UFC ANNOUNCES U.K. TV DEAL IN TIME FOR UFC 80

NEWCASTLE-UPON TYNE, England – Marshall Zelaznik, president of the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s U.K. operations chaired the pre-fight press conference held at Newcastle Metro Radio Arena on Thursday.

Attending the press conference were fighters B.J. Penn, Joe Stevenson, Marcus Davis, Jess Liaudin and Gabriel Gonzaga. Zelaznik apologized for UFC president Dana White’s absence, who only having recently arrived in the U.K., was suffering from jet lag. Gonzaga’s opponent, Fabricio Werdum, was also absent as he was busy undertaking his pre-fight medical assessment.

Zelaznik announced that the UFC “has come to terms with Setanta Sports to exhibit over the next few years all of our U.K. events” and that UFC 80 will also be aired in over 12 other countries.

Setanta is an international sports broadcaster with operations in Great Britain, Ireland, Luxembourg, the United States, Canada and Australia. It owns and operates premium sports television channels that are made available on a subscription basis. Setanta has over three million subscribers.

Setanta stated in its own announcement on Thursday that it had struck a multi-year deal with the UFC “to make its Setanta Sports 1 channel the exclusive home for all of the UFC’s big U.K. and U.S. fights, plus all other UFC programming in Britain and Ireland.”

The deal includes Saturday’s UFC 80 and insures that “Setanta subscribers in 2008 will be able to see at least four U.K. live events and after July, all other U.S. live events.” According to Setanta, other U.K. events are planned for March, June and September of 2008. Also included in the offerings is the newest UFC television series “Wired.”

The UFC programming on Setanta, including the live events, is available to Setanta Sports subscribers only, it is not provided on a pay-per-view basis. Setanta currently states its subscription price at £9.99 per month.

Zelaznik also announced with regards to the scheduled Canadian UFC event on April 19 in Montreal that White, interim welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre and reigning welterweight champion Matt Serra would be at the Bell Centre in Montreal on Feb. 4 to announce the full fight card.

Ticket sales analysis from previous U.K. based UFC events indicate that 26% of ticket sales came from the Newcastle-Upon-Tyne region. Zelaznik stated that this compelled the UFC to hold UFC 80 in Newcastle, “If the Geordies (Newcastle natives) were willing to travel to us, then we are willing to travel to the Geordies.”

Having sold-out the Metro Radio Arena over 10 days ago, more tickets were released and they are currently sitting on only a few hundred, which are expected to go prior to Saturday’s event.

Zelaznik continued the press conference by introducing the fighters; first up was Liaudin, who was quick to lay to rest much publicised animosity between himself and Davis stating that he had nothing but respect for his opponent. Liaudin was keen to stress that he wants to be perceived as a respectful fighter and ambassador in the fight for legalizing MMA in his home country of France and therefore “smack talk” was not in his character.

Davis for his part appeared to accept this, acknowledging the skills of his opponent. During his press address Davis appeared confident that he would have the majority fan support against the British based, French born fighter.

Both Penn and Stevenson remained respectful and said very little with regards to their forthcoming headline bout; however, both were vocal in reference to Sean Sherk’s suspension and subsequent stripping of the UFC lightweight crown. Penn was quick to continue his criticism of Sherk, branding him a “cheat” and Stevenson aired his frustration with Sherk retaining the belt for ten months whilst injured only to have it taken away from him for illegal steroid use after only one defense.

Gonzaga took to the podium for the briefest of moments to state that he was glad to be back in the U.K. and that he hoped to give the fans and exciting fight. In his last bout in Britain, Gonzaga knocked out former Pride champion Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic with a stunning kick to the head.

UFC 80 takes place at the Metro Radio Arena on Saturday night.

UFC Hall-of-Famer Draws ‘Buzz’ Berry at Cage Rage 25 on March 8

UFC Hall-of-Famer Ken Shamrock will make his promotional debut against Robert Berry at Cage Rage 25 “Bring It On” on Saturday, March 8 at Wembley Arena in London. Shamrock’s manager, Rod Donahoo, confirmed the bout on Thursday.

Shamrock (26-12-2), who turns 44 in February, has lost seven of his past nine fights, including four straight. He last competed in October 2006, when he succumbed to strikes against arch rival Tito Ortiz. It was Shamrock’s third loss to the former UFC light heavyweight champion, all three by TKO. The UFC released “The World’s Most Dangerous Man” from his contract last June.

