By Poerqe: It seems like Amir Khan (28-3, 19 KO’s) has signed with the well known boxing adviser Al Haymon. This could be a very smart move by Amir and his team. Not only is it easier for Amir to make a fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr now. But he also doesn’t have to earn that fight anymore.
Haymon could match Khan up with some easy fights. Khan’s team hasn’t been known to pick the best fighters for Amir. They have been matching him up with high risk, low value opponents. Like Danny Garcia for example.
Khan needs to be matched up against guys who are well known to casual fans but don’t pack a punch, like Devon Alexander, Paulie Malignaggi, Timothy Bradley etc. And Haymon is a genius in that department. Probably the fans will lose out on some exciting fights. I don’t expect Khan to fight a Keith Thurman, Marco maidana or even a Shawn Porter for that matter.
We could be in for more Luis Collazo (35-5, 18 KO’s) type of fighters for Khan in the future. I consider that ‘C rank fighters.’ Don’t let the knockout of Victor Ortiz by Collazo earlier this year fool you. Collazo isn’t a big puncher, and Ortiz hasn’t been the same fighter he once was for a long time now. So Amir will likely continue to fight ‘C rank fighters’, at least till he gets his dream match with Mayweather, and then he’ll retire or fight more ‘C rank fighters’. Anyway this is a win-win situation for Khan. He finally found a way to fight soft opponents and in the process not jeopardize a match against Mayweather.
That’s boxing for you these days; it’s not about the best fighters squaring up against each other in the ring. No, it’s all about the more popular fighter with the best connections getting an opportunity gift wrapped to him. And that is sad for the fans. But I guess it’s our fault for sticking up with it.
