yeah mine took a shit after a year it couldnt read a disc just kept spinning but didnt play
yeah the factory hard drives are shitty as hell and dont last long. you gotta upgrade your hard drive to a name brand one and it will last. thats how they get you. i had that issue in begining of 2009 and replaced the hard drive and havent had no issues since then.

Also, when you replaced the HD, do you have to do anything first, like reformat it etc?

just the data from disc games will be lost. but your PS store purcahses will be there forever on your psn acccount. all you gotta do is sign in and re download everything from your account that you got from the store. your trophies will still be there too. only thing you wont have anymore is music, videos you put on your ps3 and disc played games you saved on the old drive unless u backed them up(i still dont know how to back stuff up on it). i remember having that issue it broke my heart bc that was around the time grand theft auto iv first came out and i had it completely beat along with several other games and totally lost everything after my hard drive burned out.

yeah that one is perfect i have the same one mine just older model i had mine installed since 2008 and havent had any issues out of it since then. ps3 will automatically recognize your new drive and tell you what to do. it will take like a hour or maybe 45 mins to install your new drive. you be good just have to play the games u havent completed all over again but atleast the trophies will still be there.

ps3 is def the shit but Sony's weak point is they put shitty factory hard drives in ps3 and will burn out from long game play, power outtage while its on or improper shutdown.
