"Consumers are used to paying $60 each for videogames that run on consoles like the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Now the publisher behind the industry's biggest videogame franchise— "Call of Duty"—is about to find out whether it can get them to pay a monthly bill, too.

Activision Blizzard Inc. plans to launch an online service called Call of Duty Elite this fall that will work with the next major edition of the game, "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3," and future installments of the hyper-realistic combat-simulation game. In a move industry executives describe as a first, Activision plans to charge a monthly subscription fee for the service, which will provide extra content that isn't offered on game discs sold in stores, including downloadable map packs that give players new "Call of Duty" levels to play.

Activision executives said they haven't yet figured out how much to charge for the service, but they expect the cost to be less than fees for comparable online-entertainment services, such as a $7.99-a-month Netflix Inc. movie subscription. Portions of the service will be free, including features inspired by Facebook Inc. that will let "Call of Duty" players meet for online gun battles with others who share various affiliations and interests.

Another feature of the service will give "Call of Duty" players tools, modeled on those from stock-trading websites, to analyze their performance within the game, gauging factors such as which weapons have been most successful for them in killing enemies.

The plan—which comes a week ahead of the videogame industry's big E3 trade show in Los Angeles—is a potentially risky bet by Activision that it can further milk profits from consumers, who could feel the $60 they spend on "Call of Duty" in stores is enough. Charging a monthly subscription fee is more common for multiplayer games that run on personal computers. The most successful of those is "World of Warcraft," a fantasy game from Activision's Blizzard division that has over 11 million subscribers, who typically pay $15 a month for the service.

For players with a Microsoft Corp. Xbox 360 console, a Call of Duty Elite subscription will come on top of the $9.99 monthly fee they typically pay for Xbox Live, the online game service that provides players of all Xbox games to meet and compete against others online. Sony Corp.'s PlayStation 3 console owners don't pay a monthly fee to play against others online.
The PlayStation Network that provides those multiplayer capabilities recently suffered an outage of more than three weeks after a hacker intrusion on the service. Players of PC versions of "Call of Duty" don't pay to play others online.

In an interview, Activision Chief Executive Bobby Kotick said he isn't worried about pushback from gamers about the Call of Duty Elite fee because players will still be able to compete against each other online without subscribing to the service. While he is coy about many of the offerings that will be included in the service, Mr. Kotick said Call of Duty Elite, and the customer-service operation that will be needed to support it, wouldn't be possible if the service was free. "This is an enormous investment," he said.

"Call of Duty" is in a unique position to seek a monthly fee from customers. The game's previous installment, set during the Cold War and called "Call of Duty: Black Ops," was the best-selling game last year, with global retail sales of more than $1 billion during its first six weeks on shelves.
Since Activision first began publishing the series almost eight years ago, it has accounted for more than $3 billion in retail sales, according to the company. Unlike hit movies, new versions of "Call of Duty" come out every year, with "Modern Warfare 3" due to arrive in stores Nov. 8.
"It's probably the biggest entertainment franchise in the world," said Dennis Durkin, corporate vice president in Microsoft's interactive-entertainment business.

Just as important is the degree to which "Call of Duty" has become the biggest online-game hit on consoles. While many gamers still play the old-fashioned way—by themselves against enemies operated by the game itself—"Call of Duty" has been the most successful console game at getting players to battle other human-operated opponents over the Internet.
Jamie Berger, Activision's vice president of digital for "Call of Duty," said the company has about seven million daily players of the game who spend, on average, about seven full days a year playing the game against others online. Players often use headsets to communicate verbally with other online gamers.
Like other publishers, Activision has earned money selling "Call of Duty" map packs and other digital content for one-time charges, but subscriptions to its new service could give it a continuing way to capitalize on the online popularity of the game.

