CLOSING COMMENTS
Gran Turismo 5 is a 10/10 simulator wrapped up in a 5/10 game – driving is as exhilarating as anything that’s gone before, and slavish obsession with the minutiae of many of its cars ensure it's an encyclopaedia of automotive delights. Its brilliance on the track, however is matched by its sloppiness off of it, and there’s a lack of polish that would at one time have seemed sacrilegious to the series. Ultimately its driving wins out to ensure that it’s still a great game, but it leaves that nagging doubt; this could have been a masterpiece were it not for the fact that Polyphony was so absorbed with the detail that it took its eye off the ball.

this nerds post on the ign forum sounds pretty reasonable

I too am disappointed by this review. First, IMO all I have read from this article is how you guys (IGN) weren't pleased with the overall interface. Whether it be menus, options, online community, etc. All very legitimate points in their own right, but I feel too much was put on these aspects. I do understand that in this day and age of gaming alot is put on these areas and offering great polish on top of a game, but this is a simulator. Gran Turismo has never been about making the menu experiences or online setups all snazzy and what not. Should they? Yea, of course why not. But, should I weigh my review on these aspects if we are talking about driving? There was not enough informative information about the driving. At first, you pointed out that Gran Turismo's strength was in its braking. As opposed to Forza being its handling and Shift being its sense of velocity (speed) at redline. But, then towards the end of your review it switches to Gran Turismo's biggest highlight being its handling. This review is all over the place. From what I can tell you guys like how in FOrza you can pretty much customize everything and how in Shift the exaggerrated sense of speed raises the adrenaline. But, you applied these thoughts to a review for a Driving Simulator? Even if they are considered "side aomments" the mere mention of them says what your thinking or feel inregards to other games in comparison. After that the whole review went towards how beautiful at times the game is, how the menus are designed well (really only for visual flair and maybe ease of operation), the way your progress through the game is grinding with little fanfare (i.e. programmed celelbrations, cutscenes, confetti..), lack of cockpit views across the board, limited body customization, but first and foremost this game focuses on recreating a real-life driving experience. Those adding elements can be found in Need for Speed:Hot Pursuit, but then why wouldn't I just buy Need for Speed if thats my focus? This game is too deep for the article to be 3 pages of complaints sprinkled with love. Where is talks about the different parameters you canset for each car, suspension calibration, engine tuning, weight distribution, weight reduction, shock dampening, gear ratios, should I continue????

In 3 pages not one of those things were discussed, neither was the overall driving experience. It was, "Gran Turismo's braking is amazing." Wait, "Gran Turismo's handling is what saves this game." Wait. "The damage model is only mediocore." Wait. :But, the cars look so beautiful." Wait. Basically, nothing real solid was spoken on. I can assure you I can write a better article than that (even if there's major grammar errors within this comment, its a comment afterall not an Acceptance Speech..lol). Anyways, most people's problem with your review is the hype surrounding it. You guys went on for days like, "Oh its coming.. midnight. We are still playing it right now.. just wait till you see thses movies.
i for 1 am glad people cant rice out the cars with retarded body kits and wings. this game is already too riced out with the jdm dominant car list.

maybe the USA reviewer will make more sense than the UK guy. the video review does say that the handling in GT5 and physics is far ahead any other racing game. which seems like he docked too many points for less important things. or that hes a fanboy of other games and didnt want to give GT5 a great rating.

not much they go by level and price range, it says the used car lot is always changing but there was like three level 0 cars that were in the 20g price range, a late 80s honda, late 80s toyota and the car i picked the 02 toyota MR-s...it won me the first couple races in the beginner series (old ass reliable sunday cup from the previous GTs) by 5 seconds+
