PLAY OR PASS?
So here is my review for DEAD SPACE 2 and I will update it again AFTER I've completed the final chapter. By doing this I can shed more light on the pacing, gameplay, story, etc. So let's get to it.
Story: The game picks up three years after Dead Space. You're on a spaceship/city called the sprawl and it has been invaded by the necromorphs. Due to spoilers, I will not go that much in the story, but will say that the first couple of chapters shed some light on what happened to Isacc and why he's on the ship. The story is good and so far I've run into a couple of plot twists. Again, I don't want to spoil the story for any of you so take my word for it, the story is good and "ALTMAN BE PRAISED!"
Graphics: The graphics are a step up from Dead Space. If you played the original, you would know that it has some of the best looking graphics, enemy design, weapon design, etc. The graphics also help create the mood of dread and despair. You'll see blood on the ground, on the walls, messages written on the wall, on the floor, etc. Lighting played an important role in the original but in this one it plays an even bigger role because at certain points things will be totally dark and you'll need to use your weapon to provide you with some light. The locations are different this time around. On the previous game you were on a ship and, while some of the locations were different, things didn't change too much. However, in this game the locations vary so much and it actually feels like you're in a city. A subway train, a shopping center, a church, etc etc etc, the Sprawl is varied and the art design and direction is on point. Also, Isacc's suits look even better this time around and the original weapons look new even though they operate the same.
Sound: This is one of the best sounding games out right now and sound is used to enhance the gameplay and lead to those "oh shit!!!" moments. You'll hear voices coming out of nowhere, you'll hear voices of people who've locked themselves in their rooms, and you'll hear necromorphs. Pay attention to what you hear as you'll hear some tripped out shit that actually ties into the storyline (and I'm not talking about audio logs.) The sound track is on point and some of the songs are really memorable. One of the most demented and crazy sounding sound beds is the one you'll hear when you get to the toy store section where the children necromorphs first pop up. That shit sounds CRAZY as fuck! Now there is one BIG thing that seperates DS2 from DS when it comes to sound and that is the voice of Isacc. He talks a lot this time around (and fuck and motherfucker seems to be his favorite words) and this enhances the story so much more than the original.
Gameplay: Streamlined. Better. In. Every. Way. For starters, I never played the DS2 demo, but I was surprised at how fast Isacc moves in this game. He moves faster, his stomps come out quicker, his melee has a better detection and it's just responsive in every way. The shooting has changed a bit as you reload with one of the face buttons (I'm playing on PS3 so it's the square button.) In addition to that, when you press the DPAD to change your weapons, you also see your total ammo count for each weapon so there is no need to press the button to bring up your entire inventory to see what you have. You can also heal yourself and recharge your statis with face buttons as well (circle and triangle) if you have health and stasis packs in the inventory. Also, picking up things with kinesis and shooting them is so much easier in DS2. In DS it was so cumbersome that it would often hamper the gameplay a bit, but this time around it is way easier to pick things up (like necromorph limbs) and shoot.
The weapons feel pretty good and pack a lot of punch. But the aiming in DS2 seems a bit different from the first. It's like center aiming, and the dots/site/reticule is a bit smaller. It takes a couple of minutes to get used to it but once you do you're good. My suggestion is to try out all the weapons and go with your favorites, but some weapons are useful against certain enemies while weak against others. I downloaded the rivet gun and it's very useful for necrokids (I guess that is what they are called), regular necromorphs and the ones that have those big bomb like things attached to their arms. You can upgrade your weapons and rig as before but this time you can reallocate the nodes (you have to reach a certain point in the game to do this.) There are zero-g sections in the game and they control better this time around. You don't have to aim and shoot to get to certain spots in zero-g as it is free roaming. All you have to do is press the L3 button and you're in the air.
This time around enemies drop less loot but you can stomp them to get even more loot. Stomping will be vital if you want to progress on the harder difficulties and speaking of difficulties, there are like four straight out the gates and I'm playing on "Zealot" which is the hardest one until you beat the game. The store is the same as before in that you can purchase, sell or store your items and weapons.
There are some good set pieces in the game (the subway/train one comes to mind) and there will NEVER be a moment in this game where you will feel you're safe. In addition to that, I can't say I've encountered a dull moment yet. Another thing that seperates this from the previous game is how the game progresses. This game, like the one before it, is divided into chapters, but only this time there are no long loading screens telling you that you completed it, no train rides, etc. You simply move on to the next level and it will tell you because some text will pop up on screen, thats about it.
You encounter a lot of the same enemies from DS and this one tosses a few more at you like the necrokids and a new kind of flying necromorph (first boss.) The boss fights are on point and each has their own weaknesses. The enemy A.I. is on point as the necromorphs will hunt you down and kill you. So if you think they're going to just sit there and take rounds you're insane. Running away can be good at times (if you are low on ammo) but other times you will have to fight. I will say this, on zealot mode, stasis is VITAL so I suggest if you're playing it on zealot that you max out your rig and stasis states asap. You will contstantly fight, and you will constantly die, but dying allows you to see all the gruesome death scenes so it's worth it. Also, the reload times after you die are a bit shorter so you're never out of action for too long.
As for the length of the game, I'll check my time later and see where I'm at, but I'm playing on zealot and know that on the harder difficulty levels you're going to need more than 10 hours to beat it. This campaign is lengthy and from what I've heard (but can't confirm because I've yet to beat it) that you can play a +game with all your items, suits, weapons, etc and do so on a higher difficulty. I think that's good because from what I've heard from a friend who has beaten it, the mode that is unlocked only allows you to save the game like 3 times, so you have to be on point to play and beat that one.
Multiplayer: I played the multiplayer online for a couple of hours the other night just to get a feel of it. The MP doesn't do it for me and this has nothing to do with the fact that I don't like MP. It's ok, it's not glitchy and I had no problem hosting matches, finding matches, etc but the objectives on each map make things a bit difficult and the fact you swap from humans to necro after each round messes up the flow. You can unlock weapons, suits and I think other necromorphs but the balance seems to be a bit off. Humans can do everything they can in the main campaign, but necros only have like 1-3 moves. However, they can spawn in the best of places so you have to watch out for them. So try it out, but I don't see this being the next big thing when it comes to MP. IMHO, the time and resources that went into MP should have been used for the campaign. Don't get me wrong, it doesn't feel tacked on, but like I said, I don't see this being some great MP takeover. Play this for the campaign, do multiple runs for the campaign, and play MP if you want to take a break from your usual MP games.
In closing, this game is on point and I give it a PLAY. Remember, I'm a gamer just like you all, have no connection with any of these companies, don't get paid by them etc. Times are hard for a lot of people, so I don't recommend that people buy, I simply suggest that they play the game or pass on it. I however purchased the game and I did it for the PS3 because it comes with the HD version of DEAD SPACE: EXTRACTION which is an on rails shooter (think TIME CRISIS) that is pretty fun also. So basically I got two good games for the price of one. You can't beat that. Also, I feel sorry for 360 users as the game comes on 2 discs for the 360 but only one disc (blu-ray) for the PS3. So buy the game, rent it, steal it from your homies brother, borrow it from the guy next door but most of all, PLAY IT.
:H:
PS EXCUSE ALL TYPOS AND I WILL UPDATE THIS AFTER I BEAT IT.