Still one of the sport’s most recognizable figures, Shamrock remains the only man to defeat fellow legend Bas Rutten twice. He also holds victories over former UFC heavyweight champion Maurice Smith and Dan Severn. Shamrock is one of four men – along with Royce Gracie, Randy Couture and Severn – enshrined in the UFC Hall of Fame.

Berry (11-7, 6-3 CR), a veteran of the Cage Rage circuit, will enter the bout on a two-fight losing streak. The British kickboxer last fought in December, when he was stopped by unbeaten Neil Grove at Cage Rage 24. Berry drew international attention in December, when he challenged Internet street fighting legend Kevin “Kimbo Slice” Ferguson. The two could meet in the future, as Cage Rage and EliteXC – the promotion for which Ferguson fights – are both owned by Pro Elite Inc. All 11 of Berry’s victories have come by KO, TKO or submission.

Shamrock’s son, Ryan, will also compete on the Cage Rage 25 card, though no opponent has been announced. Ryan Shamrock made his professional debut in August, when he submitted Josh Besneatte with a first-round choke.

All Fighters Make Weight in Stormy Newcastle

NEWCASTLE, England, Jan. 18 -- It seems probable B.J. Penn (Pictures) won't be mistaking Newcastle for Hawaii anytime soon.

Friday's weigh-ins for UFC 80, headlined by a lightweight title fight between Penn and Joe Stevenson at the Metro Radio Arena, saw a couple thousand fans brave the rain-drenched northeast of England.

Their efforts to attend returned a relatively uneventful affair as far as weigh-in histrionics are concerned. All fighters made their required poundage without undue fuss.

Penn promised to be both "strong and flexible" in his vacant lightweight title throwdown with Stevenson, a former "Ultimate Fighter" winner who didn't rule out a flash knockout or a quick submission in his own pre-fight statements.

Each challenger for the ownerless UFC lightweight title looked chiseled, and both hit the scales at 154.

Heavyweights Gabriel Gonzaga (Pictures) and Fabricio Werdum (Pictures) weighed in at 255 and 247 respectively, with Werdum looking a little soft in the middle. Both promised quick victories in a rematch of their 2003 encounter won by Werdum.

Full weights:

Report: Villasenor to fight Riggs on March 29

A middleweight bout between Strikeforce fighter Joe Riggs and EliteXC fighter Joey Villasenor to take place on March 29 during a show to be co-promoted by both promotions in San Jose could be finalized in the next several days, according to website MMAjunkie.com.

Junkie reports that it was alerted to the possible matchup by Villasenor's camp. Neither Strikeforce or EliteXC have confirmed the bout.

The card is set to be headlined by Frank Shamrock defending his Strikeforce middleweight title against Cung Le.

Villasenor, 24-6, has not fought since defeating Riki Fukuda at EliteXC's "Uprising" event that took place this past September. Prior to that bout, he lost Murilo "Ninja" Rua in a fight to determined the first-ever EliteXC middleweight champion during Strikeforce and EliteXC's last combined show in June. He is currently slated to compete for the King of the Cage promotion prior to the 3/29 date.

Riggs had been scheduled for last week's ill-fated WCO show in San Diego, Calif. However, reports indicated that Riggs was involved in a car accident several days prior to the show and injured his ribs. Junkie reports that the injury is not expected to prevent him from fighting in March.

Riggs, who has a 4-4 lifetime record in the UFC, has won two consecutive fights since last fighting for the Zuffa organization. He recorded a first round submission via triangle choke vs. Dan Chambers on a Hardcore Championship Fighting card in July and knocked out Eugene Jackson in the first round during Strikeforce's show at the Playboy Mansion last September.

Shamrock and Le is the only official bout announced for the card, although Gina Carano, Gilbert Melendez, and Rua are all rumored for the card.

Melendez had been expected to defend his Strikeforce lightweight title vs. Josh Thomson but that match was scrapped after it was reported earlier this week by Sherdog.com's Josh Gross that Thomson was scheduled to undergo shoulder surgery.

Rua said several weeks ago in an interview with GracieMag.com that his next match for EliteXC would be in March. As of now, no other cards for EliteXC are scheduled to take place that month.

