The bottomline is if this was an accident he would have said as much right after the shooting. He wouldn't have lawyered up, refused to make a statement, and resigned from his job. Being that the judge overlooked these key facts during sentencing, not to mention the obvious cover up by his colleagues, proves the flaws and injustices that still exist in our system. What a crock. It was a tough situation given the racial implications, but ultimately a man lost his life. His killer is not only getting a slap on the wrist, but society is getting slapped in the face once again. This is why you kids need to stay in school and prevent these kind of injustices from happening. What's fair is fair and this just isn't.

He has every right to refuse to make a statement and hire an attorney. Just as you do.
The judge didn't overlook any facts. This is standard protocol and everyone does the same thing. I would as well.

I know he got away with murder, I'm not denying that.
There is a right way to do something, and a wrong way. I am just stating he did it the right way and he won his case long before the sentencing.

*devils advocate post*

OJ Simpson kills two white people and gets away with it, and the black community takes it as an epic win.
