Hard Times
You lost everything on that HD including windows, if it was a harddrive failure. You just need to put a compatible HD in and reinstall windows. However I haven't done that since the days of the boot up floppy discs so I'm not sure how to do it. If its something else like the harddrive controller on the motherboard failing it'll be more extensive. Unless its a newer laptop I'd just get a new one.

I took out the hard drive and ordered a new one. But it looks like windows 8 that comes on dell computers doesn't come with a back up? So a lot of people were saying they had to re buy a license? It seems insane but that's what I read on the dell boards. It's less than 2 years old. Got it early 2013. But it was cheap. Like $300. Should I just buy a new $200-300 laptop? I feel like I've already wasted more time than I'd like. Thanks butcher

Opening mine was surprisingly easy
Its surprisingly easy but its like taking apart a car door to replace a window motor, there's all these annoying clips and tiny connections that can break and be hard to fit together.

You can rebuy a license for $10 I believe, there's a way I know you used to be able and call and get a new key but I'm not sure how its done now. If its 2-3 years old that's like 4-5 years old vs a desktop. If you can afford it I'd just get a new one cause it'll be a way better computer

Lol @ trying to call someone a dolt when you bought an apple laptop
I have used PC's for over 15 years, and in 2012 switched, and still have a pc laptop (which I never use), just incase I would need it. I have an informed opinion, I don't blindly say I like osx better - its my preference.

I bought my macbook for 600$ on CL, and have yet to replace anything because it broke... only upgrades, and it is still as fast as the day got it.

All my PC's I have had to change HD, Keyboards, Wifi Cards.... ect, and way slower then first day bought.

I have run cpu intensive Ableton audio sessions on Mac and PC... PC clips, and crashes. Mac runs it smooth.

I put together a pc in 2005 for $500 that lasted until 2012 lol it ran a beta build of windows xp and had 0 updates. Zero probs except a HD failure when the power surged and I just recycled it finally when the power supply finally burned out
