Like Bullet and Mr. D-Sane said, I think that the Northwest hip-hop community is still small and fragile to be messing with beef. There's no point in dealing with petty issues like this. Forget about writing a diss, make a hot song.
Yeah, (1) Dissing is healthy for the most part, and (2) Dissing gets publicity. But think about it, we're in the Northwest.
(1) Who are we to be talking shit to our neighbors on wax? That shows how much we have to say to the world as a unified front. Now that everyone and they momma is dissing each other in the rap industry, that means we have to jump on the bandwagon? Because they say it's healthy? Not really. Yes, competition is good for all of us, it brings out the best of us, keeps us on our toes. But if you look at everything, the industry is starting to look a little shady. Just take the Eminem/Aftermath battle versus Murder Inc. Aftermath is under Interscope and Interscope is under Universal/Vivendi. Murder Inc. is under Def Jam, which is part of Island Music Group. Island Music Groups is under Universal. These motherfuckers are generating publicity for the same head honcho, Universal/Vivendi, but I'm not saying that is exactly the case that the HCIC's at Universal are fabricating these beefs and making them cook up. Yeah, they could say it's street beef, but shit, they keep it on wax, it sells records, and Universal/Vivendi is the one that benefits from it all! I'm not saying that these beefs are not real, I'm not 50 Cent, Eminem, Ja-Rule or whoever, but when you look at it from a corporate standpoint, that's how it breaks down. So since the revival of disses, it leads me to think about the real motive behind this comeback trend. Is it actually for the benefit of hip-hop? Or is it for the green? Yes, we're in the Northwest, we don't have corporate structures as intricate as those created by the Big 4, so there IS a possibility of us doing it for the sake of bringing out the best of us, make this scene healthier and whatnot. However, this brings me to point two:
(2) Getting publicity. As mentioned before, many people in this thread also say it's for the sake of getting free advertisement with the masses. If the only way we can get publicity with the world - let alone in our own vicinity - is by making disses to one another, what does that mean? We don't have enough businessmindedness to get this promotional game cracked. Chances are, when the beefs are said and done, the fanbases of the parties involved will not have gone up or down significantly. Having said that, what IS the point of using this dissing thing as a promotional tactic? ***Before you read on, understand I LIVE IN THE NORTHWEST, and I love all my northwest people. *** But we're in a smaaaaaaaall-ass market in the Northwest. How much more can we squeeze out of it until the well is dry? Don't look at herring when you can be looking at snatching the salmon. However, if all you wanna be is just a neighborhood superstar, by all means, keep doing what you are doing. I don't wanna knock anybody for doing what they want to do, but shit, let's get this paper.
I liked how Cool Nutz had used sarcasm in replying to a recent post about dissing. Didn't seem like he cared, he was down to help out no matter what. Though I don't know if that was his real intention or if he was mocking dude (correct me if I'm wrong, sir) that's what we got to do. Approach all situations in a straight manner. That also means if someone needs help, ASK, don't be all up in others' face talking that smack. If you're denied the help, look elsewhere.
So if I am asked for my opinion, I'd say, "No, it's not helping the NW music scene."
Keep your mind set on this common goal of ours to get this money. This IS the music business. If you're not in it for the money................well, give what you got from it to me.
