodriguez On Kimbo Slice: "He’s a dancing monkey."

Ricco Rodriguez had some choice words for Kimbo Slice in an interview he did recently on Tagg Radio.
“Kimbo Slice is a tomato can to me, and he’ll always be a tomato can to me," said Rodriguez. The reality is, what has he done to prove himself? He hasn’t fought anybody. So, to me, he’s nobody.. There’s so many other athletes out there that have better skill… There are other top contenders right now. Kimbo Slice to me is just a clown… He’s a dancing monkey. You put him against a guy like Ken Shamrock; Ken’s going to run right through the guy. He beat up Ray Mercer? Ray Mercer never wrestled a day in his life.”

Rodriguez is set to fight Antonio Silva on Feb 16 as part of an under card featuring the aforementioned Slice taking on MMA legend Tank Abbott.

BTT ADD ANOTHER FIGHTER TO UFC ROSTER

Brazilian Top Team middleweight Rousimar “Toquinho” Palhares has signed to fight for the Ultimate Fighting Championship according to a report by GracieMag.com.

The news comes at the same time that MMAWeekly.com confirmed with David Bielkheden, another BTT fighter, that he has singed with the UFC to face Diego Sanchez on March 1 at UFC 82.

Palhares is a top middleweight fighter out of Brazil. He holds a 7-1 professional record and has been a staple of the Brazilian fight scene.

“He signed (on Thursday) a contract for four fights in the under 84kg (185 pounds) category. His debut date has not yet been set, but next week we should have some news in that regard,” said Murilo Bustamante, one of BTT’s leaders, to GracieMag.com.

FINAL BOUTS ANNOUNCED FOR UFC 81

The Ultimate Fighting Championship on Friday officially announced the undercard bouts for its Feb. 2 UFC 81 fight card in Las Vegas.

The main event features former UFC champion Tim Sylvia facing former Pride champion Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira for the interim heavyweight title. Former NCAA national champion Brock Lesnar makes his Octagon debut in a bout with another former UFC champion in Frank Mir in the co-main event.

The televised portion of the card is also set to feature Nate Marquardt in his return bout, coming off of a loss to current middleweight champ Anderson Silva, as he squares off with UFC and Pride veteran Jeremy Horn.

Marquardt reeled off four straight victories in the UFC before succumbing to Silva. He is a seven-time King of Pancrase. His opponent has more than 100 career bouts to his record including 10 in the UFC alone. Horn has a wealth of experience that should present a tough test for Marquardt as he tries to get back on the winning track and Horn tries to re-establish himself on the world stage.

A fight between Marquardt and Horn was actually scheduled to take place in Sturgis, S.D. in 2004 at an International Fighting Championship event that fell apart amidst a scandal between its business partners.

Also scheduled for the televised portion of the card is the return of Renzo Gracie protégé Ricardo Almeida as he faces fellow UFC veteran Alan Belcher. Almeida was one a six-fight winning streak when he walked away from the sport in 2004. He will make his return at the Mandalay Bay Event Center, but steps in against Belcher, who has gone 3-2 in the UFC, but brings a two-fight streak to the Octagon against Almeida.

The full fight card as announced by the UFC:

Main Card Bouts:
-Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira vs. Tim Sylvia
-Brock Lesnar vs. Frank Mir
-Nathan Marquardt vs. Jeremy Horn
-Alan Belcher vs. Ricardo Almeida

Preliminary Bouts:
-Tyson Griffin vs. Gleison Tibau
-Chris Lytle vs. Kyle Bradley
-Terry Martin vs. Marvin Eastman
-David Heath vs. Tim Boetsch
-Keita Nakamura vs. Rob Emerson

CAMP REPORT: AMERICAN TOP TEAM

American Top Team is regarded as one of the best training camps in all of mixed martial arts and the list of top fighters going there to train just keeps growing and growing. In the latest ATT camp report, we learn of new team members and a ton of great fights coming up for the Florida based team.

