2-0-Sixx it's easy for Gamboa to KO a bunch of bum early in his career. My question is can he still KO an good or elite fighter, and judging by last weekend I'm not sold on him yet. I don't care about his KO record against bums and cab drivers I want to see him look good against a good fighter.
Gamboa has actually faced pretty solid opposition for his first 2 years as a pro (19 fights).
Typically, when someone turns pro they fight guys with losing records, straight taxi cab drivers, bums, etc. Gamboa has never fought anyone with a losing record. His opponents, in order from 1st pro fight to most recent are as follows:
6-1
7-0
40-11 (never do you see a guy with 2 fights fight a guy with over 50)
12-5
17-4
25-1
19-2
7-4
13-1
23-2
27-3
25-0
27-2
35-8
25-6 (belt holder)
22-6
26-13 (this was rogers Mtagwa, the same guy that nearly KO'd JuanMa)
28-0
34-10 (belt holder)
That's a combined record of
418-69.
Compare that, to say, Timothy Bradley. His first 19 fights:
0-0 (debut)
0-0 (debut)
0-1
0-1
1-2
1-9
14-42
0-1
11-16
10-2
6-2
9-11
8-0
9-12
18-12
7-16
20-5
30-9
23-6
That's a combined record of
167-147.
So clearly, Gamboa has fought good opposition and he's already a unified champion (WBA & IBF). To unify two belts in your first 19 pro fights is pretty impressive, as it rarely ever happens.
Now, as far as beating and KO'ing elite fights, depends on who you're talking about. The top guys at 126 are:
1. Chris John
2. JuanMa Lopez
3. Gamboa
4. Orlando Salido (who gamboa just beat)
5. Cristobal Cruz
6. Elio Rojas
7. Daniel Ponce De leon
8. Bernebe Concpcion
9. Rafael Marquez
10. Antonio Escalante
Out of these guys, the only guy I see giving Gamboa problems is Lopez. The other person who is ranked at 126 is Caballero only because he's 6 feet tall and gamboa is 5'5.
