when i hear stuff made from keyboards or what not i can tell. Especially if they're made from keyboards alone. They do sound kinda funny. When software is used the beats sound alot cleaner. I know that metallic sound u talkin about 50cal. My cousin Mac hears that shit too. What he would is add a vinyl sound to it. Now that sound or bassline sounds like it was sampled from a record, know what i mean? This mutherfucker is crazy. Alot of people that i hear that use FL studio and Reason sample alot. I never heard ur stuff yet Cctyzo Loc. But i'll definately listen to it when i get back. Thats what me and the homies do. We listen to fools thats tryin to put their names out there. We also like to compare our stuff with theirs. I think i heard Epik's shit before. I like his shit cuz it sounds like he made it from scratch. This was about a 6 months ago though. I cant listen to anything form this Gov't computer. Everthing is blocked.

yeah im still only a few years into production so i dont claim to have the best beats in town but most folks i fucc with love my shit and always beggin me for beats.....i make my shit all from scratch with FL Studio 7 running Spectrasonics Atmosphere and Trilogy Bass Synths VST's.....and i use the Nexus VST Synth with its expansion paccs......i control it all with an E MU 49 key XBoard controller.....i just gotta get better at coming up with melodies and such cuz after a while a lot of my beats start sounding similar to me but i dunno other folks seem to like em even more than i do.....

all i got is reason 3.0, a midi controller, acid, a buncha refills and samples. im gettin pretty good. i need some monitors tho! all i got is computer speakers

i always wanted to get a keyboard or and mpc but i really cant afford it.

i used a motif es6 a friend brought in 1 day but i sucked at it and to tell u the truth the sounds weren't really too groundbreaking, sounded like reason sounds....

i always thought the "real" producers used hardware. i guesss if u get your shit professionally mixed/mastered it really dont matter tho.

Tell me what you think about a couple of my beats, 6 beats actually in this example. I posted this example in another thread where my intention was to show the Lounge Lizard Electric Piano VSTi plugin with a funky wah/distorted flavor. I made it all in FL Studio7. I also played all the midi parts to each sound with my Axiom49 & Qwerty PC keyboard, so there's no sampled melodies or nothing, only sampled percussion sounds. I can't stand using sampled melodies, I like to be original, I feel more proud of my music that way, not to mention I find it easier to work and build up my tracks when I do it all from scratch myself.

I think it ain't bad for someone who has never played an actual instrument other than your basic keyboard. So I do it all by ear.

1 of 2 things could be happening
1 you are tone deaf
2.Need monitors

In my personal opinion I feel new beatmakers/producers/artsists dont realize the importance of a good set of monitors.Alot of these guys are using computer speakers, and Ive heard more then once that they use headphones..(wich doesnt mean results cannot be achieved)...but if your monitors are coloring your sound by boosting lows or hi frequencies..or even by not giving the true frequencies its hard to appreciate..or mix what sounds are coming out of them.I once was using computer speakers cause I was too cheap..my friend kept saying get monitors over and over....now that i have descent monitors I can hear a difference.

What you think about decent headphones though? I'm using Sony MDR-V600's which are considered decent. The sound is definitely better than coming from my desktop Cyber Acoustic speakers. I know your not supposed to mix in headphones though because of the lack of space and it's harder to judge bass, their better meant for critical monitoring of vocals, clicks/pops and such. :ermm: But that's kind of what I like about making beats with my headphones because I can hear all the small details as I go along.

i have heard the motif coming out of some nice monitors at a professional studio and it sounds good as shit. but i have heard reason beats sounding real nice in a professional studio. I know a guy who is a wizard at the motif thats all he uses and i have heard some nice beats come off it, at the same time the reason why i said the sounds weren't groundbreaking is i feel like its nothing i can't get in reason with all the refills these days... there is no exclusive sounds i have really heard that would make me save up all that money to get the board. and u know what i mean when u hear one of them sounds that just blows your mind.

Did yall know that u can get all the sounds from Motif, Fantom, Triton, and all them other funky keyboards on a disc. And then load them into your computer. Then ALAKAZAAM!! U got damm near $15,000 worth of sounds on ur computer. Now all u gotta do is buy a $200-$500 midi keyboard with all the little freaky knobs on it and set that bitch up. This is what my homies r tellin me. I think they're genius's

Actually for percussion sounds it probably would be the same. But for sounds like synths, guitar, piano,... it'll definitely be better coming out of the original keyboard, that way you get all the different note ranges, various velocities, sustain, and all that chit.

u can get a midi keyboard for around $100 bra

i had the motif sounds a while back before my computer crashed, quality wasn't all that great it was like 3 gigs of shit tho. we was usin it at the studio all the time tho. is funny cuz we would all be on reason wit the shit we had an mpc 2000xl down there just collecting dust. the only person who knew how to use it barely fucked wit it - didnt even make one solid beat on it. and when they brought the real motif in i think we only rapped on 1 beat that was tracked out all lazy no breakdowns and shit. that song was crap. the cat who made the good motif beats didnt give us 1 beat! we was gettin beats on the motif from people who make all their beats on reason....

No because the percussion and drum sounds have various velocities. Tap a key that has a snare sound and press hard on a key that as a snare sound and you'll get the different sounds. One will sound as if the snare is being hit in the middle, the other as if the snare is being hit close to the edge.

Yeah I suppose your right about that. But for Hiphop, I think most of us use a hard hit velocity or the same velocity on snares and claps. I personally can't stand a soft hit snare, I like that full slap. I'll just filter it some if I want it a bit softer sounding and or reverb. I like that funky shit, so I guess that's more my personal style.

If your layering it is ok to use different velocities, and on the motif some of the sounds actually sound better at lower velocities. You can always increase the volume by getting a good signal to noise ratio and by using proper compression techniques.

Again, with the motif it isn't about a softer sound. It is about the sound sounding as if it were that actual instrument. With real snares you get a different sound when you hit a snare in the middle as opposed to the outer area/edge. This is what many keyboards try to emulate when they multi-sample and apply different velocity settings to drum patches.

i dont see why it would sound better comming out the actual keyboard. All them keyboards are just computers with a piano form. Think about it man. Them funky keyboards got a screen, keys, knobs, etc. So does the computer. U get on reason or any other software they got all that shit and more extra shit. I dont make beats but i watch my brother and homies fuckin with that shit all the time. They always tell me crazy shit like what i'm telling yall. They all havent paid for anything. Everything they got was for from downloading. But yeah, they got all that shit. He just got all the Korg Oasis, and Yamaha files and another Fantom x8 file or something. He gots alot of the old casio shit too.
