The thing is, Angulo was trained by Nacho Baristain, one of the greatests...ever. I don't know why he would leave such a decorated trainer for a guy who's been a one trick pony (Andre Ward. Never really trained anyone else before besides Khan who I agree looks worse than ever). But I'm sure he has his own reasons and Angulo will always be Angulo.

Bernard Hopkins wants to unifiy the 175 lb. division
January 14th, 2014 | Post Comment - 10 Comments
2Share 2 16Share 8Tweet

bernard hopkins By Dan Ambrose: IBF light heavyweight champion Bernard Hopkins (54-6-2, 32 KO’s) turns 49 tomorrow, and he’s hoping to fight WBA 175 lb. champion Beibut Shumenov in March or April in what Hopkins sees as the first of the 3 belts he wants to win. Hopkins wants the WBC title belonging to Adonis Stevenson and the WBO strap held by Sergey Kovalev. Hopkins sees Kovalev as an easy mark, and that could be who he targets after the Shumenov fight if he’s successful in beating him.

Hopkins wants to capture all the 175 lb. titles by his 50th birthday. He’d also like to fight Floyd Mayweather Jr. if he could get him to agree to a fight that would take place at 160. But in the meantime, Hopkins wants to go after all the light heavyweight titles to unify them like he did when he fought in the 160 lb. division many years ago.

“I understand that certain things couldn’t happen in the past because of promoters and managers, and now it’s because of the networks,” Hopkins said to RingTV. “I want to unify the light heavyweight division, like I did the middleweight division, and bring clarity to the light heavyweight division.”

If the networks are going to keep Hopkins from trying to unify the belts then why is he talking so much about wanting to fight Kovalev and Stevenson? It’s almost like Hopkins is name dropping to get attention from the younger fans by mentioning the two fighters – Kovalev and Stevenson – that they’re really interested in right now. Hopkins isn’t generating the kind of excitement that those two fighters are, and I can’t remember any point in Hopkins’ career where he did have fans as interested in seeing his fights as they are with Kovalev an Stevenson.

Hopkins has got a good thing going by having his fights televised on Showtime. With him not having to fight Kovalev and Stevenson, Hopkins has a better chance of remaining a champion for a lot longer than if he were in a position where he’d be forced to make a decision about whether to fight those two guys are not.

Chavez Jr. vs. Vera rematch a done deal for March 1st

Chavez Vera Chavez Jr. vs. Vera Brian Vera julio cesar chavez jr By Dan Ambrose: The rematch between former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (47-1-1, 32 KO’s) and Brian Vera (23-7, 14 KO’s) is set for March 1st. The fight will take place at super middleweight and will be staged at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas. According to Dan Rafael, Top Rank will have WBO featherweight champion Orlando Salido facing two-time Olympic gold medalist Vasyl Lomochenko as the co-feature bout on the card. That fight might end up being more interesting than the Chavez Jr-Vera rematch.

Chavez Jr. will need to do a much better job of making weight for this fight than he did last September when he couldn’t make the 168 lb. limit and had to have the weight raised to 173 lbs. in order for him to fight. For the rematch there will be a $250,000 penalty that Chavez Jr. will be stuck paying if he fails to make weight. Chavez Jr. made $2.5 million for the Vera fight last September at the StubHub Center in Carson, California.

Chavez Jr. won the fight by a 10 round unanimous decision. But fans didn’t agree with the decision, and they booed loudly. It wasn’t just the fans at the StubHub Center who were unhappy with the decision. The boxing world didn’t agree with the decision, and it put Chavez Jr. in situation where he kind of had to give Vera a rematch in order to keep the respect of his fans.

“I told Chavez that he’s destroying his credibility with this weight nonsense,” promoter Bob Arum said to ESPN. “I told him, ‘Make the weight. Let me see.’ So I’m not shooting my mouth off about Chavez and his ability and this and that…He has to fight in the manner that people believe he’s capable of, like he looked when he beat Andy Lee.”

Well the problem that Chavez Jr. has is he’s no longer fighting in the 160 lb. division. The fact that he can’t even make 168 is a sad statement about him. It means that there’s going to be a point in the near future where he’ll be forced to move up to 175, and deal with guys that he’d be best to avoid like Sergey Kovalev and Adonis Stevenson.

Chavez Jr. is going to need to be matched carefully after the Vera fight, if he wins that one. Chavez Jr. looked terrible against Vera, and there’s no way that Arum can put him in with guys like Andre Ward and Carl Froch, because they’d beat him up. Chavez Jr. might be able to beat WBC super middleweight champion Sakio Bika and WBO champ Robert Stieglitz, but that’s about it.

