White box it...best way to go...

Yes AMDs are actually damn good...about a 3rd less than Pentiums...but if i had the doe...im doin the Pentium any day of the week...make no mistake about it...

ANd if youre gonna get any HD over 40 gigs...please make sure it has at LEAST 8 mb cache on it...trust me...its a HUGE difference from 4 mbs....

And 512 of RAM will do just fine...no need to get more unless youre doin stuff like gaming or music...

And you dont need a super great video card....especially if youre not gaming....you can get a descent one for around $60...

DVD burners are cool...IF YOURE GONNA USE IT...you should have a standard CD ROM as well...for everyday use i.e. loading software,playin cds,etc.....

o yea, Intel is better for general use, while AMD is better for gaming, although the difference is subtle so you wouldnt really notice it.

my advice would be to go with Dell or Gateway, they have excellent customer service, something that you will not get with building a computer or from some of the other manufactors.
for CPU get intel p4 (since you're going to be working with graphics)
ram get at least a 1GB or RAM
for hard drive 100 to 200 GB is enough
for graphic cards just call them and tell the rep that you're going to be working with graphics,

btw. dont get a mac, thats the last thing you want. you will not be able to share programs, and some files with other people.

powerbooks have more processing power than an ibook

kayln, get a dell. dells are cheap and reliable. and as long as you don't need to run high-end programs then it will suit you just fine
