i knew this cat WHITE DEVIL should not be listened to when he starts saying AWAX is his favorite rapper.
A-Wax is one of my favorite "bay" rappers, of course he can't fuck with Too Short, but that don't really mean shit cause Short ain't even a "bay" rapper no more. That said, Rap and Hip-Hop is not even my favorite type of music no more.

But I still fuck wit it, of course. I still bump you know MD, 11/5, all kinda shit, but honestly, look at the wack ass "nu metal" shit of the 90s. Korn, Deftones, Pantera never had a song on the radio, and yet they all still made money.

That's where I would like to see bay music at. Not reliant on BET or MTV to make it happen.

the "hyphy movement" wouldnt be looked at as retarded in a bad way - its so similar to the crunk movement (dreads, showing your grill, high energy dancing etc.).

THE MAINSTREAM AUDINCE WILL LISTEN TO ANYTHING MTV/BET PLAYS THAT HAS A CATCHY HOOK AND THAT THEY CAN DANCE TO

ppl who listen to mainstream music are like sheep. theyre just directed from trend to trend and like anything mtv tells them to like. the hyphy music has the dance cheesy hook element, so its just a matter of someone like lil jon taking e-40 and keak to 106 and park with him and basically telling everyone - "im lil jon, i had something to do with this song, it sounds like your typical hip hop song and you guys can dance to it, so there you go, you will like it" - from there all 40, keak and the bay will be household names and all they need to do is keep making shitty formulaic mainstrem music talking about the bay and getting hyphy and everyone in america will be walking around looking like they just smelled some piss. its just a matter of a well known figure investing time and money in a bay artist or two and pushing it to the networks, and right now it looks like lil jon might be that guy. i could see it happening... hyphy hyphy hyphy hyphy hyphy!!!!!!!!

Not everyone who listens to music on the radio or watches videos is a mindless drone that does whatever the big corporations tell them to. I'm tired of that argument...

A hit record is NOT a hit record just because the big bad record labels tell us it's a hit record. If that was the case, EVERY record would be a hit record. I don't purchase something that I don't like just because I see it (or hear it) all the time - do you?

It's not that all music consumers are sheep. Music consumers just like "new". Something they haven't heard before. If it's (for example) Ashanti, well then Ashanti is going to sell. We all know she can't sing but you can't condemn the consumer and call them sheep when all they're doing is responding to what they happen to like. Which in most cases, the consumer don't even know what they like. Again, they just like "new".

The "Hyphy Movement" may run into a problem though. The single "Tell Me When .." which is supposed to introduce Hyphy to the mainstream is produced by Mr Crunk, Lil Jon. This may hurt the "movement" as people may not see this as something "new" but just a carbon copy of Crunk and may not catch on.

laffy taffy song. i gonna risk sounding close minded, but that song is FUCKING STUPID, yet everyone loves it. im not even gonna say that i just personally dont like it, but maybe its good. no, its just plain horrible from all angles. this is the point im trying to make - if i show up to a party and play laffy taffy and nobody has ever heard it before or heard of the guys who do it, id get kicked out the party like urkel. but if mtv plays the song, than ppl will accept it and enjoy it because mtv vouches for it. all mtv has to do is put a video on heavy rotation and itll just seep into its viewers consciousness till they like it. but like i said, there are certain elements required for this to work (catchy hook etc.), and the whole hyphy thing fills those requirements, so it'll work, its just a matter of force feeding it to the public

I agree ... Laffy Taffy is stu - stu ... stupid

Keep in mind that a song like this is (for the most part) on the radio long before it hits MTV and BET for video. So, if we start there (the radio), you'll find that some people actually like this song (as pathetic as that sounds).

Let's use "Tell Me When .." as an example (non payola):

"Tell Me When .." premiers on a local radio station at around 5:00p. They play it 2 - 3 times in a row because it's brand new. People like the song and start to request it. yada yada yada .. The song builds up steam and is picked up on radio stations across the country. Keep in mind the fans made this happen and not the corporate machine.

Once a video is made, it's a similar process. Let's say they premier (meaning showing it ONE TIME) the video on TRL, and people dig it - they'll vote it on. It catches on and gets played over and over and over. The fans made this happen not the record company or MTV. I'm not saying this is the only scenario, but this notion that the only reason why certain music is popular is because MTV is programming the people to like it is stupid and unrealistic.

I don't underestimate the amount of idiots that are out there, but I don't overestimate it either. Sometimes you gotta chalk it up to people (genuinely) liking what they like. Even if it's Laffy Taffy

crunk was out there for more than 10 years before it blew up, don't forget it; and when it finally became big, the media embraced the softest possible form of it; you still don't see Oomp Camp, Swat Team or all those local Memphis artists on MTV and BET

I think the hyphy movement could be accepted nation wide like the whole "crunk" thing for a few simple reasons...the whole get stupid go dumb thing has the party vibe people can get into...its already having great success here in the bay (I would like to see a lot more people actually BUY the shit though)...and people are always looking for something new...I think a big key would be consistency, where E-40 sets the table and is followed/puts on San Quinn etc, so the Bay becomes established and then the Mob Figaz, Mistah FAB, and whoever else can step in and have success...it would be nice if it happened but I wouldnt get my hopes up...

yeah i see what youre saying, and youre right to a degree, but i didnt say the ONLY reason ppl like certain music is cause mtv shows it, but i do think its the main reason. its kinda like a little brother liking everything his older square bear brother does, just cause its his older brother and he doesnt know any better. like i said, if a random guy played the laffy taffy song (before it became big), ppl would think hes stupid. but if their favorite radio station or mtv play it, theyll end up liking it. ive seen it personally in ppl. i used to play mac dre and nobody gave a shit about it. now its getting radio play and these same ppl are getting all excited dancing like gophers at the club.

could we just have a support good music movement!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
cant happen. business has taken over music and has watered down the actual art in it. if you wanna make some money maybe you should start making "dumb" and "stupid" music. if lil jon supports it, the rest will all fall into place
