Lightweight explosion

By César Pancorvo: Joel Casamayor defeated Diego Corrales in 2006, became Linear (and WBC) lightweight champion –many dispute the fact the he is the Linear champ, and have solid arguments to do it– and then defended, twice, against Santa Cruz, barely a Top10 contender that, in the eyes of most people with two eyes, won that fight, and against Michael Katsidis, an outstanding win for the Cuban nicknamed “El Cepillo”..

While Casamayor was spending months as the central character of an unexciting linear reign at 135, Juan Diaz –since late 2004– was making noise and eventually became the top contender, unified belt holder (WBA, WBO, IBF), made seven successful defences of the WBA belt and collected win over Popo Freitas, Julien Lorcy, Jose Miguel Cotto and Julio Diaz: of course, many started seeing him as the “true, people’s champion” since 2006, because of he was more dominant than Casamayor.

Juan Diaz, who was the novelty in the 135 division, was already creating a resume that most 23 years old fighters would wish to have, unifying three belts and overshadowing the much more experienced Champion. But that didn’t matter, 135 was not considered a particularly interesting division (the Top5 contenders, in 2006, were: 1) Joel Casamayor 2) Juan Diaz 3) Zahir Raheem 4) Jesus Chavez 5) David Diaz. The division wasn’t weak and wasn’t strong).

Lightweight had a renaissance this year when Nate Campbell, an old fighter with several losses, who was a huge underdog, destroyed Juan Diaz’ aura of invincibility, and also when Casamayor, whose reputation as champion was burnt in flames because of his abject performance against Santa Cruz, showed his superb talent by defeating a younger contender and apparent heir to the throne –Michael Katsidis. Since that moment, a new atmosphere surrounded this division, which is now my favourite and probably boxing’s best –but it could still be welterweight and it is debatable–: Joel Casamayor, Nate Campbell, Juan Diaz; and you have to add some characters that appeared a posteriori, fighters who have migrated (or have plans to migrate) from 130: Manny Pacquiao, Juan Manuel Marquez, Joan Guzman, maybe Humberto Soto.

Casamayor, who has been injected some prestige by the public after his last TKO win, will fight again, in September, against Juan Manuel Marquez. While Pacquiao has opted for the long path of facing other belt holder and challenges at 135, Marquez has aimed his forces at Casamayor; he’s going for the main course directly, without appetizers or salads.

Campbell defeated Diaz and many declare that he is the “real man” at 135. His next opponent, also in a September fight, will be Jr. Lightweight contender Joan Guzman, while Manny Pacquiao, who debuted at Lightweight against David Diaz, is apparently going to face Humberto Soto next, in November. There were rumours, during more than a week, of a Pacquiao versus Edwin Valero fight, but Bob Arum recently indicated that: “A lot of people feel we are better off to go to a Soto fight and if Valero gets cleared (he’s referring to the medical clearance that Valero needs from the NSAC) put him on the undercard” (Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today).

Meanwhile, Juan Diaz has decided that, instead of returning to the scene with an easy win, Katsidis will be his next opponent.

Four fights. And then we will have the winners, hopefully, facing each other and facing, also, the new fighters that will soon arrive to the rankings, like Amir Kahn, or against bigger challenges, like the rumour of Pacquiao-Hatton at 140. Pacquiao started at 106 pounds and Hatton has been Light Welterweight Champion for three years –and his weight in the actual bouts is more than 140 or 147 pounds–: that fight somehow reminds me of Duran-Hagler. Not the style or the greatness of the fighters involved, but the concept is comparable.

What will happen to 130? If we examine The Ring ratings, the Champion (Pacquiao) and the majority of the five top contenders (except the experimented argentinian warrior Jorge Barrios) left of will leave that division. La Hiena Barrios versus Rocky Juarez could be the fight to determine who is the new top dog of the Jr. Lightweight division.

I’m not sure how much will this fantastic lightweight era last, but let’s hope that it can deliver us all the key fights and, in that aspect, distinguish itself from the excellent, but inconclusive, welterweight era.