As for Carano, she became linked to the card as a possible participant after EliteXC live events president Gary Shaw confirmed that she would not compete on the promotion's next major card on Feb. 16 despite a previous announcement. Shaw indicated that her "training" schedule for the NBC television show "American Gladiators" would prevent her from competing in February but that the promotion was hopeful she'd be ready in time for the card on 3/29.

Report: Arlovski's next fight to take place at UFC 82

Andrei Arlovski is scheduled to fight the final bout on his current UFC contract on March 1 in Columbus, Ohio during UFC 82, reports Roman Modrowski of the Chicago Sun-Times.

The UFC has not officially announced Arlovski's involved with the card, but the report seems legitimate. Arlovski is due to become a free agent in April and the UFC needs to offer him a bout before the expiration of that contract, or otherwise risk having the contract expire without the ability to schedule him for the one remaining fight.

Unless he signs a new contract, Arlovski will become a free agent in April. It is unknown whether the UFC retains an exclusive negotiation period or if they have a right of first refusal. Even if Arlovski is a restricted free agent, the former UFC heavyweight champion is expected to draw considerable interest on the open market.

The article did not name a specific opponent for Arlovski but several names have been rumored in recent weeks, including Jake O'Brien. O'Brien's involvement has only been rumored and an attempt to reach his representative was not successful. It's unknown whether O'Brien will be healthy in time for March and other names have been rumored as well.

It is also believed that the UFC has tried to schedule Arlovski for matches on two previous occasions but that bout agreements with his potential opponents could not be formalized. It remains to be seen whether Arlovski will be offered a fight against a big name opponent because the UFC may not want to run the risk of having him beat a core member of its heavyweight division and then walk away from the promotion.

While Arlovski's involvement in UFC 82 is not yet official, the promotion announced late last year that a unification match between UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva vs. PRIDE welterweight champion Dan Henderson will headline the card. Additional bouts between Jon Fitch vs. Akihiro Gono, Cheick Kongo vs. Heath Herring, Josh Koscheck vs. Dustin Hazelett, Jorge Gurgel vs. John Halverson, and Luke Cummo vs. Luigi Fioravanti are rumored as well.

EVAN TANNER RETURNS TO UFC TO FIGHT OKAMI

NEWCASTLE-UPON-TYNE, England – Late last year, Evan Tanner announced that he had signed to once again compete in the Ultimate Fighting Championship. Now there is a date and an opponent to round out his return.

As part of a question and answer session on Friday, UFC broadcaster Joe Rogan stated that Evan Tanner will face Yushin Okami when the promotion makes its Canadian debut.

That event will be headlined by a championship bout between current welterweight titleholder Matt Serra and interim champion Georges St. Pierre. It will take place on April 19 at the Bell Centre in Montreal.

Joe Silva, UFC’s vice president of talent relations, confirmed Rogan’s comments about the fight.

Tanner last fought more than one-and-a-half years ago at UFC 59 where he defeated Justin Levens by triangle choke. He won the middleweight championship at UFC 51, defeating David Terrell by TKO. His reign didn’t last long though, as he lost the belt to Rich Franklin four months later.

The 36-year-old fighter out of Amarillo, Texas has long been considered a nomad, never staying with one fight camp for very long. Tanner has spent time training with teams such as Team Quest and Chute Boxe USA, but is currently training at Hard Knocks Muay Thai in Las Vegas. He has also recently traveled to Utah to train with Josh Burkman, who fights in the main event of UFC Fight Night on Jan. 23 against Mike Swick.

Rogan also stated that the UFC has been talking with Hayato “Mach” Sakurai, Norifumi “Kid” Yamamoto and Takanori Gomi amongst others, but as far as he is aware nothing is solid with any of them.

COACH VS. STUDENT AT SPIRIT MC ON SUNDAY

Spirit MC is the largest mixed martial arts organization in South Korea, a self-reliant success story in a country where nearly every other professional sport receives financial subsidies from the government.

They put on quality shows with the some of the best Korean talent, fighters from visiting North American gyms like Team B.J. Penn and American Top Team, and the occasional quirky fan draw, like Ultimate Fighting Championship’s referee and journeyman heavyweight Herb Dean.

Spirit MC is coming up in the world, having joined the likes of Icon Sports, Cage Rage and King of the Cage as a ProElite partner organization, but they’re not above imitating an idea that works.