Rob Dyer, senior vice president of publisher relations at Sony's U.S. games division, said only a few games have the audience loyalty and size to support a subscription service like Call of Duty Elite. Mr. Dyer said he is "very confident" other publishers will follow Activision's lead. "There's money to be made there," he said. "

The multi player will be free as it has always been now they want to charge extra for map packs and a combat record but on a monthly basis if you chose to pay for it.

LMFAO at them saying its to expensive to do this for free when COD brings in BILLIONS of dollars every year, get the fuck out with that bullshit.
Wow so basically they wan't us to pay for shit that already come free with COD games? That is funny as fuck how they try to act like they couldn't do map packs for free because they already don't! Last time i checked map packs were $15 and i'm sure they make a killin on them!

Bobby Kockprick is such a faggot! They act like it's "optional" but i bet they gonna drop the game with like 3 maps to play on mp and then act like we can't see our K/D ratio's or game scores without paying extra for it!

This would be a day one midnight release for me but i think i'll hold off until i see how this plays out!

Dude gonna kill the COD franchise with his own greed cuz i and i'm sure many other ain't gonna pay shit more then i do right now to play COD!!

Same here. I was already debating whether or not I even wanna buy this game. I guess I'll wait until more details come out as to what exactly it is that gamers who pay for that Elite shit get versus gamers who don't.

Dan works for Activision as a social community person ( like 402 for IW ) and posted this just a little bit ago.

So now I am confused as to what the fuck is going on, guess we shall see tomorrow if they post more info, if not then I am sure they will have more at E3.

Activision is a terrible company that over-saturates the market with brands. They did it with the Guitar Hero series, and now you're going to see them bleed the COD until it's dry. I wonder how many people jump to Battlefield 3 during all of this. lol

Those not familiar with Battlefield. Here's a couple comparison video's between Black Ops and BC2, the last Battlefield game. I used to like the COD series, until they stopped supporting the servers and now we're stuck with tons of lag, a long with half-ass games they push out.

Elite = FREE

There will be certain features that you will have to pay for but it has not been announced yet what those features will be.

Side note I cant wait to see what BF3 has to offer on the MP side of things.

i have friends that swear by BF and then i have friends who swear by COD..both games have faults...BF wins for realism and i like the larger maps...but COD is funner to play its also more frustrating having people that you just killed spawn right around you and take you out....or getting killed and spawning right in the line of crossfire and dying again without a chance

elite to me sounds like another service offered for extras such as for tournaments...i wouldnt pay for it, sure some will

as long as they include a free MP on disc i'll be fine...if they dont, then i wont buy it

COD: Elite Officially Revealed

Activision have finally lifted the lid on their rumored subscription service for Call of Duty titled 'Elite'.

After weeks of rumors, Call of Duty: Elite has finally been announced, detailed and trailered! A while back it was announced that a newly-founded company called Beachhead would be working on a project that enhances the online experience. Today that project was officially unveiled to the world.

A beta will be launching this Summer and we've compiled all the details, screens and trailer here for you. Sign up to participate in the beta that kicks off in Summer on the just-launched official website » and view the press release ».

The press release confirms that it's developed from the ground up by Beachhead and offers "cutting-edge features that significantly enhance the franchises' multiplayer experience" as well as "a new level of social engagement that will unite more than 30 million players worldwide."

"The average Call of Duty player spends 58 minutes per day playing multiplayer. That is more than the average Facebook user spends per day on Facebook. And yet, right now, there are very few tools to unite and super charge that social community. Whether it's allowing you to connect with your friends, or people of a similar skill level, people who live in your city, people who share your favorite passions, join competitive clans or social groups, or upload, view and comment on the incredible mass of player-generated content, or watch and comment on exclusive created content, Call of Duty Elite will give people more ways to connect with fellow players than ever before. Elite will also allow players of every level to improve their game with an intuitive suite of tools, and compete in tournaments for both real and virtual prizes."