-It is not foolish to think about Paul Williams as a middleweight (he fought above 147 for most of his career, but against easy opposition), but it is very unlikely that he will beat Kelly Pavlik –actually no, it is not very unlikely, it is very impossible. Williams should have done like Tito Trinidad and win a title at 154 first and then go up to 160 and challenge some ranked fighters before confronting the Champion. I don’t give him any chances against Pavlik, and I would have preferred to see Williams face the winner of Margarito-Cotto first.

David Haye: "I'll Violently Knock Wladimir Klitschko Out"

By Mark Vester

IBF/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko was very happy with his knockout win over mandatory Tony Thompson at the Color Line Arena in Germany. Another man happy that Klitschko pulled out the win is former undisputed cruiserweight champion David Haye, who moves up to heavyweight in the fall and for the last few months has been calling Klitschko out.

Haye was not impressed with Klitschko's win. He doesn't think the Ukranian champion has a defense or knows how to fight. He predicts a three-round knockout if Klitschko performs in the same mannger when they are in the ring. He claims to have mastered Klitschko's style and will know every move that he makes.

"I'm happy that Klistchko won. Klitschko has no defense. All Klitschko did was hold. He has a pawing jab and hopes to land that one right hand. You can't teach an old dog new tricks. He's been doing the same thing year after year. Every time he's gotten in the ring with someone fresh, someone fast and someone with some heart - he's been knocked out. I'm that guy. If he fights me the same way he fought that guy tonight, he's get knocked out in three rounds," Haye said to Setanta Sports News.

"The first big punch I'll land, I'll knock him out. He has the perfect, perfect style for me. I don't want him to have any more fights before me because I don't want anyone else to do what I'm going to do to him. I watched every single one of his fights ten times. I know every move that Klitschko makes before he does."

"I see the same pattern time after time. The same patterns I saw in Enzo Maccarinelli are the same patterns I see in Klitschko and he will get knocked out in the same manner that Enzo did. I can’t tell you how much his style will gel with mine and end with a violent knockout very, very quickly. I will do what I have to do to get in that position where he is forced to fight me."

Klitschko will first have to meet IBF mandatory Alexander Povetkin in the fall, but Haye is not worried. He thinks Klitschko will beat Povetkin in the same manner that he did Thompson.

"Klitschko doesn't allow fighters to get inside like Povetkin. Little, short plodding guys that walk forward. Povetkin isn’t very fast. He [Povetkin] likes guys to come close and get inside because he has a good workrate. Klitschko won't work at him. He'll keep pawing with that long jab and Povetkin doesn’t close distance very quickly - I do. I have no worries over that Povetkin fight because Klitschko will outpoint him or stop him late like he did tonight."

Agreed. His problem is he's scared of getting hit because of his weak chin. I think all 150 lbs of me could knock him out.

Wladimir Klitschko Says David Haye is in The Running

By Mark Vester

IBF/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko says that former cruiserweight champion David Haye is one of the leading candidates to fight him in the fall. Klitschko is scheduled to defend against IBF mandatory Alexander Povetkin in the fall, but according to the champion - things could change.

Povetkin is fighting against heavyweight veteran Taurus Sykes on July 19 at the Olimpyskiy Sports Palace in Chekhov, Russia. If Povetkin is upset, or receives an injury during the bout and can't commit to a fall fight, Haye would be one of the leading men to step in.

Haye has been chasing Klitschko since he announced his move to the heavyweight division. He says Klitschko is ducking him, but the champions says the big talk by Haye will have to be backed up in a heavyweight ring.

"David Haye is one of them. He was here in Hamburg and he wants to fight me. He is one of the candidates," Klitschko said. "[But Povetkin] is the IBF number one and he is waiting. He fights next Saturday and we will see in the next weeks who will be my opponent."

Klitschko's manager Bernd Bonte is fully geared to his fighter facing Povetkin next.

"Next up is the mandatory defense against Povetkin," Bonte stated. "That is the fight that will come next."

Whether it's Povetkin or Haye, Klitschko is expecting a fight. He says that when several titles are at stake, three belts if you count the IBO, fighters will bring their best. He says Tony Thompson, who Klitschko stopped in eleven-rounds on Saturday night in Germany, brought his best.