Broner’s trainer has different strategy for Maidana rematch
January 13th, 2014 | Post Comment - 58 Comments

Broner Maidana Broner vs. Maidana marcos rene maidana adrien broner By Allan Fox: Former WBA welterweight champion Adrien Broner (27-1, 22 KO’s) tried to box Marcos Maidana (35-3, 31 KO’s) last December and ended up getting knocked down twice and beaten up in losing a 12 round unanimous decision to the Argentinian fighter.

Broner’s trainer Mike Stafford now has a different strategy for the rematch in April if takes place then. Stafford wants Broner to come out on the attack immediately and brawl with Maidana. With that strategy, Stafford thinks Broner will come out victorious over Maidana.

“You know, Adrien, we’re going to do it, this time,” Stafford told RingTV. “This time, Adrien can do it if he does early like he did in the later rounds. If Adrien starts out in the fight like he did in the later rounds, then he wins the fight. He can’t have the second and eighth rounds. The second and the eighth rounds killed him.”

Broner needs to think about getting a new trainer before it’s too late, because if he follows Stafford’s plan for him to slug with Maidana in the rematch then he’ll very likely get knocked out. It was Broner’s mistake of trying to punch with Maidana that got him in trouble in the early rounds last December. Now, Stafford has his mind made up that it’s a good idea for Broner to come out looking to slug with Maidana while the Argentinian fighter is at his strongest. That would be a bad mistake on Broner’s part, because he doesn’t have the power, speed or size to stand and trade with Maidana in the early rounds. Broner almost has to give ground in the first 7 rounds in order to keep from getting knocked out. If he follows Stafford’s plans, he’ll get knocked out quickly.

Broner should have accepted Floyd Mayweather Sr’s offer to train him because he really needs a good trainer that can fix the flaws in his game, and give him some sound advice. Mayweather Sr. would never tell Broner to go after Maidana early. He would know that Broner would get hurt if he tries to fight Maidana like that. It’s bad enough that Broner wants a rematch with Maidana, but then try and trade with him early in the fight? That’s not a good idea for Broner.

So Hunter has done terrible with both fighters so far.
LOL I didn't realize he had been with him that long either but both guys have been booty with him if that's the case.

I might go to that Alvarado/Marquez if it's in Dallas. But then again, the undercard might suck so bad that it wouldn't be worth it. I hate TR undercards.

Roy Jones to become Russian citizen?

Hryunov: Roy Jones To Tour Russia, Seek Citizenship

By Luke Furman

According to Russian promoter Vladimir Hryunov, former four division world champion Roy Jones Jr. will have another tour of Russia, with music performances in Kursk, Sochi, Krasnodar and Belorechensk. Jones has fought in Russia, twice, with a knockout loss to Denis Lebedev in May 2011 and a win over a fringe contender from France in December 2013.

Hryunov says Jones is going to obtain Russian citizenship and register in Belorechensk and Krasnodar.

"In May, Roy will go on tour in Russia. He will visit Kursk, Krasnodar, Sochi and Belorechensk" - said Hryunov. "We have already received an offer from a construction company that is ready to do the construction of houses for Jones [to live in Russia]."

In the last 15 years, JM Marquez is the only fighter I can think of that hasn't left Beristain at some point. There must be something there, I just don't know what it is? A lot of fighters switch trainers, but he's lost more fighters than anyone I can think of other than maybe McGirt

Floyd Mayweather is a PRIZEFIGHTER, Will Not Fight Pacquiao for Free

By Shawn Craddick

That was a noble thing that Manny Pacquiao put out there last week. He challenged Floyd Mayweather to fight him for Free and whatever money is raised, they donate to Charity. It sounds good but that will never ever happen. Floyd Mayweather has gone on record and said that he is a Prizefighter which means he fights for money. It's not about Legacy, it's not about what people say, it's about Money. That is why he changed his moniker from Floyd "Pretty Boy" Mayweather to Floyd "Money" Mayweather.

So for all those fans that are still hoping to land a Manny Pacquiao fight forget it. Floyd has 4 fights left in his contract and it won't be Pacquiao. The cold war between networks and promoters is far from over and Floyd is going to generate enough money with Showtime that he does not need "ONE" big payday. Sorry to let you fans down, and I tried to do it easily. The fight will not happen for Free and it won't happen for MONEY. Let's move on now, nothing to see here.

