I like that old black N white look when the background is all blurry N the subject is clear. What do you call that setting???
You can set it to shoot black n white or edit it to be black n white after you're done. The blurry background and the subject is clear is called shallow depth of field.

It's not as hard as it seems, I been there before. Everything you need is online. I took a class and read up on books, some of the stuff i already knew before the class though.

try these settings 4 night shots.

Aperture to F/9 or around there.
Shutter speed 5 seconds and up, play with those two the most.. aperture and shutter speed. Then set the dial to M for Manual, otherwise if u leave it on Aperture or Shutter you'll just get a dark ass picture that u cant see anything.

If you have a nikon P is for programmed, S for shutter speed A for Aperture and M for Manual.. you wanna eventually learn to shoot on M, because if you shoot from Aperture the camera will select everything else for you but aperture, or if you shoot on S camera will select aperture and everything else for you but shutter since you're on that setting and have selected the shutter speed u want, but on manual you control everything how the picture will come out.

Yeah forgot 2 mention the tripod. I said f/9 because of the 5" seconds.

But of course the longer the shutter is open for the smaller the Aperture can be.

I have mine set at 200 ISO 90% of the time.

Yup you also need a fast telephoto lense (50mm+) that can go up to atleast f/4 ....you can get a f2.8 but them pieces of glass cost bread

Not necessarily, you can still achieve the depth of field with a zoom lens (which is what the 18-55 is) I have that lens and have taken pictures like that, you just need to choose matrix metering in the camera, and use one of the 3 points and focus on the subject by pressing the shutter release button half way, and once u get a good focus press it down all the way 2 take the picture.

Yup you can take some with your basic lense just make sure its zoomed because wide angle wont really get the look you want...but if you get a nice telephoto you can get that effect like this...

Everyone on craigslist I tried to get a cammera from flaked on me so I went to Ebay.

This is what I ended up getting:

Sony A100 DSLR Body
Sony Lens 3.5-5.6/18-70mm
Sony Lens 75-300mm f/4.5-5.6 Zoom Lens
Sony Battery Charger
3 Batteries
Compact Flash Memory Card 2GB
Tamrac Camera Case
All necessary cables to hook up to TV Set (not shown in photo)
Magic Lantern Guide for the Sony A100 DSLR

$415 (includes shipping) More than I intended to pay initially, but still less than if I got a new one in the store.

My luck everyone will say this is the worst deal. But I used the links provided by Mr. Nice Guy in this thread to investigate the higher rated camera and what qualities it had and when considering the lenses that came with it I thought this was a good price.