About this time three years ago, in what has proven to be a very shrewd business and marketing decision, the UFC launched “The Ultimate Fighter” on Spike TV. Cashing in on the reality television momentum generated by shows like Survivor and Temptation Island, the UFC’s golden gimmick was designed to generate advertising revenue, further market the organization to existing MMA fans, and introduce the sport to millions of prospective fans in a semi-fuzzy, human interest story setting.

As an added bonus, Ultimate Fighter would create virtually free brand name equity for every fighter on the show and leave the UFC with the pick of the assembled competitors signed to its promotion at the end of the tournament. And, of course, there would always be the chance that a few of those aquisitions would become world-class fighters.

The idea worked, and promoters in Korea took notice.

Just eight months after the first episode of The Ultimate Fighter, the XTM Cable Network began taping “GO! Super-Korean” in co-operation with Spirit MC. Spirit MC didn’t spring for a house, or even much training, but they did recruit fighters from a variety of martial arts disciplines and, like the UFC, managed to sign some very legitimate talent in the process.

On Jan. 20, two of the best from the series, “Crazy” Kwang Hee Lee (from season two) and “Mr. Perfect” Kyoung Ho Kang (from season three), will meet in Spirit MC 14 to fight for the welterweight title.

Lee is the current champ and at 22, he is, by comparison, the veteran in the match up, having earned tournament victories in kickboxing, jiu-jitsu, and MMA (King of Fight and Neofight) prior to signing with Spirit MC. He has two title defense victories over A-Sol Kwon, both by knockout.

To say Lee is heavy-handed would be an understatement. His highlight film is a (humorous) horror show of KO’s and he is notorious among his sparring partners (in a very unfunny way) for his hard overhand rights.

He was also Kang’s coach on “Go! Super Korean 3.”

“Even though I lost when I was on Super Korean, I always wanted Kang to be the winner. We are not from the same gym, but we are very close and I think I’ve helped him a lot. I’m not so happy that we have to fight, but I can’t help it, and I’m sure Mr. Perfect wants the belt.”

Mr. Perfect, Kyoung Ho Kang, is seemingly the “Ali” to Lee’s “Foreman,” if that comparison can be risked concerning Korean welterweights. Kang is a handsome guy, bordering on “pretty boy,” but soft spoken and polite.

His flying knee kick knockout of Ham Seong Chul was the clip that ran endlessly on commercials for the Super Korean series, and though he’s a relative novice compared with Lee, he has certainly generated more than his share of publicity for the fight. Kang is understandably modest about his prospects for victory against his former coach.

“Kwang Hee and I are like brothers, close ones. We used to eat, sleep and train together during the TV show and he cheered me up every time I had to fight. It’s sort of a sad opportunity that I get to challenge him, but it’s also an honor to have this chance.”

From a matchmaker’s perspective, it should be an interesting fight, as Kang has a well-rounded game and a tireless work ethic in the ring. He is undefeated both as an amateur and as a professional, and has yet to show much of a weakness in his arsenal. The unknown is his chin, which will certainly be tested early by Lee.

SHAW TO WHITE: "LET HIM FIGHT OUR FIGHTERS"

The war of words between Ultimate Fighting Championship president Dana White and EliteXC live events president Gary Shaw continued on Wednesday when, during a media conference call, the feud was brought up and Shaw had strong words in response to what White said recently.

“All I'm saying is, and I've said it all along, there is a differentiator. If you fight for the UFC, you can't be bigger than Dana White and the UFC,” said Shaw.

“If you fight for EliteXC, as a fighter, you're bigger than Gary Shaw. It's about the fighter. It's not about me. Whether it's Kimbo, who was signed to us, or any other fighter. I believe we represent some of the greatest fighters in the world. I believe that Antonio ‘Big Foot’ Silva could knockout any heavyweight in the UFC.”

Speaking about Antonio Silva, Shaw also confirmed that he will fight on the Feb. 16 card facing Cage Rage heavyweight champion Gary Turner in a bout that could showcase two of the best up-and-coming big men in all of MMA.

Shaw also had some complementary things to say about the UFC and what its done for the sport of mixed martial arts, but was quick to point out the exclusivity they keep with their fighters.

“Now, I'm not disparaging the UFC. They have some great fighters and great fights. They have a good brand,” he stated. “They do a good job marketing their brand, but they don't own MMA. They don't own the space. They have a brand."

