The UFC still has interest in Takanori Gomi

With Fedor Emelianenko, Brock Lesnar, and Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou now all under contract, the two biggest free agents currently on the open market are Josh Barnett and Takanori Gomi.

Barnett has received lucrative offers from both M-1 Global and EliteXC, while little is known about the status of Gomi. Many have said that he is holding out from a strong offer from one of the Japanese MMA promotions such as K-1 HERO's, World Victory Road, and possibly even the group behind organizing Yarennoka!

However, the UFC should not be ruled out as a possible destination. According to Gary Herman of CBSSports.com and 15rounds.com, Gomi attended UFC 79 in person on Saturday and even spoke briefly with UFC president Dana White.

After the event, White confirmed that Gomi was indeed in the building and that the promotion is still interested in him:
"I've wanted to sign Takanori Gomi for a long time. I am very interested in him,"

However, based on White's comments, it doesn't sound as though any serious negotiations took place over the weekend:

"Gomi was just here to watch the fights," White said, "He did stop by and say hello though."

I had ruled out Gomi going to the UFC a while back because I didn't think he could make as much money in the States as he could in Japan because of sponsorships. However, soon after making that statement I was corrected by people who have a better grasp of the Japanese MMA scene than do I. The feeling is that Gomi is not a big mainstream star in Japan and isn't as big over there as PRIDE would have liked many in North America to believe.

While PRIDE is likely never to hold another show again, the UFC has yet to officially shut it down. Since Gomi was never stripped of the PRIDE lightweight title, he's still technically the promotion's champ.

Right now the plan is to have Sean Sherk face whoever wins the UFC lightweight title between B.J. Penn and Joe Stevenson at UFC 80 in January, but having another "Super Bowl of MMA" match between Gomi and the winner of Sherk vs. Stevenson/Penn would be an intriguing matchup. Gomi vs. Penn II, Gomi vs. Stevenson, or Gomi vs. Sherk could all potentially be great fights.

An idea for possible first-ever IFL pay-per-view

Ryan Schultz's upset victory over Chris Horodecki during the finals of the IFL World Grand Prix on Saturday has shaken the IFL lightweight division on its heels heading into 2008. With Schultz's win, suddenly it's not the Chris Horodecki division and the stage is now set for some very intriguing potential title matchups next year.

People can say what they want about the IFL, but they have a lot of legit fighters. And their lightweight division is stacked. So stacked that I came up with an idea that would work well for the company's first pay-per-view.

There's no need to pay big money for someone like Kurt Angle, instead, simply do a one-night, old school style eight-man tournament in the lightweight division that would feature Horodecki, Schultz, Bart Palaszewski, Savant Young, Shad Lierley, John Gunderson, Deividas Taurosevicius, and Erik Owings.

While the potential buyrate wouldn't challenge a typical UFC buyrate, having the promotion's eight best lightweights compete in a one-night tournament is something you can sell to hardcores. If marketed right, it's also a concept that could pique the interest of novice fans. And financially, using a single division that's already under contract to your promotion as opposed to trying to sign high-price talent as draws could be much for economically efficient.

Under the '07 format, the IFL couldn't utilize such a concept. However, with the relaxation of the team format in '08, there is a lot more freedom for the IFL to take chances such as a one-night tournament. By only having a best-of-three format instead of best-of-five format to determine team victories, it's much easier for a team such as the Anacondas to loan a fighter out like Horodecki for a concept such as this.

In the end, this idea will never happen for two major reasons.

One, while a one-night four-man tournament is feasible, I'm not sure there's a commission in the U.S. right now open to an eight-man bracket.

And second, it makes more sense financial for the IFL to sell the parity within their lightweight division over the course of an entire year as opposed to just one night.

Slice to Take on Tank

Kevin "Kimbo Slice" Ferguson (Pictures) will fight David "Tank" Abbott in the main event of a Feb. 16 EliteXC show in Miami, the promotion announced Friday.

Both fighters built reputations as street brawlers before turning to mixed martial arts.

Ferguson won his professional MMA debut in November, dispatching Bo Cantrell (Pictures) with punches after just 19 seconds. Abbott, 9-13-0, has won only one of seven fights since returning to the sport in 2003 after a stint in professional wrestling.

The card, which will take place at the BankUnited Center and air on Showtime, will also include Gina Carano (Pictures), Antonio Silva, James Thompson (Pictures) and a middleweight match between Scott Smith and Kyle Noke (Pictures).

Report: Serra to Fight St. Pierre in Montreal

UFC welterweight champion Matt Serra (Pictures) will get a chance to validate his upset over Georges St. Pierre (Pictures) when he fights the Quebecer in Montreal this April.

