I said corporartions and whites were not involved in rap on the scale they arfe now especially after chronic dropped, which is true.
Which mainstream rappers from back in the day do you consider positive to the black community and did "reality rap?" To me there's not much difference back then to what we have now, atleast in regards to content.
Chronic's power was that it sold extremely well to everybody and it hardly had anything positive on it, signaling the shift to gangster shit from more conscious rap.
Also, you had films like Boyz N The Hood that came out in 1991 that had a big effect on mainstream America, especially with Ice Cube playing the role of a gang banger.
Ice Cube was also doing gangsta rap since he left NWA in '89. He was like one of the biggest artists at the time, predating Deathrow, Snoop Dogg and the rest.
In '91 NWA's Efil4Zaggin went 2xPlatinum.
Dr. Dre's The Chronic went 3xPlatinum, so it's not like it was the big surprise you're making it to be.
