I like to use "big words" in the place of cliche phrases but I generally never try to consciously insert "big words" into my every day speech. I like the what Orwell said: "Never use a complicated word or explanation when a simple one will do."

thats not an exact quote...

I agree^ but to have ThaG's or swoop187's extreme point of view is kind of idiotic. lol everything does not have to include "big words" which i would assume everyone is referring to words that are not as commonly used in everyday speech. but just because it is not as common, does not remove the value of its specificity or any other merits due to the circumstance.

Every word has a time and place for its use, even betterment. If i have just used the word improvement several times or in a sentence of 'initial irrevocable improvement.' or where the fluidity of a sentence is challenged, a synonym would be acceptable in my mind...

I have been criticized and given shit plenty of times for using 'big words.' Well, there are plenty of times i use them incorrectly but thats the only way i am going to learn when those words should be used in light of their specificity, nature of the conversation etc. The knowledge of the world is expanding and to say that we shouldn't use 'big words' shows you realllly don't have much of an understanding. That and why should we limit ourself to only 'big words' and not just uncommon? ever heard of laziness?

How about you rid yourself of that disgusting unwillingness to learn and we will all be good. Oh and overall intelligence is certainly not define by one's vocabulary, but may reflect one's array of knowledge and so on down the line..

not sure why hella people calling me lazy and shit lol. Im actually an English major who happens to possess an extensive vocabulary, if I must say so myself. This thread has nothing to do with my knowledge of obscure words. Carry on.
