Antonio Margarito: "Miguel Cotto Will Be an Easy Fight"

By Mark Vester

The fists will fly and the blood will flow when Antonio Margarito challenges WBA welterweight champion Miguel Cotto at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on July 26. Margarito has trained to the max, he studied Cotto's past performances and appears confident that he will expose the holes in Cotto's game and win without any problems.

"I know Cotto is a tough fighters and therefore we studied his fights. We know that is the past he's been hurt, but he continues to fight and that says a lot about him," Margarito told Primera Hora. "Every fighter has weaknesses, but the public will have to wait until July 26 to see those of Cotto. I won't say anything right now, but it will be an easy fight for me."

Margarito says he is 90% ready for the fight and ready to bang or box with Cotto, but he expects the fight at some point to turn into a brawl.

"This will be a great fight for both, there is no doubt about that. I have prepared myself like never before. I've worked on my boxing in case Cotto decides to make it a boxing match and I've worked on my fighting if he decides to make it a fight," Margarito said. "I've always said that the good fights will come sooner or later. It's the fight that the public wants and they will be the big winners in this fight. I know this is the most important fight of my career

LIVE FIGHTS TONIGHT ON ESPN2 AT 9PM ET.

Chris Henry vs. Rubin Williams is the main event. Hopefully Williams comes to fight cause he's been fairly shitty his last few fights out. Austin Trout has been looking like a decent prospect but he really hasn't been fighting anyone with a pulse and probably won't be tonight.

anyone watching the Wlad Klitschko fight on Saturday? the fuck is Tony Thompson? nice record but I don't recall every seeing him fight or hearing his name much prior to signing the deal with Klitschko. Sounds like another easy opponent for the disappointing Klitschko.

Evander Holyfield Getting His Finances in Order

By Mark Vester

In a follow-up to a story posted several weeks back, former heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield is getting his finances in order. Holyfield was under the gun with a variety of lawsuits pertaining to money and some reports had him listed as being on the verge of bankruptcy. He was sued by the mother of his 10-year-old son for failure to pay child support, he was also sued by a Utah consulting company for failing to repay a $550,000 loan. To make matters worse, his house was put on the auction block by Washington Mutual Bank because he defaulted on a $10 million loan.

Earlier today, Holyfield reached a settlement with his son's mother, paying the $9,000 he owed in back child support and coming to terms on future obligations. The settlement came before a court hearing where the attorney for his son's mother would have asked the judge to jail Holyfield.

Holyfield's home was recently taken off the auction block. He came to an apparent settlement with Washington Mutual Bank, but the details are said to be confidential due to privacy laws. But not everything has been settled, the lawsuit over the $550,000 loan is still ongoing.

Wlad didn't want to fight him. Thompson was the mandatory for Wlad's WBO belt and threatened to get Wlad stripped if he didn't fight him. He's probably gonna get schooled but give him some kind of props for not taking the pay off to give up his eliminator shot.

Hopefully they set up something after this and the retarded fight of Peter vs. Vitali gets called off since Vitali probably can't even make it through training.

Current Heavyweights - The Era With No Name

By Troy Ondrizek

As with everything in life whether it is a dynasty or a boxing division, the person or entity in charge at that time, has the period or era named after them. We have the Ming dynasty and the era of Ali for example. However, the current heavyweights have no champion and haven’t since Lennox Lewis. Yes, a fact disclosed by scribes more often then the Bush Administration mentioned that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction. So why mention this again? Honestly, I’m tired of Wladimir Klitschko (the division’s number one contender) fighting fights that don’t matter.

Don’t get me wrong, I like Tony Thompson, he is a skilled smart fighter, but he isn’t a good enough fighter or ranked high enough to make this a real world title fight. Wladimir talks of being the best and being a great champion, and he isn’t the only one, but the heavyweights as a whole seem to want to be great but run when the chance arises. The heavyweight division is a walking contradiction. Thus we are at this point where the heavyweights have no name.

The name on our tongues for the past fives years has been Klitschko, whether it be Vitali or Wladimir. The Klitschkos could win scrabble with their name but can’t seem or want to stamp it on the heavyweight title. The only way we’ll have a champion is if Wlad fights Samuel Peter or Ruslan Chagaev. While Peter is fighting a Klitschko in his next bout, it’s the wrong one, and Chagaev is reminiscent of Vitali; talented, strong, and a good beard but their bodies have struck them down unlike any opponent could.

So what we get in the interim is another snoozer between Nikolai Valuev and John Ruiz; an absolutely ridiculous bout between Samuel Peter and Vitali Klitschko (who hasn’t fought since right after the last election); and Wladimir being forced to defend the trinket (WBO title) he won in his last meeting with Sultan Ibragimov (because it sure as hell wasn’t a fight) against dangerous and avoided (for several reasons) Tony Thompson.

A couple years ago boxing was hurting for attention and much of the blame was rightfully put upon the heavyweights. Now that boxing has re-emerged no thanks to heavyweights, we are hoping that the big boys can follow suit and give us something to cheer about. It’s not like Wladimir isn’t a good fighter or always puts on a boring display; the man has power in both hands and a shaky chin which for most heavyweights makes for pure excitement and fan-friendly affairs.