Serra, forced out a Dec. 29 title defense against Matt Hughes (Pictures) when he herniated a disk, confirmed the rematch to NBCsports.com and said his bad back has been "rapidly improving." The 26-year-old St. Pierre replaced Serra (9-4) on the UFC 79 card, winning the interim title via armbar submission over Hughes. Afterwards, St. Pierre said he wouldn't consider himself UFC champion again until he defeated Serra.

A heavy underdog, Serra, 33, captured the UFC 170-pound championship with a stunning first-round stoppage of St. Pierre (15-2) in Houston, Texas, last April. The Long Island, New Yorker earned his shot after winning Season 4 of "The Ultimate Fighter."

Serra-St. Pierre tops the first UFC in Canada, which is expected to take place April 19 at the Bell Centre.

DESPITE POSTPONEMENT, CUBAN COMMITTED TO MMA

Officials from HDNet Fights on Friday confirmed that the promotion’s planned event for Feb. 15 in Dallas has been indefinitely postponed.

“The date was tentative and we moved the date to first solidify all the partnerships we have been forming for 2008,” explained CEO Andrew Simon. “We plan to do 24 live fights in 52 weeks and actually had five in the month of December alone. We want to make our partners strong in 2008 and at the same time build the HDNet Fights brand.”

Mark Cuban, who founded both the HDNet television network and HDNet Fights, added some intrigue, telling MMAWeekly.com, “We think we can improve the quality of the card. We have to get some contractual clarification on one fighter in particular.”

He would not name names – leaving everyone to speculate if that fighter might be Ultimate Fighting Championship heavyweight titleholder Randy Couture – saying only, “I can’t comment on that,” when asked who that particular fighter is.

Cuban does believe, however, that fighter can make a big difference in the promotion’s next event if he is available. “I didn't want to get caught having to rush together a card if he is available. Let’s just say, this match-up is worth waiting for.

“If he can't fight, we will set a date very quickly. That's the advantage of owning an arena,” referring to his ownership of the American Airlines Center in Dallas.

Couture is of particular relevance as he attended the most recent HDNet Fights event in December and proclaimed, ““I am not retired. I am waiting for my UFC contract to expire. I will fight Fedor Emelianenko.”

Adding to that, HDNet recently partnered with M-1 Global to air Emelianenko’s New Year’s Eve bout against Hong Man Choi live on its network.

Interestingly, Cuban did add that although HDNet Fights first two events were held in Dallas, there is the possibility of moving to another venue.

“There is always a chance we could hold it elsewhere. We are getting some very strong sponsorship interest that has some location elements to it. That said, it will most likely come down to American Airlines Center dates.”

One thing that Cuban was adamant about, HDNet Fights is not going away anytime soon.

“This wasn't a cancellation by any means, it was a postponement. There will be many, many more HDNet fights.”

UFC co-owner Lorenzo Fertitta speaks out in rare interview

Yahoo! Sports: Mixed martial arts surpassed boxing and wrestling in pay-per-view sales and revenue for the first time in 2006. But boxing appears to have overtaken MMA again in 2007. Would you characterize 2007 as a down year for MMA because of that?
Lorenzo Fertitta: We've shown we have staying power. We had a big year in 2005, a bigger year in 2006 and a big year in 2007. Boxing is always going to have its big fights. It's kind of like horse racing. There's always that Kentucky Derby, where one or two times a year everyone is going to watch. That's great. But in general, if you look at the consistency of our performance, I have been very happy with it.

Y!: But it seems like you had some shows in 2007 that just didn't do that well as they had in the past. Isn't that fair?

LF: Not really. I actually look at this the opposite way. One of the greatest successes that we've had, for instance, is the last show we did in New Jersey (UFC 78 on Nov. 17). We had a fight being headlined by two guys who had never fought for a championship and, relatively, had never been proven to be pay-per-view draws. But we basically sold out the arena in New Jersey and we did very strong, above average, pay-per-view. So to me, while it wasn't Liddell-Ortiz, that said more to me than one of what you might call one of our bigger fights did. It showed that our UFC brand can carry a whole show.

Y!: You had said when we spoke at UFC 72 in Belfast that you expected to be able to announce the addition of several significant new sponsors. It's more than six months later and nothing has been announced. Is the reason for this deal because the potential sponsors have had second thoughts about the UFC and where do those deals stand?