“You know what, if you hold up the belt there, all you are is the club champion. Until Dana White is willing to fight his fighters against other brands; all they are is club champions.”

The open challenge was extended to White and the UFC to put their fighters against the fighters from EliteXC, and while Shaw made a strong gesture, a co-promoted show between the two organizations will likely never happen.

“I extend the challenge and always have. It's like Kimbo; you want to fight him? Call us up, you can come in the cage and fight him,” said Shaw. “You want to fight Jake Shields, fight Jake Shields. We're proud of the people we represent. Robbie Lawler, I could go down the whole roster.”

Despite the challenges and compliments towards the UFC and their fighters, Shaw was quick to once again point both barrels at UFC president Dana White.

“For Dana White to try to convince the fans that he owns all of the best fighters in the world. To say that this is just a starting point for fighters and then they're going to go to UFC. He is full of (expletive),” said Shaw with conviction. “Let him fight our fighters.”

DIEGO SANCHEZ TO FACE ROAN CARNEIRO AT UFC 82

Diego Sanchez will return to action on March 1 in Columbus, Ohio and will face new American Top Team member Roan Carneiro, as Sanchez himself announced via his MySpace page on Friday.

Sanchez is coming off of back to back losses to Josh Koscheck and Jon Fitch, the first losses of his career, and he hopes to get back on track in the fight with Carneiro.

The Ultimate Fighter season one winner also recently talked about his new team of trainers which will consist of Rob Garcia, who will handle his stand-up and strength and conditioning, along with Saulo and Xande Ribeiro, who will work with Diego on his ground game.

Carneiro currently sports a 2-1 record inside the Octagon with his lone loss also coming at the hands of Jon Fitch, but recently the fighter migrated to the American Top Team academy in Florida where he will train alongside one of the best MMA camps in the world.

The fight could be a ground clinic as both competitors are known for their tremendous jiu-jitsu games, and while no official announcement has been made by the UFC regarding this fight it is believed this match-up will go on the main card for the pay-per-view featuring a headline title fight between champion Anderson Silva and Dan Henderson.

This will be the second trip to Columbus for the UFC, the first of which being UFC 68 which is still one of the largest live audiences the promotion has ever had for an event.

UFC BACK TO COLORADO, ADDS PARISYAN VS. ALVES

The Ultimate Fighting Championship on Saturday announced its return to Colorado, the state where the promotion got its start. UFC Fight Night 13 is scheduled for April 2 at the Broomfield Event Center in Broomfield, which is about 15 minutes outside the state’s capital of Denver.

The main event features Ultimate Fighter veterans Kenny Florian, the MMAWeekly.com No. 10 ranked lightweight fighter in the world, and Joe Lauzon doing battle to narrow down the 155-pound division’s list of contenders.

“We are excited to have a fight where the UFC first started, and also that UFC fans will be able to watch it on Spike TV,” said UFC president Dana White. “Lauzon and Florian will be a great comeback fight - these are two young guys who show improvement every time they get in the Octagon. Both of these guys want to be the best young lightweight in the sport, and have the chance to prove it in a fight for the title.”

Also officially announced are bouts pitting Stephan Bonnar against Matt Hamill and Karo Parisyan, currently ranked No. 6 in the welterweight class, facing Thiago Alves.

The UFC first made its mark at McNichols Arena in Denver in November of 1993. The promotion followed that with its second event in March of 1994 in Denver and a third UFC, Ultimate Ultimate 95 in December of 1995, before the City and County of Denver banned the competition.

Mixed martial arts has been sanctioned by the Office of Boxing in Colorado for several years now, but April marks the first time that the UFC will return to the state under the ownership of Zuffa, LLC.

DANA WHITE CONFIRMS PENN VS. SHERK AND MORE

NEWCASTLE-UPON-TYNE – In his post-fight comments following B.J. Penn’s lightweight championship victory over Joe Stevenson, Ultimate Fighting Championship president Dana White confirmed that Sean Sherk would be Penn’s first defense. He stated that the bout is planned for an unannounced event in May.

Much was made leading up to Saturday night’s main event at UFC 80 of Penn’s legacy in mixed martial arts. The win over Stevenson made him only the second fighter in UFC history to win a title in two different weight classes. The first was disgruntled heavyweight champion Randy Couture.