"Call of Duty Elite has been tailored for Call of Duty's diverse base of players — hardcore gamers, casual weekend warriors and even beginners — and additional features will be revealed when we premiere Modern Warfare 3 multiplayer later this summer. Over 7 million gamers play Call of Duty online each day logging hundreds of hours of multiplayer per player per year. Of course, the out of the box Call of Duty multiplayer experience that gamers have come to love and expect will continue as is. However, for those players looking for more, Call of Duty Elite will supercharge their experience." - Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision Publishing
Elite is said to include 'several industry-first innovations' and will offer two-way communication between the service and the game, meaning that the choices and decisions that players make in Elite will affect their in-game experience. The press release then states that it will be fully integrated into Modern Warfare 3 and will launch alongside the game on Tuesday 8th November, 2011.

There are three ways in which Elite's features and services will engage the community:

Connect: Elite will further connect players from all of the world. Players will be able to compete against friends, players of similar skill levels and players with similar interests, join groups, join clans, and play in organized tournaments. Players will also be able to track the performance, progress and activity of their entire network in the game as well as on mobile and web interfaces.

Compete: On the competitive side of things, players will have available a constant stream of events and competitions which are tiered to group them with those with similar abilities. In-game and real-world prizes will be rewarded to all skill levels.

Improve: Not so good at the game? Elite can help improve that, just like a personal online coach! Players can use a dynamic strategy guide that tracks statistics and performances down to the most minute details. You can also compare the statistics to friends or other gamers in the community. Tools are information are provided so that you can learn and up your game.
Elite will record a player's gameplay history in a cohesive career record that keeps track of every kill, every game and progress.

In case you thought that you'd have to pay for all that, think again. While there is an additional fee, the majority of features are FREE! If you want more, then you can purchase a premium membership that will include a wide range of state-of-the-art-services, exclusive entertainment programming and all-inclusive game content.

You'll be able to access Elite through web browsers, mobile devices, games consoles or the game interface. It will launch with Modern Warfare 3 in November but sign up now right here » to be in with a chance of playing the public beta on Call of Duty: Black Ops this summer.

Bare in mind that you will still get a full game whether you have Elite or not. Multiplayer is and always will be free to play! Elite is simply a new way of enhancing your experience if you want, rather than restricting users who don't sign up to it. It's optional and is perfect for those who love stats, tournaments, connecting with friends and much more.

Downloadble content such as map packs can be bought through the service if you're a premium member, but it's not known what the difference would be. Perhaps premium members can buy them at discounted prices or receive them early, but it is certain that those who don't have Eliite can receive DLC as normal. Not much details on the premium service are yet known.

Be sure to check out the trailer below for a more cinematic, detailed look at what Elite is. Who knows, you may even get a Modern Warfare 3 sneak peek at the end!

http://kotaku.com/5805959/the-modern-warfare-3-files-team-perks-no-nukes-new-killstreaks

These are from the same sources that leaked MW3 info to kotaku, which was confirmed as TRUE by Activision, so these are most likely true as well.

The Modern Warfare 3 Files: Team Perks, No Nukes, New Killstreaks

"It's a fair guess that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 will follow in the footsteps of last year's Call of Duty: Black Ops, shattering sales records and bringing even more people to video games.

But it's typically not the single player campaign, detailed here, that draws in those record-breaking numbers. While many, including myself, enjoy the Call of Duty campaigns, it's the multiplayer that has managed to shift the Call of Duty franchise from a video game to something more akin to a sport.

People play pick-up games of Black Ops, Modern Warfare 2, even Modern Warfare, like they play games of baseball, soccer or shoot some hoops. Like it or not, consider it innovative or rehashed gameplay, the Call of Duty franchise has in many ways transcended what it is to be a video game.

