Cotto-Foreman: Deal Reached For Yankee Stadium Bout

By Mark Vester

Bxoing will return to Yankee Stadium for the first time since Muhammad Ali fought Ken Norton on Sept. 28, 1976. Top Rank CEO Bob Arum, who promotes both fighters and handled the Ali-Norton event in 1976, confirmed to the Associated Press that a deal was reached with the Yankees organization to hold Yuri Foreman vs. Miguel Cotto at the stadium on June 5.

Arum said the stadium will be scaled for about 30,000-35,000 seats. The ticket prices will be reasonable, with the amounts ranging from $400 to $50 dollars. Top Rank continues their talks with HBO to keep fight on the network. If they are unable to reach a deal, the fight will take place on pay-per-view.

Kind of an intriguing fight actually. Wanna see if Cotto can break him down, given his movement.

Didn't think Yuri had very much pop, but he definitely hurt Santos.

Should be a pretty cool fight. HBO worthy, IMO.

^^of course hbo is on a budget, all networks are, they are the ones that put the money (millions of dollars for the fight). In return they get (or hope) good ratings. They only make a ton of money of PPV events, and this fight would be on regular HBO if they decide to pick it up.

HBO in general was hit with budget cuts overrall for 2010, and HBO sports is no exception. They have to be very stingy with their money, thus the reason you'll see them turn down some really good fights. Bernard Hopkins vs Adamek was a perfect example of a fight that didn't happen because HBO can't go around writing blank checks anymore. There are countless other fights as well. It's a good & bad thing. The good is that it forces promoters to make good fucking fights (usually), the bad is that sometimes what appears to be a really good fight might get turned down because HBO doesn't think it will sell as good (they like guys with big names, popularity, etc.).

so naner or anyone else, what's your prediction for this fight?

I actually think Foreman is going to beat Cotto. I think style wise Foreman is all wrong for Cotto, plus he's a true 154 pound fighter, he's 5'11 and has a 72" reach and he can box very well. Cotto is not going to be able to chop him down like he can against guys his own size that stand in front of him. Cotto has also taken beatings in 3 of his last 4 fights (Margarito, Clottey & Pacquiao).

Even though Foreman isn't known as a puncher, he does have a little bit of pop, as shown against Santos. I think Foreman can possibly knockdown cotto, and if he goes in for the kill, may actually be able to stop him late (but unlikely).

Any thoughts on this? I'm really considering putting a little bit of money on this if the odds are good enough.

ima go with Cotto in this one, hes still one of the top guys just lost a little spark that he once had still hungry tho. Cotto has a lot to prove in this fight and I think he will do well against a feather fisted Foreman.

I'm on the fence. I think Foreman's movement and reach are going to give Cotto problems, but I do think that his frame, being a tall lanky guy, gives Cotto a lot of real estate for some solid body work.

Cotto, also has very underrated speed and can cut off the ring well.

Close decision for Cotto. He's super motivated, and will likely have the crowd behind him even though Foreman is also a New Yorker.

I like both guys though.

Yuri Foreman stayed a couple doors down from me at the MGM during Pacquiao-Cotto weekend, and he is a really nice guy. Hard to root against someone like that.

Hmm, very good points MOREBASS (damn you!).

Do you think Cotto's power is the same? He hasn't shown to be the powerful puncher in quite some time (or maybe that's just because of his recent opponents).

I don't know how motivated Cotto is, but I do know he just hired Buddy McGirt as his head trainer. I like McGirt sometimes, but I don't know if he's right for Cotto. I thought Emmanuel Stewart would have been PERFECT for him, being that Cotto has a good jab and Stewart loves his guys to use the jab. Cotto seems to always stop throwing the jab effectively after the first few rounds too.

This is a tough one, I'm going to think about it some more, but I really, really do not like Cotto at 154 pounds. I mean, pacquiao was practically the same size as Cotto at 147.

I just saw the guy at Gamblers Advisory is picking Foreman too:

He's not always right, but he makes some damn good points.

how so?

He doesn't really train too many people these days.
he aint no different then Phil Jackson, blessed to train a super natural athelte and gets credit for shit they were gifted with. all he did with Fighters like Hit man Hearns and the Klitschkos is teach them a good jab. All you have to do is listen to him commentate a HBO fight lol, just my opinion

well, he has trained some great athletes, but I gotta disagree there. Tommy Hearns for example had 162 Amateur fights, and out of all those fights he only knocked out 7 people. Emmanuel Stewart taught him how to really punch in the pro's and we know Hearns turned out to be one of the greatest punchers of all time.

I think he was better back then though compared to how he is now. The reason for that is back in the day, he trained them early, when they were just kids or just starting their pro careers. When he ran Kronk gym. Now days he only trains guys who are already stars or champs (like Klitschko, or when he trained Jermain Taylor or Kermit Cintron, etc.) and it's difficult to really change a guy too much late in the game.