White stated that if Penn is able to defeat Sherk and hang on to the lightweight title, he could eventually see him returning to the welterweight division to fight Georges St. Pierre, assuming that St. Pierre still holds the belt if and when that time comes.

Aside from announcing Penn versus Sherk, White also indicated that Fabricio Werdum would be first in line to face the winner of Tim Sylvia and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, assuming that Couture doesn’t change his mind and decide to return and fight for the UFC. The winner of Sylvia versus Nogueira will be crowned the promotion’s interim heavyweight champion as the UFC refuses to strip Couture of his title designation, disgruntled or not.

Having recently taken up house with the Chute Boxe camp in Brazil, a newly aggressive Werdum defeated Gabriel Gonzaga on Saturday night, earning his shot at the interim champion.

Continuing with fighter related topics, White also said that Andrei Arlovski would be fighting at UFC 82 on March 1. He is expected to face an undefeated Jake O’Brien.

He also stated that Tito Ortiz would be fighting in May, if he accepts the UFC’s offer to face Lyoto Machida.

Other post-fight news and notes from Dana White:

–Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic is currently thinking about his future and is undecided about what his next move is.

–Croatia, Scotland, Germany and Dublin are all “on the map” now and that the UFC plans to run an event in Germany this year.

–UFC intends to return to England in June at the O2 Arena in London.

– Season seven of The Ultimate Fighter, featuring coaches Quinton Jackson and Forrest Griffin, will start shooting following Jan. 23’s UFC Fight Night 12 event.

– World Extreme Cagefighting is being moved around, starting with the Feb. 13 event in Albuquerque, N.M., but won’t be coming to the U.K. until next year.

Other UFC 80 notes:

– Announced attendance of 8,412

– No. 1 selling event in the history of the Metro Radio Arena

– Fight of the Night awarded to Paul Kelly and Paul Taylor (Each fighter given a $35,000 bonus)

– Knockout of the Night to Wilson Gouveia ($35,000 bonus)

Fabricio Werdum Earns Title Shot — And the Reasons Why

With his come-from-behind victory over Gabriel Gonzaga at Saturday’s UFC 80 event, Fabricio Werdum — who owns a mere 1-1 record in the UFC — has been granted a heavyweight title shot. He’ll take on the winner of an interim title fight between Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Tim Sylvia that headlines next month’s UFC 81 event.

UFC Dana White confirmed Werdum’s upcoming shot at the belt during UFC 80, according to our partners at Yahoo! Sports. (The UFC, of course, is assuming that estranged heavyweight champ Randy Couture, who announced his resignation from the organization in October, will turn down the fight.)

Werdum (10-3-1 MMA, 1-1 UFC) is no doubt a top-10 heavyweight. In fact, in my rankings for FIGHT! Magazine and the World Alliance of Mixed Martial Arts, I had him in the seventh spot — just behind Gabriel Gonzaga. (He’ll go up a spot or two with Saturday’s victory, though.)

However, is Werdum really ready to fight for the title? Will UFC fans consider it a legitimate main event if the UFC gives the fight headliner status?

Your casual UFC fan has seen Werdum fight twice. He dropped a unanimous decision to Andrei Arlovski back at UFC 70 in a hugely disappointing fight. In fact, the winner of that fight was considered a lock for an immediate title shot, but the fight flopped so badly that Gonzaga got the fight instead. The other time UFC fans saw Werdum fight? On Saturday — in a fight he was losing pretty badly. Gonzaga chopped down Werdum with a series of leg kicks, but the 30-year-old rebounded with a stunning TKO in the second round.

So does that body of work warrant a title shot? Not on its own. In fact, even when you take into consideration Werdum’s PRIDE Fighting Championships resume (which includes a 4-2 record), he fought only three really significant opponents — and he went 1-2 in those fights. He secured a second-round submission of Alistair Overeem, but he also dropped a unanimous-decision to Nogueira and a split decision to Sergei Kharitonov.

So, why does he get a title fight so soon in the UFC?

Honestly, there aren’t many other options. Couture appears finished with the UFC, Gonzaga already got his shot, Arlovski could be fighting for the final time in the UFC in March, Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic has been struggling and is unsure about his future in MMA (according to White anyway), Brandon Vera is coming off a loss, the world’s other top heavyweights (Fedor Emelianenko, Josh Barnett and Aleksander Emelianenko, for example) don’t fight for the UFC, and the UFC’s other heavyweights (such as Jake O’Brien, Eddie Sanchez, Justin McCully and Antoni Hardonk) are far from ready.