So here's your first, unofficial look at what we can expect from the bread and butter, the heart of Modern Warfare 3 when it hits this fall. Do keep in mind that while the details of the game's single player campaign, first reported by Kotaku via inside sources and later seemingly verified with the official release of a trailer and matching levels, are likely mostly locked in stone. What is delivered with multiplayer could easily shift. Multiplayer is often tweaked after the game hits. It also receives a number of downloadable content packs post launch. With the advent of Elite, that's even more likely.

That being said, here's what our inside sources are telling us we can expect from multiplayer.
The game's multiplayer will be divided into cooperative Special Ops maps and traditional multiplayer maps. There will be no zombie modes in this game, not a surprise since zombies were introduced to the Call of Duty franchise by Treyarch and have, so far, popped up only in the Treyarch-developed games.

Special Ops will include both a survival, horde-like mode and a mission mode, with a total of a dozen maps and missions to choose from between the two.

As we've previously reported, there are 20 maps being worked on for Modern Warfare 3's multiplayer.

It is unclear how many multiplayer and Spec Ops maps and missions will come with the game and how many will be sold at a later date as add-on downloadable content.

Key to the multiplayer experience is the ability for players to level up their characters and unlock perks to modify the effectiveness of their equipment, character and enemy equipment. The multiplayer matches also include killstreaks, which are special one-time rewards that are unlocked after a player kills other players a set number of times without dying.

As could be expected, developers Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer Games have been working to tweak both killstreaks and perks for Modern Warfare 3.

The biggest new addition to the game that we've heard of so far is the creation of Team Perks. These are perks that a team can work toward to earn. It is unclear whether this will be tied to clans or some other team system, but their inclusion could help push the game into a more team-driven title, something the premium Elite service is likely to tie into.

While we don't know the total number of team perks coming to Modern Warfare 3, we have been told four of them:

Stopping Power: Increased bullet damage.
Blast Shield: Unclear
Health Regen: Regenerate health over time.
Stun Protection: Prevent stunning from flash grenades.

New perks coming to Modern Warfare 3 include:

Blind Eye: This makes you immune to computer-controlled and player-controlled killstreaks. The pro version makes your launchers lock on faster and gives you extra bullet damage to vehicles.
Assassin: This makes you immune to UAV, thermal, and heartbeat sensors. The pro version also makes you immune to CUAV, EMP and no longer shows your name in red or the crosshair in red when you're targeted.
Point Guard: Every two assists count as a kill towards your killstreak.
Dead Silence: You make no noise.
Recon: Gives you a special kind of radar to spot enemies, most likely. We're not sure on this one.

We're not clear on how many or which previous perks will be coming to the game, but it sounds like the ones that do return will do some from Modern Warfare 2, not Black Ops.

There will also be a bevy of new killstreaks to play with in multiplayer. Here's the rundown on the latest thinking:

EMP Grenade: Temporarily takes out all area electronics.
Littlebird: A tiny remote-controlled helicopter.
Precision Airstrike: Calls in an airstrike on a targeted area.
Stealth bomber: Calls in a B2 Spirit to carpet bomb along a line designated by the player.
Remote Turret: A remote controlled turret.
Directional UAV: A UAV that can be directed into areas to scan for enemies.
Remote Mortar: Direct a mortar team using a zoomable camera view of the map to call in strikes.
Airdrop Trap: A booby-trapped airdrop.
Ammo Resupply: An ammo reloading airdrop.
Escort Airdrop: A protected airdrop.
Specialist Strike Package: This one remains a mystery to us.

While it's likely that some of the killstreaks will drop out or be added in, we've been told that the team has decided to remove the controversial Tactical Nuke killstreak from the game.

Other tweaks being looked at by the team include making sure things like exploding barrels not counting toward a player's killstreak tally.

We've also learned, unfortunately, that this latest Call of Duty still won't support dedicated servers, instead relying on the hosted servers found in previous iterations of the game. Dedicated servers were removed from the franchise starting with Modern Warfare 2. (Modern Warfare 3 appears to be using DemonWare for player authentication, just like with Call of Duty: Black Ops.)"
