TOKYO -- Fans of the Japanese pop group AKB48 found out the group's new singer was fake -- and not just her personality.
The group revealed that Eguchi Aimi was actually an digital amalgamation of other singers in the band.
Aimi was first spoke to the world in an introduction video in which she said, "Nice to meet you! I'm Aimi Eguchi, the new member of AKB48."
Rumors swirled among fans that Aimi wasn't all she was cracked up to be. And eventually, AKB48 revealed the publicity-seeking ruse in a video that demonstrated how the pop star was created using the eyes, mouth, nose and eyebrows of other women.
The group -- which holds the Guinness World Record for being the "pop group with the greatest number of members" -- said Aimi was created to promote candy for the company Glico.
The confectioner also released an online tool for fans to create their own pop star.
Such a sad day for Mr. Weebo