LF: There have been no problems at all. I think you'll see that 2008 is going to be a real breakthrough year for us from a sponsor standpoint. These deals take a long time to negotiate. We're confident we're going to have a big announcement in a month or two. The fact that we added Harley Davidson for this (UFC 79) card is a big deal. Sponsorships and advertising, we saw the same thing with The Ultimate Fighter. We had two or three seasons of unbelievable success before advertisers came on board. They're kind of behind a year or two maybe of what reality is. Once we announce some of these blue chip guys, I think everybody else is going to follow. Once you land that one blue chip, it gives you credibility and then everyone else is going to want in. Everybody is looking. Everybody knows we're here. Once we take that first step, everyone is going to pile on.

Y!: You've run into problems recently that you haven't had before. The whole dispute with Randy Couture has put the UFC in a negative light. Tito Ortiz has made comments about forming a fighters' union and hoping the fighters will be treated more fairly. Is this a natural outgrowth of the explosion of the sport and how do you plan to handle what seems to be a growing labor problem?

LF: Our business is out in a public forum much more so than a traditional business would be. Yeah, Randy has come out and made everything very public. And Tito is always talking like that. He's been that way since we've owned this thing. One day we're the greatest and he's super happy and the next day we're not. He's like a roller coaster, so that doesn't concern me too much. Overall, the majority of our guys are extremely happy. We've done a great job of promoting them. One of the things we do is that we invest heavily in the brand. We spend tens of millions of dollars on marketing. We're investing back into the sport. What that does is make everything more valuable for the fighters going forward. They should be happy that we invest back into the sport, because it continues to grow and they can make more money. This isn't a short-term thing.

Y!: You've had to address the whole money issue much more than you ever have. You held a news conference to talk about what Randy Couture was making. You're criticized greatly for the amount the fighters are paid. (At UFC 79) Chuck Liddell is making a purse of $500,000, according to the Nevada Athletic Commission. Floyd Mayweather was guaranteed more than $11 million when he fought Ricky Hatton earlier this month. Why is there such a disparity between what the top boxers make and what the top MMA fighters earn?

LF: You have to understand that the UFC has a completely different business model than boxing. We are in a situation where we're not only the promoter, but we pay for all of the production, where as in boxing, the promoter doesn't pay for any of that stuff. HBO or the network does. We pay for all of the advertising and the marketing. If you're a boxing promoter, you don't do that. You don't come out of pocket. Boxing promoters take no risk up front. They get guarantees from the venue and from the networks, so they take no risk. We underwrite the entire thing. And like I said before, we invest into the sport to try to grow it by doing things like going to Europe. We took major losses in Europe (in 2007). We didn't make money on any of those European shows.

But looking forward five years, we realize that Europe is going to be bigger than the U.S. and a lot of those fighters are going to benefit from the way we've cultivated the European market.

The boxing way is to take a short-term approach, but we're focused on the long term, both for the brand and for the sport.

Y!: But with the explosive growth of this sport …

LF: A lot of people talk about the growth of MMA. I don't believe in that. I don't know where anybody can show me there is this great success in MMA outside of the UFC. There has been explosive growth for the UFC, but MMA in general, nobody is making a breakthrough. The biggest non-UFC pay-per-view, you might know better than me, but it's something like 25,000, maybe 30,000 buys. There is a bit of a misnomer there. It's not the growth of MMA. It's the growth of the UFC.

Y!: There are a lot of successful business people who are getting into MMA. Elite XC has a deal with Showtime. Mark Cuban is one of the richest guys in the world and he's beginning to make a move in MMA. Doesn't it indicate when people of substance like that get involved that the sport is growing to the point where it can be viable long-term as a business?

LF: Based upon our success, as with any business, you're going to get guys who are going to try to be the 'me, too,' person and want to try to hang on and build on the success that we've had. I don't necessarily think that that's a bad thing. There are always going to be others in the business and I respect what they're doing. I understand that. It's our job to stay ahead and continue to be the leader. At the end of the day, a lot of people are going to try to take shots at us. But what I like to say is, 'You can only tackle the guy with the ball,' and we have the ball.

Y!: Where do you stand in the dispute with Randy? How upset were you at the way it played out? What will your next step be to move forward? And do you see yourself getting involved personally to try to straighten out whatever the problem is that exists between the UFC and a guy who has been one of its biggest stars?

LF: I would say … You know, I don't even want to talk about Randy. I'm not being disrespectful, but because of the situation we're in, our attorneys, we're not even going to comment at all about Randy Couture.

Y!: But it can't help your brand to be at odds with a fighter who is so popular and whose nickname is Captain America, can it?

