Firearm used in fatal Bayview shooting recovered, San Francisco police say

Police announced Thursday that they have recovered a .380-caliber pistol belonging to 19-year-old Kenneth Harding Jr., of Seattle, the man fatally shot while fleeing from officers in the Bayview on July 16.

Police said in a statement that a neighbor led officers from Bayview station to an AMT .380-caliber semi-automatic pistol. The gun was later confirmed by the Police Department’s crime lab to be the same gun that fired the fatal .380-caliber bullet into Harding’s neck, police said.

The bullet was recovered from Harding’s head in an autopsy, and a similar .380-caliber bullet was found in Harding’s jacket, leading police to speculate that Harding accidentally shot himself while fleeing from officers.

Police have said Harding ran from officers who were detaining him for evading a Muni fare at Third Street and Palou Avenue, and during the pursuit, fired at the officers, who returned fire.

Harding then dropped his gun, according to police, and collapsed nearby, where people began gathering, some of them angered by their belief that police had shot an unarmed man. Some onlookers recorded the scene with cellphones and later posted the video online.

“The small silver and black handgun, seen on the widely viewed cellphone video of the incident, was picked up from the crime scene by an individual during the chaotic aftermath of the shooting,” police said in a statement.

Police thanked the Bayview community for assisting in the investigation, which they said is ongoing.

The funny thing is, Monte, you keep claiming this man had no gun. BUT, the person who took the video with the gun in it laid it out for everybody who was watching. Couple steps forward, you see a gun...couple steps more...you see a cell phone. Everybody wants to ignore the fact that the person taking the video did not say "He's taking a gun right here" when he picked up the cell phone...the person said, "He later took the gun and disappeared."

The police did hit him with a bullet in the back of the calf while he was running and shooting at the cops with the 380 above his shoulder when the bullet hit the back of his calf he jerked and shot himself in the neck. End of of story dude was a piece of shit that deserved to get shot.

There was a white man in the bushes who shot him and threw the gun onto the cement. Then he videotaped it on a cell phone, pointed out the gun, and blamed another black man for picking it up and running away...when really the white dude picked it back up and went back to work at Google...which happens to be in cahoots with the SFPD, med. examiners office, SF General Hospital, and the media.

Ya'll really are looking at this in the wrong context. The real victim is the neighborhood. What was the thought process of the police when returning fire? Would they had done the same thing at Market and Powell? The police have a history of not respecting residents in HP. Criminal, civilian, old lady, etc. They treat people in the hood like shit, go on high speed chases in places populated by childeren in the summer, and they like to shoot at people in broad daylight on a croweded street. That's how they roll, and that's fucked up. How many shots did they let off? How many hit the dude, 1? Right in front of a rec center?

Police are also trained for these type of scenarios.
What would u do if someone was bustin at u in broad daylight? Would you bust back?
Too much blame gettin placed on the police in this scenario when ol boy was the one who started the shit. I understand that this is a bigger issue, but for this particular case the police were not wrong.

You know what disgusts me? Naive parents who think their children can do no wrong. This dude's mom thinks her children don't own weapons? How many of us have had shit in the house that our parents didn't know about? Not just weapons, but ANYTHING. She obviously wasn't paying attention...like the parents of those Columbine kids. Open your fuckin' eyes, talk to your kids, and know what's going on in their lives.

When he said, "You see the area code so you know where I'm at." That's probably because he thought the phones were tapped. If he had nothing to hide, he could have said, "I'm in San Francisco"...but he didn't. And I haven't read about or seen any cops saying he deserved to die. On top of that, does his mom think an ambulance falls from the sky when somebody gets shot? It's not like these cops didn't call the ambulance. If I got shot outside of my house, I could expect an ambulance to arrive in 15 minutes...I don't think he even waited that long.

U know what's sad is when a Man in Oakland is trying to feed the homeless and gets killed in a drive by shooting his poor little 3yr old girl got shot in the arm and his pregnant wife got it in the arm too.. Now that's some fucked up bullshit. I hope they catch those punks.

.To compare this to oscar grant is an atrocity. Look we have all been fucked with by the police. I don't what color you are, some police abuse their power. I have a buddy who could pass for chris angel mindfreaks twin. Lol tatted up, was riding around in a brand new infinity and he got pulled over by the cops on a regular.
Are there sum cases where cops abuse their power and kill someone when they didn't have to? Sure. However this wasn't the case. So save all the bullshit.