"Every opponent will give all he has because there are three belts at stake," Klitschko said. "It is not an easy task to defend the titles - you can see that. It has been a while since I last had a black eye. It was a great fight and I am pleased I won that clearly. Thompson did very well defensively

Danny Williams Takes More Shots at Audley Harrison

By Mark Vester

British heavyweight champion Danny Williams is once again on a rampage. A few days ago, Williams lashed out at UK rival Audley Harrison. Williams handed Harrison the first loss of his career, but then Harrison came back in the rematch to score a third-round knockout. When asked by the Sunday Mirror on why he is suddenly going after Harrison in public, Williams said that he was sick and tired of fighters like Harrison and Matt Skelton always being named for major title shots while he is ignored.

"I feel like everyone is ignoring me at the moment," said Williams. "I keep hearing about Audley Harrison and Matt Skelton getting world title opportunities but I want to scream, 'What about me?' Its a joke because Audley can't even attract a crowd in Britain and his latest fight has been scrapped. I have won and lost in my two fights with both Skelton and Harrison but for some reason I am overlooked when people talk about title fights."

When asked, Williams said that he would give Harrison an opportunity to shut his mouth by staging a trilogy bout.

"I know that Harrison is no longer an attraction and the British fans are sick of listening to his ridiculous claims," added Williams. "When he turned professional seven years ago he claimed he could win the British title straight away and that was an insult. Well I'm the champion now and I'm prepared to finally give him his chance but I doubt he will accept my offer."

Williams will defend his British title against John McDermott in Dagenham on Frid

Should Wladimir Klitschko Download New Software?

Hellfire Sun Times
Big Sloba-DoNN
July 13, 2008

As most of all you know The brothers Klitschko are robots created by the evil Soviet regime. They of course were designed initially to defeat Bobby Fischer in chess but Soviets figured they can make them Heavyweight champions also.

Last night Dr. Klitschko, also known as CBC288 by his designers, defeated Tony Thompson to defend his Heavyweight Title. It was, not surprisingly, a "robotic" effort on his part. The right hand punch was well calibrated and landed accurately and the software did well to recognize to abandon jabbing for a right hand lead.

It seems to me however that his software has acquired several visuses that are preventing the Champion from bringing about the ideal performance.

For one, the Klitschko bots Cycratic Sensor is malfunctioning. This sensor allows a fighter to sense when the other is wounded. Sometimes it will work fine but at other times the Klitschko bot will hit his opponent with 3 punches and instead of capitalizing it will turn defensive and hold the opponent in a clinch.

The second problem I notice Is that Klitschko bot is having trouble communicating with Manny Steward (Blackbot) during in fight situations. One of the biggest appeals of designing the champ would be to allow him to absorb information and execute stratigi communicated by blackbot.

However Consider This Classic Exchange:

Manny: When he misses with the left hand he is off balance and you can hit him with your right.

Klitschko:..............*&^ Error Loading Page *&^

Other problems include the fact that management has allowed Klitschko's uppercut software package to expire without renewal.

I think he made 12 million dollars on this fight, it is time the Wladimir Klitschko to download some new software correct?

Pacquiao Given Deadline, Soto-Lorenzo a No-Contest

From WBC President Jose Sulaiman:

Regarding the WBC interim super featherweight world championship fight between Humberto Soto and Francisco Lorenzo, the WBC Board of Governors has voted for the following:

1. The World Boxing Council officially confirms its decision of NO CONTEST, which was rendered at ringside on June 28.

2. Soto and Lorenzo must fight again, after the time that Lorenzo’s medical suspension by the Nevada Boxing Commission’s medical board has ended on December 26, 2008, with an updated thorough medical examination of Lorenzo, and the commission’s approval for him to fight.

3. Due to the length of Lorenzo’s medical suspension, Soto will be approved to fight for the title if that fight is before the end of October, which is about 60 days before the end of Lorenzo’s suspension.

4. In spite of our friendly relationship with Lorenzo, the WBC is imposing on him a fine of $2,000 (U.S.) for his unsportsmanlike actions in the ring which were successful in influencing the referee’s decision.

The WBC will not allow this type of behavior to become an example for losing boxers who try to win on unethical and false pretenses. The $2,000 fine will be donated to a children’s hospital in the Dominican Republic, the home of Lorenzo, with the donation handled directly and personally by the Dominican Boxing Federation on behalf of the WBC.

