I agree with you about most of those protein folding diseases being mutations in that individual, but there's a lot of evidence for strong selection preasure for diversity in the structure of the affected protiens, which would mediate the afftects of the prions doing the folding in that the couldnt fold all isomers with equal fidelity and so would be poorer at fucking shit up, no?
