That's debatable though. One of my closest boys (who happens to be black) makes about $6/hr more than I do. He's a college dropout, I have a college degree. His dad is an old school cat, who I've discussed this with before...and his response was "my people need to stop makin' excuses for their failures and shortcomings." That's what he said word for word. So, it depends on who you ask, also.

Then there are my amigos who make $16-$18/hr. with just a GED...more than most of my white folks make.

It's not so much about race as it is about location and profession. Don't get me wrong, it might be in some areas...but where I'm from it's almost the opposite. The younger generation might be changing that soon though....'cause there are a bunch of damn ignorant assholes out here these days....of ALL backgrounds.

your friends dad is 100 percent correct, and i'm not doubting your stories based on experiences yyou've had with individuals and specific scenarios, but like I replied back to Slapmaster a few posts back, "not making excuses" is great motivational talk for getting an individual off their butt, but it's not necessarily a good explanation of the problem (or what some conservatives on tv think is a lack of a problem). it's a good solution but not an explanation. The scales are obviously not as poorly balanced as lets say 40 years ago but there is still enough disparity to bring about white priv. kudos to your friends father, it's attitudes like his that help not just people with his skin tone but society as a whole, but the fact that he's in the situation to have to drop quotes like that is proof of a huge problem.

i'm not black or white, but based on what i've seen and learned in my life, you can say i've taken up some "causes" like the plight of ethnic minorities most specifically african americans and native americans. i'm not doubting the self destructive qualities of blacks, mexicans or any other group. shit strictly by strength in numbers (not proportion), there are still more poor white people in this country then there are poor blacks or latinos. you can't get shit done without self initiative, ultimately people will have to cure their own wills, but it's not easy. it's very difficult with some of the factors that are impeding progress.

I'm with you on that, breh. In the end, those who really want it will get it. I know I kinda strayed away from the point for a second, but it seemed important enough to mention. Some may have to work harder, some may not...for whatever reason.

I'm glad I live in a city where people of all backgrounds make money...and I do not doubt white privilege, but to a certain extent. I think much of the privilege is with those who "belong". Anybody outside of these circles gets nowhere unless they are just plain lucky.

A lot of our problems these days are class related...and my guess is because the elite, wealthiest of wealthy white folks, probably had no leg to stand on in terms of race because so many people band together these days. Now we ALL make these wealthy people even wealthier...we all run their companies...and we all struggle. Location has a lot to do with who gets what. My boy makes good money in San Jose, but he might be on the bottom of the ladder in a place like Oklahoma or Louisiana because race is still a huge factor out there.