5. The present double WBC world champion at lightweight and super featherweight, Manny Pacquiao of the Philippines, must announce by July 28 which title he has decided to keep. If he decides to relinquish the lightweight division title and keep the super featherweight title, Soto must fight Pacquiao for the WBC super featherweight world title, with Lorenzo fighting the winner.

The WBC Board of Governors believes that its ruling, expressed above, is the least controversial possible. This is the official decision rendered by a majority vote of the Board of Governors, to which I am fully committed as President.

I would like to have the liberty of expressing my personal feelings, as well as my feelings as WBC president, that Humberto Soto has been the victim of one of the most unfair decisions that I have seen in my 57 years as a boxing commissioner, which have been devoted to a life-long struggle for justice. The world saw his tremendous performance against Lorenzo for the entire fight.

However, I respect the WBC Board of Governors’ ruling, done in the spirit of justice, for the least controversial and best solution of this matter.

I would like to finish by expressing my deepest pride and honor to be a part of the exemplary, perservering and passionate group of people integrated in the WBC, who are totally dedicated to the sport that they love without receiving any compensation.

So I'm almost positive Manny isn't going to relinquish the title he just won. So it'll be Soto - Lorenzo again for what ? So Lorenzo can get beaten into a bloody pulp again ? Thats the dumbest shit ever.

So basically Pacquiao might not be fighting in November ? I think if this is the case and Soto has to beat this guy into submission again, then Arum should go back and try to get the Valero fight in order again.

Well, it's good the Soto vs Lorenzo was ruled a NC imo. Other than that they shouldn't even have to fight.

Pacman will let go of the super featherweight belt or whatever (130) and keep the belt he just won from diaz (135) so the points they made about if he did otherwise is meaningless, which means Soto can still fight pacman in November (since Lorenzo won't be cleared to Dec.).

Pretty good fight this Wed......

Last Chance: Toney vs. Rahman II

Promoter Dan Goossen hosted a press conference in Sherman Oaks, California at a trendy Italian restaurant, Sisley, to announce “Last Chance” an intriguing rematch between James” Lights Out” Toney and Hasim “The Rock” Rahman, which is scheduled to take place Wednesday night, July 16th.2008 at Pechanga Resort and Casino in Temecula, California and to be televised live on FSN “Best Damn Fight Night”.

Even though both contestants are in twilight of their careers and a name “Last Chance” seems fitting: winner gets a final title shot- loser no shot, the event generated a huge interest with the local media. Unpredictable character Toney, who is never at a loss for words and Rahman, who has a certain east coast edge to him are two ingredients along with great food at Sisley’s that had this press conference packed with media.

Dan was a gracious host and acknowledged that both men were throwback fighters and promised that the rematch (their first fight for Rahman’s WBC World Heavyweight title back in March, 2006 ended up in a draw) will be an exciting action filled battle. He commended Toney for getting in great shape and said; “There is not a Heavyweight out there that could compete with him when he is in that kind of shape.”

Todd Duboeuf, president of Top Rank, seemed really excited about upcoming bout and said that this fight was a no brainer and that was as easy to make as a phone call.

Rahman seemed more interested in playing with his Blackberry at first and when called to the microphone just said that he would do the talking in the ring on July 16th. However as time went on he made fun of Toney’s inability to accept defeat and asked: ‘But you have never lost a fight, James?”, then he promised to make a statement and knock him out.

Toney said; I want to thank the man upstairs for the opportunity for me and Rahman to do what we do best, which is to fight. This is the real Heavyweight championship fight, not Klitschko or whatever the other guy’s name is. Hasim is one of the best fighters in the world, he has won two world titles and he has fought everybody in the division just like I have, so this is a real Heavyweight championship fight.” Toney also said that this time he got his ass in shape and promised to win this fight decisively.

Dan Goossen summed it up:” Toney’s Hall of Fame career is on the line against a 2-time Heavyweight World Champion– the man that KO’d Lenox Lewis to win the title– in a do or die bout for both men. It’s one of the few times in sports where winning isn’t good enough. The winner has to be impressive.”

This will also compete directly with HBO's bullshit PPV Mosley/Mayorga scheduled for the same night (bullshit as in no fuckin way that deserves to be PPV, the fight I'm sure will be good)