Other than Werdum, there are two other options: the winner of a UFC 81 fight between Frank Mir and UFC newcomer Brock Lesnar (who are both at least a couple fights away from a title shot), or the winner of a UFC 82 fight between Cheick Kongo and Heath Herring (who are legitimate, if not optimal, options).

So basically, aside from maybe Kongo and Herring, Werdum’s the only heavyweight left to fight for the title.

Werdum’s a hugely talented fighter. He has an array of skills and has demonstrated remarkable resiliency, and he has the skills to beat Sylvia or Nogueira on any given Saturday. But as far as his upcoming title shot, it appears to be more about good timing and a lack of viable options.

M-1 Global Eyes April U.S Debut

While M-1 Global's U.S. debut has been very slow to get off the ground, preparations for another joint project -- this one in Holland -- are already running at full speed.

Fedor Emelianenko (Pictures) and his manager, Vadim Finkelstein, were in Los Angeles over the weekend along with M-1 Global Vice President Apy Echteld. Officially the trio made the trip to California because Emelianenko is spearheading a large-scale advertising campaign for Affliction, a popular clothing company.

Finkelstein, however, made no secret of the fact that they were also planning to meet UFC heavyweight champion Randy Couture (Pictures). On the agenda was Couture's health -- the 44 year old recently reinjured the arm he had broken in his last title defense against Gabriel Gonzaga (Pictures) -- as well as the lawsuit between the fighter and Zuffa.

Obviously M-1 Global is working hard even in the early stages to make the multi-million dollar Couture-Emelianenko fight happen.

In the short-term, M-1 Global pushed back its U.S. debut from February to April. The promotion had the chance to book the United Center in Chicago for Feb. 16 but opted against it as fighter negotiations had not progressed accordingly. April 11 now appears to be the targeted date for either the Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Ill., or the Izod Center in East Rutherford, N.J.

Regardless of venue and date, Emelianenko is headlining the event. As for his opponent, Dutchman Semmy Schilt (Pictures) seems to have overtaken Pedro Rizzo (Pictures) and Jeff Monson (Pictures) in favor with Finkelstein and company. The three-time K-1 World Grand Prix champion made a successful comeback to MMA on Jan. 12 and will be in Moscow the second weekend in February to negotiate the details.

Despite his impressive merits, Schilt is virtually unknown stateside. In fact, an Emelianenko-Schilt fight could be pushed back for a show in Holland, where it would be a huge draw. Consequently, IFL star Ben Rothwell (Pictures), winner of 13 straight, is also in the raffle for a crack at the Russian.

Meanwhile in the Netherlands, preparations for the first M-1 Global Challenge are in full swing.

Similar to the Yarennoka show in Japan on New Year's Eve, the event will be a joint venture with Slamm Events, one of the biggest kickboxing promoters in the Netherlands, to have a 20-bout mega show at the Topsportcentrum in Almere, 25 miles east of Amsterdam.

The crowd at the small but mighty 3,000-seat arena will be treated to the fourth edition of the highly popular Nederland vs. Thailand series in which the best kickboxers from Holland take on some of the biggest stars from the homeland of Muay Thai. In the main event, two-time K-1 World MAX champion Andy Souwer (Pictures) will square off against Lumpinee and WBC Muay Thai world champion Yodsaenklai Fairtex.

The marquee bout of the M-1 Challenge MMA portion of the card will feature Armenian Gegard Mousasi (Pictures) moving up in weight to fight experienced Dutch knockout artist Dave Dalgliesh in a light heavyweight contest.

Additionally, a rematch between Dutch bad boy Brian Lo-A-Njoe (Pictures) and Russian vale tudo regular Sergei Bytchkov is scheduled. In two all-Dutch duels, lightweights Oktay Karatas and Furdjel de Windt (Pictures) as well as Romano de los Reyes and Vincent Latoel will battle for 161-pound supremacy.

German fighter Cengiz Dana confirmed in an interview with groundandpound.de that he will also be part of the show. Submission master Ricardo Wondel, one of the primary ground fighters in Holland, has also been connected with M-1 Global.

Because preparations for Slamm IV are taking so much time, the M-1 Global Challenge Germany, originally scheduled for April, has been postponed to the second quarter of 2008.