UFC & ATT

The Ultimate Fighting Championship and American Top Team seemingly go hand in hand with all of the fighters from the camp making their way to the Octagon lately.

At UFC 81, ATT lightweight Gleison Tibau makes his 4th appearance for the promotion as he faces Tyson Griffin in what should be a fast paced bout that could steal the show for Fight of the Night.

UFC 82 will feature the return of Luigi Fioravanti as he faces former “Ultimate Fighter” competitor Luke Cummo.

Also it appears that new American Top Team member, Alessio Sakara, fresh off the heels of his win over James Lee at UFC 80, will make his 185lb debut at the Columbus, OH show, but as of now nothing is confirmed and no opponent has been named.

UFC Fight Night on April 2 in Denver, CO will host three American Top Team members as Din Thomas returns following a knee injury suffered in his last bout with Kenny Florian, Marcus Aurelio makes his third trip to the Octagon, and Thiago Alves squares off against Karo Parisyan in a welterweight bout.

While no bout agreements have been put in place, it appears Thomas will square off against Josh Neer while Marcus Aurelio will face off against Miletich lightweight Spencer Fisher.

Yet another American Top Team talent appears headed to the UFC as well as Steve Bruno is expected to make his Octagon debut sometime in April or May.

Radach & Polley Head For The IFL and ATT Looks To Field A Team

Benji “Razor” Radach will return to action on Feb 29 as a representative of Randy Couture’s Xtreme Couture squad as they face Mario Sperry’s team in IFL competition. Radach is coming off of a loss to Matt Horwich, but the long time American Top Team contributor looks to bounce back in February.

Also slated to help out Xtreme Couture’s team at the IFL is rising star Lew Polley who will represent the camp at 205lbs against an as of yet unnamed opponent. Polley is currently undefeated as a professional and recently won a huge fight over Roger Hollett in Canada.

Polley also looks to defend the ECC light heavyweight championship he won by defeating Hollett in the near future, most likely in March.

Representatives from the IFL are also looking into an American Top Team representation for the league which has changed its format to a camp versus camp style this year, as opposed to the city based teams for previous seasons.

March K-1 Event To Feature 3 Top ATT Fighters

Coming off an injury that forced him off of the New Year’s Eve card in Japan, top lightweight prospect Gezias “JZ” Calvancante will return in March to face another perennial top ten lightweight in Shinya Aoki as K-1 puts together another stellar MMA card set to take place in March, although no date has been set yet.

Calvancante had a tremendous year in 2007 and he looks to continue that momentum as he faces Aoki who will be a formidable test for the ATT standout.

Also, new American Top Team member and grappling legend Marcelo Garcia will return to action for his second fight in K-1, while top ten middleweight competitor, Denis Kang, will also make his way back to active competition with the K-1 show in March. Neither fighter has an opponent as of now, but both are expected to be featured on the card.

News & Notes From Around ATT

Antonio Silva, currently the top heavyweight in Elite XC, returns Feb 16 in Miami,
Fla as he faces former UFC heavyweight champion, Ricco Rodriguez. Yves Edwards will also return to action on the same card as he faces Edson Berto in a lightweight match-up.

Micah Miller returns to action in the WEC on Feb 13 to face Chance Farrar. The featherweights were scheduled to meet at the last WEC show, but an injury forced Farrar off the card and no replacement was found so the bout was scratched from the event entirely.

Jorge Masvidal, regarded as one of the top lightweight prospects in the world, will look for his 7th win in a row as he faces Ryan Healy on the StrikeForce card in Tacoma, Wash featuring the return of Bob “The Beast” Sapp to MMA.

Jorge Santiago, who won the first ever StrikeForce middleweight tournament in November, is looking to get back to action soon, most likely on the March 29 StrikeForce card featuring a main event between Frank Shamrock and Cung Le.

Thiago Silva will make the trip to Florida to work out with the fighters at American Top Team in the next few weeks. There is no indication that this is a permanent move, simply just a chance for the rising 205lb fighter to train with the camp and work with many top competitors in and around his weight class.
