Jay Hernandez that Mexican cat in Friday Night Lights is gonna play Carlito.

That's right Jay Hernandez is coming up, P Diddy probably going to be in about 2 minutes once editing gets done, because he is going to funk it all up if he stays any longer. Anyone know any other actors in it?

Jay Hernandez in 'Carlito's Way' Prequel
September 24, 2004 10:05 EDT

Jay Hernandez will portray legendary Puerto Rican gangster Charlie "Carlito" Brigante in "Carlito's Way, The Beginning" the prequel to the 1993 Brian De Palma film that starred Al Pacino as Carlito.

Michael Bregman will direct from his own script next month in New York.

The story follows him through Spanish Harlem's no exit world of gangs, drugs, pimping and the Mob, from 1940s to the early 1970s.

Luis Guzman, from the original cast, will return and Burt Young, who was in Bregman's film "Table One" is also on board.

I second that.

Trying to build hype for your movie by saying P Diddy is going to be in it, but not mentioning any REAL actors is a bad sign (especially when the origonal movie had such a tight cast and great performances Sean Penn was the shit in that movie).

Also a bad sign, when they only talk about who's producing the movie and not mention a director, especially when someone as great as De Palma made the OG version.

Maybe it's too early to say all that, but i have a feeling this is just a way to try and cash in on the hip hop croud instead of trying to make another classic film.
Couldn't agree more...

A script review for the prequel to the 1993 Brian DePalma/Al Pacino thriller "Carlito's Way" has gone up at LatinoReview and gives further insight into the story:

"Jay Hernandez stars as the young Carlito Brigante, who from an early age is seduced by the power and excitement of the New York underworld. Assisted by his two "brothers" in crime, Rocco (Michael Kelly, Dawn of the Dead) and Earl (Mario Van Peebles, Ali), Carlito is on the fast-track to becoming Spanish Harlem's ultimate kingpin. But when he is challenged, Carlito has just one thing on his mind...survival.

I wanted to hate this script but I actually didn't. I ended up liking the script -- it's entertaining -- and I hope it makes an entertaining movie which I think it will. I will definitely go and see it on opening night to show my support for Hernandez and see how he pulls off playing Nuyrorican. What the script has going for it and what I like is that Carlito is a swaggering motherfu**ker".