Nonetheless, most of Germany's top fighters have already announced their support of the show. Currently in the front row for the five spots at 139, 161, 183, 205 and 205-plus pounds are grapplers Jesse-Björn Buckler (featherweight) and Franco de Leonardis (lightweight) and kickboxers Andi Asangarani (middleweight), Martin Vath (light heavyweight) and Marko Zschörner (heavyweight).

As there could be a preliminary qualification round before the first official event, the jury is still out on who will represent Germany.

Besides Team Holland and Team Germany, there will also be Russian, French, European, Japanese and American teams competing in M-1 Global Challenges around the world. Fighters who are impressive at those tryout shows will be drafted into the bigger events, where they will get a shot at established superstars.

The first "big show" is casting its shadow already. Just like in 2005 and 2006 with the Rotterdam Rumble and Pride & Honor events, Echteld is planning a big event at the 10,000-seat Ahoy Arena in Rotterdam. While the show doesn't have a name yet, it is rumored to take place on Oct. 4.

IFL UNVEILS NEW LOOK FOR 2008

The International Fight League unveiled a new company logo on Monday to go along with the promotion’s new direction for 2008. It also officially announced the move from a team vs. team format to the new camp vs. camp fights.

The new logo changes the company’s color scheme and will be seen throughout all future advertising, television, and merchandise.

Also, IFL CEO and president Jay Larkin announced the official move of the league to a camp vs. camp format that will take effect with the 2008 roster of fights.

The league created logos such as the Wolfpack, Silverbacks and Pitbulls have been abandoned for the more widely recognized camp titles such as Team Quest, Miletich Fighting Systems, and the Renzo Gracie Academy.

“The IFL has always showcased the top up-and-coming athletes, coached by the legends of MMA,” said Larkin. “Our new identity is part of the league’s renewed commitment to putting together the best match-ups to a wide, burgeoning audience of fans worldwide.”

The first IFL show for 2008 with the new format in place is set to take place on Feb. 29 at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas.

STRIKEFORCE ANNOUNCES BOB SAPP'S OPPONENT

Strikeforce announced on Monday that the main event of its debut event at the Tacoma Dome on Feb. 23 in Tacoma, Wash. will feature Bob Sapp vs. Jan Nortje.

The bout will be Sapp’s second since returning recently at K-1’s Premium 2007 Dynamite on New Year’s Eve. The 6’6”, 360-pound fighter holds a 9-2-1 professional record in mixed martial arts. His only losses are to Kazuyuki Fajita and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira.

Nortje, who maintains a 1-5 professional record in mixed martial arts, is a 6’11”, 330-pound K-1 kickboxing veteran and professional boxer. He is also a former training partner of Sapp’s.

“I’m extremely excited,” said Nortje. “I’ve always seen Bob get big opportunities so I think it’s my turn to show what I can do against him.”

A native of South Africa, Nortje relocated last year to Las Vegas, where he has been training with K-1 superstar and world kickboxing champion Ray Sefo.

“It’s been a great experience so far. Ray is so knowledgeable in all areas of fighting,” Nortje said.

“Stirkeforce at the Dome” also features former UFC heavyweight champion Maurice Smith facing six-time world kickboxing champion Rick Roufus, who will be making his professional MMA debut.

UFC NOT LIKELY IN HAWAII UNTIL 2009

Although fight fans in Hawaii are ready and so is the promotion, the Ultimate Fighting Championship isn’t likely to make its Hawaiian debut until at least the second half of 2009.

According to an article by Billy Hull in the Honolulu Star Bulletin, UFC president Dana White had been planning to hold an event at Aloha Stadium as soon as later this year, but mixed martial arts regulation is not yet finalized.

“Thirteen new states regulated MMA last year and Hawaii is one of them,” said White recently, “so we want to come there, but the regs aren't done yet. We're not like all these other ‘cheese ball’ shows; we can't go there until the regs are done.”

What he’s referring to, says Hull, is House Bill 1866, which establishes many new rules that govern MMA in Hawaii. It was enacted into law in July of 2007, but doesn’t go into effect until July 1, 2009.

The UFC has been very aggressive in expanding its markets recently, moving across the United States and the United Kingdom and consistently promising further moves across Europe and into Canada, so its not unreasonable to think that it will set up the Octagon in Honolulu as soon as regulation goes into effect
