We discussed this issue last semester in African American History class. If you are going to grow dreadlocks atleast understand the orgin of them and why people used to wear them...

Dreadlocks originate from the Mau-Mau Revolt in Kenya. Mau-Mau leaders wore dreadlocks. Rastafari emulated the Mau-Mau both in their appearance and their resistance to British colonialism. Rastafari regard the locks as both a sign of their African identity and a religious vow of their separation from the wider society.
They actually devoted a lesson to a hairdoo? What has college curriculum come to?

dreads have several underlining meanings:
1) One dread is stronger than a single strand, meaning streangth and togetherness.
2) Along with the growing of a beard or gotee, it is a lions maine ment to resemble the lion of judah as seen on the rasta flag.
3) and for christian africans, they resemble the story of samson, whos strength came from his locks.

And i do not believe that rastas are offended by the term "dreadlock' hence the song "natty dread" by some guy named robert nesta marley, perhaps youve heard of him. the term came from europeans reaction to the africans hair, saying that they looked "dreadful' im sure that over time rastas, jamaicans, and africans all over the world adopted the term.

And dont get it twisted all black people are africans, read about marcus garvey. Know who you are.

This a good post. Real good questions. Alot of them cats that do sprt dreads have no idea about Rastafarian culture/religion/way of life. Alot are just followers latching on to the latest fad. It goes much deeper than just a fad tho. You can trace the Rastas back to Ethiopia with Haile Selassie. Even the part they played with the Black Star Liner and Marcus Garvey. I think alot of these young cats have just exploited the dreads cause its the cool thing now. I remember 10 years ago, if someone had dreads they would stick out like a muthafucca. These rappers create the trends, I'm waiting for *insert rapper name hear* to fuckin do some stupid shit like walk around with a jar of Jiffy Peanut butter dippin a garpe blow pop in it. All he would need to do was do it on a video, rap about in a song, and you will then be able to go into a mall and see some lil muthafuccas doing the same shit.....comedy
