Its funny you started this topic because I am reading Fast Food Nation right now. The thing that got my attention in the book is how companies now use Mcdonalds method of expanding, even non-food places like The Gap. It is Americas way of conquering the globe financially, basically modern day imperialism. Ive always knocked Wal Mart for the effect they have on the economy, how they run small companies out of business, but indirectly Mcdonalds does the same thing. Small potato farmers and ranchers are basically run out of business by the larger companies that Mcdonads buys from.
As far as food goes, I think the way meat packing companys are run is disgusting. I think its bullshit how the government lets them get away with so much. The speed that workers have to process a cow is so fast that they dont have time to do a safe job and its inevitable that the meat will get tainted. I also think the way cows are treated and slaughtered is animal cruelty.
I do occasionally eat fast food even after reading most of the book. It is a convenience factor for me. I live alone so a lot of the time I dont feel like cooking dinner for myself, and eating in restaurants can get expensive. I try to eat at independent places as much as possible. I think consumers need to take more responsibilty in where we spend our money and I do try and make the right decisions, ie. I dont shop at Wal Mart.
I would like to give up eating meat altogether one day. I especially have a problem with eating chicken. I feel that eating chicken is a big waste of a life. Like if you eat 20 hot wings, thats 5 chickens that gave thier life. At least one cow can feed a lot of people so its not as big of a waste of life. We need to respect where our food comes from, these are living creatures that are raised with the sole purpose of giving thier life for us...
