I definitely think he was Jack's dad. And Ben's daughter. And Echo's brother. And all the other dead people who keep showing up right after the smoke.

Where did they say everything could be explained by science? I'm guessing you mean the directors/producers/writers right? I must have missed that. Got a link?

The producers stated this before the season started. The internet here is very slow so you might have to search for it.

The producers have stated a lot of things early on and ended up going back on their word. So I don't really believe anything they have to say. If they say it can be explained by science, that they're not dead, that this isn't hell, not reality TV, not a figment of somone's imagination, not purgatory, etc.....i'm just skeptical at this point.

i thought so too. but jack's dad has appeared off the island a couple times, and isn't "the man in black" confined/trapped there?

Nah, the smoke monster can only take the form of people who are dead. Jack's dad's body showed up at the island, Locke's body showed up at the island, Echo's brother's body was on the island after he died in the plane crash, Ben's daughter didn't show up until after that crazy dude killed her. I think the Smoke Monster came as Richard's wife, but that doesn't make sense cuz her body was in Tenerife and not the island.

I'm still wondering why the Smoke Monster is permanently in Locke's body though, or how he lost his original body. All I know is that Jacob told them that in order to come back to the island, they needed things to appear as close as possible to the original plane crash, which included the people who left and a dead body. I think it's weird that Jacob would tell them to bring back a body, if the Smoke Monster could take that body over. This shit is driving me crazy!!!

But I don't think Jack's dad has appeared off the island since he died. All the flashback scenes were Jack's dad prior to his death, and in the flash sideways scenes, his dad is dead prior to the Oceanic flight back to LA.

he did; jack saw him twice after they got off the island.

Christian appeared to Jack twice after the departure from the Island. First, Jack caught a glimpse of Christian as he walked by in the hospital (although this might just be someone who looked like his dad). The second time also occurred at the hospital, while Jack was working late hours. Christian said Jack's name from a nearby sofa, but one of Jack's co-workers appeared and Christian vanished. Believing this to be a hallucination, Jack requested a prescription for clonazepam.