LF: I just can't say anything about that topic now. The situation is such that it's best that I don't say anything at all at this point.

Y!: The UFC president, Dana White, has become one of the biggest figures in the sport. But he's also controversial. What do you think of the job he's done and where can he get better? Has he ever said anything that just makes you groan and go, 'Oh, Dana,' when you hear about it?

LF: Bottom line, and I've said this before, but I don't think anybody could have accomplished what Dana has. It took somebody like Dana who's got street smarts, who doesn't pull punches, who speaks his mind, who never bull(expletive), to do this. At the end of the day, if we had taken a Harvard MBA and hired him in 2001 to run this company, we'd probably be bankrupt right now. There are so many things that are unconventional about this business. This isn't something you can read about and learn in a textbook. This is a business where, day-to-day, you have to be on the ground and you have to be on top of your game. Dana is that guy. I truly believe that Dana was put on the Earth to run the UFC.

Y!: Dana seems like one of those guys who, if you get on his bad side, you never get off. There was the whole thing with Matt Lindland, for instance. He's a fighter who by all rights should be in the UFC but is not. Do you talk to him about this and try to mediate any of these kinds of situations?

LF: We talk about different points, but Dana does what he wants to do. He's proven that he has great instincts and most of the decisions he's made have been for the best. Nobody is perfect, but I think Dana White has done a fabulous job building this company into far and away the industry leader and I'm not going to start telling him now how to do his job. He's proven he can do his job without me holding his hand.

Y!: Is the business better off at the dawn of 2008 than it was at the beginning of 2007?

LF: I believe it is, without question. Since we've had this, we've ended a year and could point to what I would consider a couple of significant accomplishments during the year that allowed us to move the business ahead and grow the brand. But I really believe that 2008 is going to be our best year. I think we're right in the perfect position

CHUTE BOXE COMING TO LOS ANGELES

The level of mixed martial arts is growing at a rapid pace and it is becoming increasingly difficult for a fight team that wants to become or even maintain a history of being victorious.

The teams are becoming real companies with training centers. Besides that, they are also becoming major sports career management companies.

Chute Boxe is no different. It has always been one of the largest producers of high-level MMA athletes in the world. Despite the recent departure of many of its top fighters – Wanderlei Silva, Mauricio “Shogun” Rua, Maurilo “Ninja” Rua, and Andre “Dida” Amade chief among them – Chute Boxe continues to grow and add new talents in preparation for 2008.

With the plans to expand its operations to maintain competitive and expand into new territories, Chute Boxe’s Master Rafael Cordeiro – who was the main coach responsible for fighters such as Wanderlei Silva, the Rua brothers, Anderson Silva, and Dida – along with Master Rudimar Fedrigo and jiu-jitsu coach Cristiano Marcelo are planning an expansion into America.

Having severed ties with former U.S. Chute Boxe representative Roberto Piccinini, Chute Boxe is in final negotiations to open an official camp in Los Angeles.

"The plans are to make a two way road between L.A. and Curitiba and to maintain this high level training in Curitiba and in L.A.,” Cordeiro told MMAWeekly.com.

“We want to put our boys to fight and train in both camps, Brazilian guys in L.A. and Americans going to Brazil to spend some time in our camp. This will elevate our athletes performance and at the same time we will recruit an excellent amount of new American and Latin athletes that are popping up in the U.S.A.”

Cordeiro is currently in the U.S. finishing up the negotiations, but added, “We are still looking for more partners who want to add their brand to ours.”

He did not indicate the exact location or opening date for the new camp.

Report: Lyoto Machida Offered Fight with Tito Ortiz

Just hours after MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) reported an apparent offer to Heath Herring for a fight with Cheick Kongo, the news comes out that undefeated UFC light heavyweight Lyoto Machida (12-0 MMA, 4-0 UFC) has been offered a fight with former UFC champ Tito Ortiz (15-5-1 MMA, 14-5-1 UFC).

Ed Soares, the manager for Machida, today told MMAWeekly.com that his fighter had been offered a fight with Ortiz — yes, they’ve accepted — and that they’re simply awaiting word on whether Ortiz has accepted the fight.

There was no mention of a possible fight date.

Just a week ago, Machida posted a UFC 79 victory by dominating UFC newcomer and former PRIDE standout Rameau Sokoudjo. Using his usual counter-striking style while peppering his opponent with head and leg kicks, Machida shut down Sokoudjo and scored a second-round submission victory.

It was his 12th straight win, including his fourth straight in the UFC.

Ortiz, a 10-year veteran of the UFC and a former light heavyweight champion, recently finished taping “The Celebrity Apprentice” with Donald Trump. The reality/game show debuted this week and airs each Thursday on NBC for the next three months.

