Although he missed all of training camp and the first four regular-season games in a contract impasse, Michael Crabtree walked into a locker room full of players who welcomed him to the team Wednesday.
hey, more than anyone, realize that though they play a game, it's nevertheless still a business.
"That's the business side of things," running back Michael Robinson said. "It's not like he didn't want to be here."
Said tight end Vernon Davis: "It would have been nice to have him here at the beginning so he can learn. The good thing is he's here now. I'm just happy to have him here, excited for him to get in."
Wide receiver Josh Morgan went through the rookie thing last year and said it took him until the seventh game of 2008 before he felt comfortable in the offense. A similar time frame would take Crabtree well into November.
"I'm happy he finally signed," Morgan said. "I'm happy for him so he can get his NFL career started. Hopefully, he picks up the offense and does the same thing he did in college. All I can do is give him my experience of last year, my rookie year. I know the playbook inside and out, every position. I can really help him in that area."
A couple stalls over, taciturn Isaac Bruce was asked his reaction of the Crabtree signing, which dominated the news on Wednesday.
"I don't know if I have one," Bruce said.
Gore on mend: Running back Frank Gore, who injured his right ankle and foot early in the Minnesota game Sept. 27, is on track to return at Houston on Oct. 25, following the 49ers' bye week.
"I won't know until I get out there. Right now, I feel all right," Gore said. He said he will begin running this week to test the ankle.
