After living in Germany for the last 5 months I definately appreciate America a whole lot more, German's pay 40% taxes on their pay, 19% sales tax at stores, 500 euro a year tax just to own a television, 6 euro a gallon for gasoline(which equals about 10 dollars) and their government is like 10 times more corrupt then anything i've ever seen in the US in how they treat their people....its funny cause I actually dislike our own government in the US a whole lot less since i've lived here.

Before I came here I'd say I just liked America, but now my "love" for it is a whole lot stronger.

to me, i'v ethought of it that way, but i guess you never know what you got til its gone. but is till don't think comparing severity to realize that we are "better" is very valid.

I think all societies are below what should be achieved.

How so?

The government of any country practically determines the standard of living for that population but i say admiration of where you live and what you identify with goes beyond that. And for many people, the government doesn't mean much more than the consequences for breaking the law and the price of gas and food.

This country is just land. I enjoy some of the people in this country. I dont really like the Government...but any place you go the gov sucks. I enjoy hanging out with people from other countries but then kickin it with my american friends. America is a decent place to live, even if it was "built on Slavery" (Who cares about this shit anymore, anyone here born that long ago...if not save it). Iam thankful I dont have to worry about tanks, bombs, lack of clean water...etc. Some countries are worse.

I say that cuz they're two different questions. We all grew up here around our friends and family and we have a culture and obviously the majority of us like the same music and artwork and movies and stuff. Its all part of "America". We all love that part of America (as far as I can tell). I doubt any of us would say "damn, I hate this country, our friends and family and music suck, and fuck football." But I'm sure a whole lot of us would say "fuck George Bush, fuck capitalism, fuck partisanship," etc.

yes, i really like how its more of a multicultural motherland than one race or culture..

unfortunately many people do not like to embrace this and still try to seperate themselves or force others to assimilate.

i do appreciate that i can live next door to a muslim family, and across the street from a buddhist family and diagonal to a hindu family and then talk to a person who practices wicca everyday at work..

its really quite beautiful, unless you got the mindset that one way is the 'only' way.

Somebody said they respect what America was built on. i pointed out a few of the things it was built on and asked if thats what he was proud of. This thread is about "your" country. In my case "your country" means America, not Rome, not the middle East, not Sicily or any other fuckin place. You following me? Now, slavery in America by and large IS a black/white thing. Me knowing that does not mean I'm whining. I can't help the fact that some of you dont like what you see when you look in the fuckin mirror. I love this country, and the ideals which it was founded on. Although people have forgotten what that means exactly and have forgotten what the duty of our government is, let me remind you that true patriotism and love for this country does not mean supporting the current administration or the currently corrupted and depraved system.

I believe Jefferson and Franklin had the best attitude towards what relationship a government should have with it's people. And that the duty of government is to ultimately serve the people and protect their rights. I believe our government has strayed from and forgotten what the ultimate duty is, and I believe people have abused powers and depraved the system with special interests and personal greed. There are many politicians who have used the government to serve their own personal interests rather than served the people. And I believe the very people of this country have let go of the high expectations of government as a dutiful servant to the people.

And if anyone wants to know exactly what I'm talking about and what ideals our government was founded on it is this...

"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. — That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed"

I personally despise majority of today's politicians and today's corporate America, and people who have depraved our great nation for personal interests. My political views could be labeled as "leftist" and "liberal" even though I ultimately wish to conserve what this nation was founded on (how ironic). I am cynical of politicians, I view government as an entity employed by the people, I am a true patriot... and most people have forgotten what that means.

And all along, it's not the only reason to dislike the country. I love my country, my grandfather and uncles fought for it, came home and raised families in the face of racism. With what? Some shit called hard work.

All for what? So I could come along a few generations later, and make the best of my opportunities - go to school, earn some money, hit some vacation spots hard, come back and start a family of my own.