Ortiz recently stated that he has one fight left on his current deal but that he’s negotiating directly with UFC co-owners Frank and Lorenzo Fertitta — not UFC President Dana White — for a new contract.

A new deal would most likely need to be in place before the fight with Machida becomes official.

Ortiz hasn’t competed in the UFC since a July UFC 73 draw with Rashad Evans.

Source: Heath Herring Offered UFC 82 Fight with Cheick Kongo

Rising heavyweight contender Cheick Kongo (11-3-1 MMA, 4-1 UFC) may meet veteran fighter Heath Herring (27-13 MMA, 1-2 UFC) at UFC 82 — an event that takes place March 1 at Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio.

A source close to Herring told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) that the fighter had been offered the rumored bout, plans to accept it, but hasn’t yet signed to make it official.

Neither Herring nor Kongo could immediately be reached for comment.

For Kongo, a victory could thrust the French fighter into immediate title contention. Aside from a close split-decision loss to Carmelo Marrero at UFC 64, Kongo has posted a spotless record in the UFC. The success peaked with an upset unanimous-decision victory over Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic at UFC 75 in September.

Kongo had been a rumored opponent for former UFC heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia. Sylvia himself even campaigned for the fight in a post-UFC 77 press conference. However, the former champ was instead tapped to fight Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira at UFC 81 next month for the UFC’s interim heavyweight title.

As for Herring, he’ll return to the octagon for the first time since his July loss to Nogueira. After flooring the former PRIDE heavyweight champion with a first-round head kick, Herring backed off from his opponent and allowed him time to recover. Nogueira stormed back for the unanimous-decision victory, and Herring opted to take a short break from competition after the loss.

Herring originally signed on with the UFC a year ago after the UFC purchased — and disbanded — the World Fighting Alliance promotion. He made his UFC debut with an upset loss to Jake O’Brien in January but rebounded for an entertaining unanimous-decision victory over Brad Imes in April.

UFC 82 is headlined by a title fight between UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva and former PRIDE standout Dan Henderson. For the latest UFC 82 fight card, check out the UFC Rumors section of MMAjunkie.com.

EliteXC Announces Jan. 25 “ShoXC” Fight Card; Yves Edwards in Co-Main Event

Elite Xtreme Combat today announced the fight card for the Jan. 25 “ShoXC: EliteXC Challenger Series” event that airs live on Showtime.

The event takes place at the Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City, N.J. The live card begins at 9 p.m. ET.

EliteXC has scheduled co-main events of UFC veteran Yves Edwards (31-13-3) vs. knockout artist Kyle Bradley (13-4), as well as English Cage Rage vet Paul Daley (16-6-2) vs. an opponent to be named later.

Edwards, once one of the UFC’s most promising prospects, lost five of six fights from September 2005 to July 2007 while competing for the UFC, PRIDE and Bodog Fight. However, he’s since rebounded for back-to-back victories, which included a second-round submission of Alonzo Martinez at last month’s “HDNet Fights: Reckless Abandon” show in Dallas.

Additionally, two of the world’s most notable female fighters will battle on the night’s televised broadcast when Julie Kedzie (9-6), who lost to Gina Carano in a fight-of-the-night performance at “EliteXC: Destiny” in February, takes on Tonya Evinger (5-3), who was submitted by Carano in a September EliteXC event. The fight, which takes place at 140 lbs., features three, three-minute rounds.

The full televised card includes:

Kyle Bradley vs. Yves Edwards
Paul Daley vs. TBA
Bobby McMaster vs. Bao Quach
Bellaton Frederick vs. Kala Kolohe Hose
Julie Kedzie vs. Tonya Evinger
Undercard (non-televised) bouts include:

Eddie Alvarez vs. Carlos Quinlon
Zach Makovsky vs. Wilson Reis
Binky Jones vs. TBA
Doug Gordon vs. Sergio Vinagre
Matt Makowski vs. Joe Shilling
ShoXC, which is the MMA version of Showtime’s popular boxing program called “ShoBox,” debuted in July with the intention of spotlighting up-and-coming MMA talent. EliteXC has produced three ShoXC events to date: July 27, Aug. 25, and most recently, on Oct. 26.

EliteXC has hosted previous ShoXC events in Santa Ynez, Calif. and Vickburg, Miss. Neither a ShoXC nor a regular EliteXC event has taken place in New Jersey, though a ShoXC event tentatively planned for Dec. 7 in New Jersey was reportedly canceled in early November.