Former sparring partner say Jermell Charlo has no heart

By Kevin Davis

The Charlo brothers are quickly rising to the top of the boxing world, identical twin brothers, who like their father have tipped their hats into the boxing world. Now that the two brother Jermall and Jermell are getting title shots, some fighters are getting little vocal about it. Earlier we heard for jr. middleweight champion Ishe Smith speak on it, now a former sparring partner of both brothers spoke on the issue.

"Well I think that Jermell the one with the braids, he ain't got the heart his brother got, his brother got some dog in him. If you stay on Jermell he will give in, Gabe Rosado will break his will early." said sparring partner who doesn't want to be named, because he doesn't want to be blacklisted in this boxing game. Last year Jermell fought a tought and skilled veteran Demetrius Hopkins nephew of future Hall of Fame champion Bernard Hopkins, and grind out a tough victory.

Many critics might not believe they are ready but they are here and getting title shots and have opinions but they are here and is willing to prove they are the next set of brothers to run the boxing game like the Klitschko brothers.

OBSERVE AND FIGHT: THE HBO VS. SHOWTIME WAR RAGES ON WITH NO END IN SIGHT

It's a new year in boxing and the HBO vs. Showtime war rages on, this weekend, with no end in sight. This Saturday night marks the first time in 2014 that boxing fans will get what they routinely saw in 2012 and 2013. I'm writing about conflicting fight cards on the two biggest boxing networks in the world, HBO and Showtime. Too many times in 2012 and 2013, boxing fans were forced to pick which fight card they would rather have watched on a Saturday night because both networks tried to outdo the other with in-ring action on the same night. Hell, on one night in September of 2012, HBO staged a pay-per-view event, in Las Vegas, at the Thomas and Mack Center, between Sergio Martinez and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., while Showtime had Canelo Alvarez headline a Showtime Championship Boxing card two miles up the road at the MGM Grand against Josesito Lopez. While this weekend's fight cards aren't exactly going to blow the ratings through the roof, it doesn't allow the networks to truly see how great it would be to split fight dates so fans wouldn't have to choose which fights to watch. Can you imagine what life would be like if we didn't have DVR? Fans would miss half the fight action they want to see. As of this moment, this Saturday night marks the only scheduled time in 2014 when fans will have to pick which network to get their boxing fix. While this likely won't be the last time they will have to choose, let's hope this is the start of the networks finally using some sense and realizing that the ratings will be much higher if fans didn't have to split their time.

As far as this weekend's fight action, in my opinion, HBO has the much more appealing fight card. Anytime a Top 10 pound-for-pound fighter is in action, that fight should take priority. Some may not agree with me, but WBO junior lightweight champion Mikey Garcia is in my Top 10 and is the 2nd best fighter in any division south of 140-lbs (only Guillermo Rigondeaux is higher on my list). Garcia is the perfect combination of size, strength, speed, and ring technician. One second, he looks like he is planning his next 10 moves, and the next second, the opponent is face down on his back. I'm looking forward to seeing what, if anything, Juan Carlos Burgos can do against Garcia. Burgos was robbed last January against Rocky Martinez in his first attempt to win the WBO 130-lb. title, so maybe this will be a redemption fight. I just don't see any way Burgos can last 12 rounds against a fighter as skilled as Garcia.

Showtime's main event, Lamont Peterson vs. Dierry Jean, does not seem like a world title fight. The last time we saw Lamont Peterson in the ring, he was destroyed by Lucas Matthysse. For political reasons, the fight was fought at 141-lbs., just one pound over the 140-lb. junior welterweight limit. Because of this technicality, Peterson still holds the IBF junior welterweight championship, meaning his fight with the undefeated Jean will be for the title. I know he holds the belt, but, in my mind, Lamont Peterson is not a world champion. Peterson should win this fight. The Canadian, Jean, has fought nobody of consequence, and Peterson has faced the best of the best. From a skill and experience perspective, Peterson has everything going for him. Also, this fight is taking place in Peterson's hometown of Washington D.C., but after everything that has happened throughout Lamont Peterson's career, especially lately, he should not be a world champion. He is still a world-class fighter, and one of the best 140-lb. fighters in the world, but he needs to build himself, and his image, back up in order to be considered a champion.

