Gamboa is the next Jeff Lacy.
Don't be fooled.
how so? Lacy was hella one dimensional. Gamboa can mix it up pretty good - he can brawl, he can box, add to that he's probably 100X more athletic than lacy. I just don't see the comparison. Unless your talking specifically about hype but even then I don't see it - lacy was called the next mike tyson.

The hype. I think he is going to get exposed once he hits top level competition, just as Lacy did. Unless he drastically improves, which he probably wont.

Lacy was speed and power. Anyone who goes toe to toe with him will lose, etc.
Same thing with Gamboa. Too fast, a ton of power, etc.

Yet they both have horrendous defenses, get hit a ton, and more credit due to Lacy he hasn't been down as much as Gamboa has. Once you start facing top tier opponents you need to bring a lot more to the table than that. He needs more craft.

Not saying its a for sure thing, just saying it looks like he is on the same path as Lacy. They need to move him along slowly, which they are doing.

Even though he is ranked 4th, he has only fought 1 fighter who was even ranked in the top 20. Which was last night.

being knocked down doesn't mean much. Trinidad was knocked down 7 times before he became champion and stayed undefeated until he was 41-0 and met bernard hopkins.

again lacy was very one dimensional. Watch his fights with Robin Reid and if I remember correctly Syd Vanderpool were he struggled and should have showed people he really wasn't all that special.

If you have a really good chin you'll do decent against Gamboa, like last night. Most guys cant take those kinds of punches. I still think Juanita Lopez gets KTFO by Gamboa, he doesn't have the chin for his power.

I remember those fights with Lacy. He didn't look that bad. He just didn't run through them like he did his other opponents.

Nothing I am stating is fact. I can't tell the future, ha.

I just think eventually the top fighters are going to clash.

Juan Manuel Lopez 29(26)-0(0)-0
Chris John 43(22)-0(0)-2
Celestino Caballero 34(23)-2(1)-0
Yuriorkis Gamboa 19(15)-0(0)-0
Rafael Marquez 39(35)-5(4)-0

People are playing him as this potential savior and some feared fighter, but I just don't see it. Maybe I'm just blind to it, who knows.

Match him up with any of those 4 others above.
I don't think Gamboa would be a favorite in any of those fights.

it's the flash, explosiveness and overall swagger that gamboa usually displays that have people excited about him. I'm not saying he doesn't have flaws because he does, it's just the things that he is good at, he is really, really good at (as far as speed, combinations, etc).

It's a very talented division so anyone who things gamboa could mop up all of them are a little crazy, but I would favor him over Chris John and Lopez for sure, Cab will always be a problem for gamboa since that foo is 6 feet tall and gamboa is 5'5. I don't know how much marquez has left we'll see how he looks against lopez.

John is a pretty sturdy dude. I woudln't risk it.

Lopez, ya he's a little untested just like Gamboa. It's a toss up. You have that Mtagwa fight to compare to though.

I'll be going for Marquez. Past his prime but I'll just root as a fan. Just hoping he doesn't get embarrassed in there.

john isn't as good as he once was. He's slipping and doesn't look impressive to me really much at all as of late. Plus I think he's satisfied fighting nobodies in Indonesia.

Marquez, if he still has it, could be a problem for gamboa because I think the style that may frustrate gambao are the counter punchers, the guys that can be patient and wait. The guys that come forward gamboa will eat up. Lopez comes forward I think that fits perfect for Gamboa.

John is just a really sturdy fighter. Nothing else special about him. He would have a really good chance at pulling off a decision win against Gamboa.

Gamboa would have the best chance against Lopez though. It would be a quick win for either fighter. Too bad we probably wont be seeing it any time soon. Maybe in another year or two, at best.

Ya Rios shined more than anybody last night. I never saw him fight before (that I really recall). I would just hear his name here and there. Can't wait to see his next bout.

I'd love to see Marquez vs. Gamboa RIGHT NOW. Marquez, if he's even close to what he was in his prime, could destroy Gamboa, IMO, because he's by far the smartest fighter he's ever faced, the most skilled, and his counter punching would pick Gamboa apart.

With that said...Lopez will destroy him on the mic, and in the ring. Bitch.

If he gets past Marquez.

Gamboa getting negative write ups today.

I think it was more that Rios stole his shine.
The kid is pretty bad...

I tended to agree with HBO analyst Max Kellerman that Yuriorkis Gamboa was a little disappointing in his unanimous decision win over Orlando Salido in their featherweight title fight on this show. Gamboa is fast and talented but he gives the impression that he could go up another gear or two. Harold Lederman made the point that Gamboa will literally step back and admire his work after landing his punches. It was an utterly predictable win by Gamboa but he is such a talented boxer that I think we may be guilty of having unrealistic expectations. Salido is a tough, game veteran and it isn’t so easy to blow away fighters such as this.

Gamboa almost threw it all away, though, when he blatantly hit Salido with a right hand on the back of the head after knocking down the defending champion in the last round. What on earth was Gamboa thinking?

I'm not sold on Gamboa yet. Dude has a ton of skills, but can he stay focused for a whole fight, He needs to go in for the kill more and start KO'ing people.

Would you agree with Kellerman when he kept saying Gamboa appeared bored in the ring? Because that's what it seemed like to me. He seems to really, really want to be the wild, knock out artist that he was coming up the ranks, but he tries to be the more patient, calculating, less wild version that his trainers want him to be. So I think it's a struggle for him in the ring of which version of Gamboa he wants to be.

Well, going in for the kill and ko'ing people is what he did for most of his career, hence is high KO ratio. the idea though is when he does that he leaves him self open, hence the flash knockdowns he suffers. So what do you do? Entertain and kill people but risk getting knocked out yourself? Or fight smart and be less entertaining? It's a tough call.

Apparently, Gamboa has one more fight, and JuanMa has two more before they cross paths.

BAM BAM RIOS stole that show hands down. Late on this, but I just watched last night. Wow. Hope that kid can stay out of trouble.

To an extent. I don't think he was so bored that he was toying with Salido, but he was confident enough to do what he wanted whenever he wanted. He won the fight and did a pretty good job. I'm not knocking the guy at all. I just don't see him as the king of the division. He should be more than happy with a 3rd place finish out of that crowd.

I agree with Merchants comment about admiring his own work...or taking a picture. Several boxers do that here and there. It's just a reaction though. Not a great one, but its more of an instinct that's a little harder to correct.

Rios calling out Soto for "hand picking" his opponents.
That's the first I have ever heard of that.
No one wants to fight Soto. He doesn't really have a long list of people to choose from.

Make it happen!!!