Foreman only wins if Cotto's really that far gone, which I don't think he is. Cotto showed the same vulnerabilities in his last previous fights that he's shown his entire career, he just fought some of the best. Foreman hurt Santos but he just doesn't have that kind of pop.

.. he struggled with Tsurkan when Tsurkan bullied his way inside and attacked his body. Santos came out there like it was a guaranteed win and fought terribly, he won't have that same luck here.

Glad HBO picked this up..

Bob Arum is stupid for not putting Juanma on the undercard though...

Cotto-Foreman Officialy on HBO

Dallas, Texas. The fight between Miguel Cotto and Yuri Foreman will greatly influence the New York Yankees.

Not only the new Yankee Stadium will stage the bout on June 5, but the official announcement of the bout will take place in the coming weeks in the Yankees' spring home in Tampa, Florida. This was announced by Bob Arum, Top Rank big boss, who promotes Cotto's career both as Foreman.

"The first conference to announce the fight will be in Tampa on March 22 because the Yankees are in the fields of spring and then in early April (we will make another announcement) at Yankee Stadium," Arum told Primera Hora yesterday, While rejecting the possibility of doing a press conference in Puerto Rico.

"It will be the first time giving a press conference in the middle of a training camp to get warmed up the atmosphere. The one that really counts will be in New York, "he added.

Arum said that all details of the fight have been resolved and the bout will be televised live on HBO.

It is speculated that the match against Foreman might be the last in the race for Cotto, who has been a winner in the 140 and 147 pounds, and now seeks a crown at 154.

"I could not say whether it will be the last fight of Miguel. To me, he (Cotto) does not think so. All I know is that you'd like to win the title (Foreman), "said the veteran promoter.

Arum, on the other hand, is still planning the rest of the fighting which will include a poster attractive enough to sell the 30,000 tickets available to the public. However, said that Juan Manuel Lopez, 126-pound king, will not be included in the program.

"We are working on a good billboard. The plans we have for Lee is that he defends his title of World Boxing Organization (WBO) on 10 July, "said Arum.

Kinda looks like Calvin from McDonalds

Steward: "Miguel Cotto Can Not Afford To Lose Again"

By Rick Reeno

After taking a significant amount of punishment in three of his last four fights, former two-division champion Miguel Cotto knew it was time for a change. On Wednesday, Cotto officially announced one of the worst kept secrets in boxing, that he hired Emanuel Steward to replace Joe Santiago as the head trainer.

Cotto had his first training session under Steward on Wednesday, which took place at a gym in Humacao, Puerto Rico. The training session lasted for two hours, and included sparring, jumping rope and a short routine involving weights.

"I've always been one of his biggest fans, and although I didn't train him, I've studied him closely in all of his fights since his days as an amateur, so I know him pretty well, plus I've had a chance to talk with him and the chemistry has been good," said Steward.

"Miguel has a lot of talent and he can't finish his career with two defeats and a close decision. At this point in his career, he can not afford to lose another fight. His last couple of opponents would have been tough for anyone, but that doesn't mean that as a boxer he isn't required to work on certain technical skills and movements that he used to have when he first started in the sport. Miguel means a lot to his people. He has to work hard to regain those wonderful movements that he used to have and focus on the natural punching ability that made him an idol in Puerto Rico."

Steward will work Cotto's corner on June 5 when the Puerto Rican star moves up in weight to challenge unbeaten WBA junior middleweight champion Yuri Foreman at New York's Yankee Stadium. Against Foreman, Steward believes "speed" - and not power - is going be the key to victory. To beat Foreman by knockout is not a mandatory requirement, but the veteran trainer does want Cotto to "win impressively."

"He's a strong fighter, but above all very intelligent, and that is very important because a big part of training right is the psychological aspect. 40% of my work with him will be to talk and give advice, I know that he will understand me quite well, which will make things easier and make us work well together," Steward said.

Cotto is very happy with the addition of Steward and expects a very impressive performance against Foreman.

"[Steward] can contribute a lot, and not only for me but for the whole group, and that's why we went for Emanuel. Right now, everything depends on how well we prepare with the help of Emanuel, the help of Joe [Santiago], Phil [Landman], Bryan [Perez], and all of the other members of the team. I am very confident of victory," Cotto said.

On Thursday, Cotto, Steward, Landman and Santiago will travel to Tampa, Florida to set up their training camp. On Friday they will attend a press conference in New York's Yankee Stadium to officially announce the Foreman fight. On Saturday, Miguel's older brother, Jose Miguel Cotto, will join their camp to finish up his training for his fight with Saul Alvarez on the Mayweather-Mosley pay-per-view undercard on May 1 in Las Vegas.