The undercard fights might steal the show for both networks. HBO's co-feature has rising, undefeated, heavyweight contender Bryant Jennings facing another rising, undefeated contender, Artur Szpilka. This fight will be dictated by Jennings. If Jennings forces Szpilka to box, he will cruise to victory; however, if Jennings tries to brawl and put on a show in his first fight on HBO, he may end up getting himself knocked out. Both fighters have the capability to finish the other before the final bell, but the more boring the fight, the better it will work out for Jennings. Something tells me this will be a war though. Showtime's co-feature will also be a can't miss fight. Undefeated junior middleweight Jermell Charlo takes his biggest step up against the always game Gabriel Rosado. Charlo seems to have all the skills necessary to become a world champion, but Rosado, who will likely be the bigger, more powerful man in the ring, will test Charlo's will like no one has before. If Charlo can pass the test of Rosado, he may line himself up for a world title fight in his next bout.

Boxing fans were finally treated to Jean Pascal vs. Lucian Bute, but the only winner seemed to be none other than Adonis Stevenson. Jean Pascal may have won the fight, but did he do anything to make boxing fans believe he can beat Stevenson? Yes, Canadian fans will pay top dollar to see this fight, and it will interest non-Canadian fans as well, but at this point, I have a tough time believing Pascal can beat Stevenson in a 12-round affair. Stevenson, though 5 years older, is the much fresher of the two fighters and is getting better and better every time out. Pascal was unable to finish Bute, even though Bute was fighting at light heavyweight for the first time since 2005. Stevenson would have finished the job in spectacular fashion, much like Carl Froch did to Bute. Pascal did not seem to be in a rush to get in the ring with Stevenson according to his post-fight comments. Maybe Pascal might be better off going after a fighter like Mikkel Kessler or Tavoris Cloud in his next fight, rather than trying to get in the ring with Stevenson. Adonis Stevenson, though he burst onto the scene in 2013, was just proven to be the best fighter in Canada. He's got the skills, charisma, and appeal to jump up to #1 in Canadian boxing fans' hearts.

If the rumors are true, Adonis Stevenson will have a showcase fight, in April, against Andrzej Fonfara. Fonfara has been featured on ESPN Friday Night Fights as of late, but, according to Fonfara, the #1 contender, a deal has been reached for the fighters to face one another. Stevenson would be the heavy favorite in this fight, and it's possible Sergey Kovalev could be the co-feature fight once again. Hey, maybe Kovalev could face Bute in what would be perceived as showcase fights, once again, for both Stevenson and Kovalev.

Where does Lucian Bute go from here? Even after the injuries and the long, successful career, Bute does not seem to be on the verge of retirement. If Bute does continue fighting, he will be best served dropping back down to super middleweight and taking on a top fighter. Even though he got blasted by Carl Froch, Bute may still have what it takes to be a top 168-lb. fighter. There are still plenty of names out there at 168-lbs., and if Bute can beat one of them, he might shoot right back up into the world title picture. However, another Bute loss will signify the end of his career.

Did everyone see Frank Galarza's knockout of John Thompson on ShoBox? It's the early leader for Knockout of the Year!

There is an interesting fight card in Germany on Saturday. WBO cruiserweight champion Marco Huck will give Firat Arslan a rematch after their debated first fight in November 2012. The co-feature will bring about the return of David Price, who begins his comeback trail after consecutive knockout losses to Tony Thompson.

Don't forget about the great boxing action on Friday night as well. ESPN Friday Night Fights has a tremendous main event between Thomas Williams and Cornelius White, NBC Sports Network Fight Night brings us the return of Curtis Stevens, and Fox Sports 1 has an excellent card featuring Antonio Orozco taking on Miguel Angel Huerta, with an IBF eliminator also on the card featuring former champion Cornelius Bundrage taking on Joey Hernandez. Not a bad Friday night of action if you ask me.

The new boxing reality show "Knockout" is shaping up to be more "The Ultimate Fighter" than a boxing show. For the 3rd time in a week, a confrontation took place on the set. Rival trainers Floyd Mayweather Sr. and Ruben Guerrero had to be separated on two different occasions in what will most likely be a common trend on the show considering the fact that both men are camera-hungry personalities. However, the most recent altercation was completely shocking and unprovoked as former top contender Tim Coleman attacked the show's Executive Director of Competition and longtime boxing businessman, Rick Glaser. According to media reports, and Glaser's Facebook page, Coleman bum-rushed Glaser, who is in his 50's, because of a Facebook conversation between Coleman's wife and Glaser in which Coleman's wife advised Glaser that Coleman was having legal issues with the police. That's probably not the smartest thing to do considering Glaser was one of the direct reasons for Coleman's involvement in the show.
