The fact that fresh said "I don't even got to add no drums" (talking about the kick and clap) is ridiculous. From what I heard, everyone could do what he did in less steps and make it sound better: Slow down the sample in any program (preferably one with a great pitch algorithm) with a couple clicks, import it in your DAW, stutter it a few times by either slicing and pasting or looping, and add some hi hats. That could be done in under 2 minutes.

The part with him trying to play over the sample is even funnier.

i feel what your sayin but to a lot of people here you just spoke a language they never heard of hahahaha thats the part you need to understand.look at dr dre "g thang" song he really didnt do nothing to that beat but its one of the best beats dr dre made!

people that buy or just listen to music dont care how its made wile on the other hand a bunch of producers be like "his hi hats are distorted"."his kicks dont match the snare",the synth is out of key".some things just cant be explained to the average listener.if they like it...they like it.

IT'S FUNNY WHAT BIG CHILL SAID KINDA TRUE SOME PRODUCERS GET AWAY WITH THE BASIC'S WELL SOME GET HATED ON WHEN THEY ARE MORE THEN BASIC.EITHER OR WILL WORK A BASIC BEAT OR A MORE COMPLEX BEAT DEPENDS ON THE PERSON'S AND WHAT THEY LIKE,MASTERMINDE-LOW IS NOT THE BEST BUT HE GOT SOME HEAT!
THERE IS A DIFFERENCE FROM SAMPLING AND LOOPING BOTH WORK.

yea good point sick wid it said the same thing the average joe dont give a shit about the patches, arrangement, percussion etc, how you put the share here and tamborine there, or how you use the sample, or if they even know IF there is a sample, they look at it more as a bigger picture. however what if some young buck wants to get his feet wet in making tracks and he looks on youtube and he finds this video or other videos like it where you got someone taking a sample, maybe taking some loops, some chops slices, throwing a drumkit on it and taking about how hes dropping knowledge, shit even myself even though I started with a roland mc-505 around 10 years ago, now im working with the fantom and 8800, when i look something up, i dont want to be misled like im about to learn something, theres too much empty content out there that I got to sort through just to find the jewels out there of who is really digging deep, instead of showing me their cubase, pro tools, sonar rig and rearranging a sample without really showing me anything.

put it like this, i mean we all saw this video once right, are we all gonna put this in our favorites and watch the video a second time for some knowledge later on? not me

I'm sure all you idiots on here dissing sampling make those typical bay area trash ass rave synth beats with those corny synthetic "dark" strings all over it. Sampling IS hiphop. You wonder why Bay rap is trash? Because wack niggas like you all hate sampling. Don't nobody out here make beats like Just Blaze or Justice league who blow all you fake ass "Composers" out the water. You think just because you don't sample you're some sort of Motzart? Naw you just make corny ass synth wack trash beats that only a hand full of idiots even like. Wack ass trendy triton beats.

Well, the cool thing about Dj Fresh is that he samples and throws synths over them.... if any of you guys even noticed........but he still does it with that nice Jazzy, Funky, Old School Hip-Hop Sound. Nothing wrong with that cuz thats what makes dj Fresh's Beats so DOPE!!!!

I dont think fresh is tryna compete This Is Not A Competition. If It Was Im Sure Fresh Would Do The Competitin Shit He Was 3rd Best DJ In The Usa In 99 so he has the competitive in him. Like For Example Charlie Parker And Dizzy Gilepse Were looked upon as better skilled players but as a whole people loved Miles Davis and Louis Armstrong because they just did what they felt sounded good. i think Fresh makes music for people not producers

doc sit down with your signature bi-polar post no one is dissing sampling, the people who have their hand in making music as a hobby know that this video isnt really showing anything that we dont already know, even though the person in the video is trying to portray like they are giving away their secrets or something. ive been learning to play the bass and guitar to add some variation to my tracks/samples, i dont try and front like im a professional, no doubt im an amateur that does this as a hobby, however sincerely whenever i sit down at the keys, or the pads i make what comes from the heart not some shit I hear on the radio.

shit one of my favorite composers is Khayree who is synonymous with bay rap and I dont recollect him using much samples, unless it was his own YBB shit like a mac dre or mall vocal sample, movie or something, so I dont see your correlation between the success of the bay and sampling

shit all about my fetti off the new jersey drive soundtrack was what, organ, pianos, guitar and a sick drumkit

Don't nobody out here make beats like Just Blaze or Justice league who blow all you fake ass "Composers" out the water.
Just Blaze AT LEAST adds a new drum pattern when he samples and when Justice League samples they really make it their own with their arrangement, chopping the sample, and by playing live instruments over the sample.

fresh has a fan base for a reason. we LOVE that sound. and yes the sound is stealing funk/ freestyle/ old school songz.......
so who creates the sound you LOVE - fresh or the original creators of the sample? Maybe it depends?

How far you take a sample determines how much respect a rap producer should deserve. Simply slowing down a sample and looping it and adding a few sounds doesn't take any talent, it could literally be taught to a 5th grader in a half an hour.

Taking a sample, chopping it up in an interesting way that is significantly more different than the original sample and adding your own drums deserves more respect than the first example, that actually requires some talent. Extra points if the original sample can't be rapped on i.e. there are no drums at all/ the genre of the sample isn't rap/pop/r&B and would be hard or awkward to rap on.

Taking a sample and turning it into something that is completely unrecognizable when compared to the original deserves the MOST respect (if the beat is tight of course). Making a sampled beat like this can deserves as much respect as a completely original composed beat because the producer ends up turning the sample INTO an instrument in and of itself.

So which category does Fresh fall into? People also need to keep in mind that it's DJ Fresh and THE WHOLE SHABANG.

Fresh doesn't do all the "beats", he has a team of ghost "producers", so why does Fresh get all the credit?

First Of All It Aint No Ghost Producers In The Whole Shabang. Fresh always make sure we all get credit for beats everyone has a "tag".

WHY BOON DOC IS THE TRUTH!

i didnt see nothing special about the first video you posted...look at boon doc fingers wile he grooving with the beat in the first video...he was hitting the chopped samples in order they were sliced most of the time.so he wasnt doing nothing more then what dj fresh was doing.e-low was all over the mpc makin his own groove with the sliced samples.