You add on Wlad’s technical skills and one can see how he is the best heavyweight around, but it’s not his skills that are in question, it’s his heart/desire to be the champion that leaves us wanting. Remember the time he dropped that right hand on Calvin Brock that when HBO played it in slow motion it made Brock’s head look like the Michelin Man? Remember when Wlad was knocked down three times (one legitimately) against Samuel Peter and got up to whip the Nigerian and wobble him late in an excited and much anticipated bout? I sure do, but unfortunately I remember the one-sided beating he gave to an obviously shot Lamon Brewster and Wlad smacking at Sultan’s jab for twelve rounds like a timid kitten hitting a ball of yarn.

So why fight Tony Thompson? The common answer is because he has to - and I don't buy it. Klitschko doesn’t have to fight anyone to be honest, but defending a trinket belt is stupid unless it is part of a world title fight. And as I touched on earlier, no one really wants to fight Thompson and for good reason. Tony “The Tiger” is a tall (6’5”) sturdy southpaw who is very technical and lacks real power. Meaning he is a tough guy to fight and isn’t near as popular as the other Tony the Tiger, so he doesn’t bring in the bucks.

Samuel Peter was open to fight as so was Ruslan Chagaev before his foot tried to detach itself from his body. So why not fight them Wlad? Youth is starting to be served in the division and soon Cristobal Arreola will be putting more butts in the seats than Klitschko (at least in America), and Alexander Povetkin already has more hot chicks showing up to Wlad’s press conferences than Klitschko does.

Cruiserweight champion David Haye wants a shot at Klitschko right now, I say give it to him. Wladimir thinks David needs to earn the shot, well I say he has. The one thing Haye has done that no heavyweight ranked in The RING’s top ten has accomplished is, and this is huge, actually won a world title. Before you get upset, you must realize that I run solely on the linear championships and give no credence to the corrupt sanctioning bodies. With that disclaimer out of the way, based on the fact that David is a world champion, he has earned the right to fight the top contender whenever Haye feels he is ready. Think about it, instead of DVR’ing this weekends fight and going out and making other plans; what if Klitschko was fighting Haye or Peter? You or I would make a party around the fight. That’s the truth about where the heavyweights are, they are afterthoughts, and it’s because there is no true claimant to the title.

I hope this era ends soon because there is only so much Manny Pacquiao I can watch, and I get bored of Kelly Pavlik knocking people out, and I become complacent of top tier fighters like Miguel Cotto and Antonio Margarito squaring off (all lies, screw the heavyweights I love these guys).

The division for its own pride should take a step forward and at least give itself some kind of identity

Deandre Latimore Wants James Kirkland To Step Up

By Mark Vester

Junior middleweight Deandre Latimore (19-1, 16KOs) wants to fight the young bull of his weight division, undefeated James Kirkland (22-0, 19KOs). Last month Latimore scored an upset by stopping Sechew Powell, who was rated number-one by the IBF.

Kirkland was scheduled to return to action on October 4 on an HBO televised triple-header being put together by promoter Gary Shaw. Latimore's manager Jerry Giuliano was contacted for the potential opponent slot.

Giuliano tells BoxingScene.com that Kirkland's team would later turn them down.

"They passed on the fight with us after considerable thought. I guess the Kirkland 'I will fight anybody anytime' is just more hot air by a fighter who is being protected. We will fight anyone anytime in the division and that is a fact. We are tired of hearing how nobody wants to fight him," Giuliano said. "Here we are and just off the upset of the year, knocking out Sechew Powell, the number 1 IBF contender on June 11 at the Hard Rock in New York on ESPN. Old time boxing used to be great when guys like the great Muhammad Ali would fight anyone who came along. Now it it all about trying to build a record with mediocre fighters."

A possible Latimore-Kirkland bout is up in the air at this point. Kirkland was dropped from the October HBO date due to his recent split with Shaw and has not officially signed with a new promoter. Recent rumors have Kirkland leaning to Golden Boy Promotions

Campbell vs. Guzman in Jacksonville? Bradley in Co-Slot?

By Ryan Songalia

Nate Campbell's promoter Terry Trekas of One Punch Promotions informed BoxingScene.com/MaxBoxing.com that the remaining details for a Joan Guzman clash on September 13 are being solidified.

"Terms are pretty much agreed to," Trekas said, "but there are still a few minor details to work out. Nothing that should be a deal breaker."

As reported earlier by this site, Showtime will televise the card. Trekas says that WBC junior welterweight chmapion Timothy Bradley is rumored to make his first title defense in the co-featured bout, either against Juan Urango or Randall Bailey.

Campbell, who is also co-promoted by Don King Productions, won the WBA/IBF/WBO titles by beating previously undefeated Juan Diaz by split decision this past March in Cancun, Mexico. His record stands at 32-5-1 (25 KO).

Guzman, 28-0 (17 KO), held title belts at 122 pounds and 130 pounds. He is the WBO's number 1 ranked contender.

Barring further developments, there is a possibility that Campbell-Guzman could head to "The Galaxxy Warrior's" Sunshine State hometown.

"[Co-promoter Don King] is shopping around for a site deal, but if nothing acceptable is available then we will probably take it to Jacksonville."

When asked why Campbell has not been frequently discussed in the Manny Pacquiao Sweepstakes, Trekas replied, "We let Top Rank know that Nate wasn't officially bound to do the Guzman fight, and that we would skip him and fight Pacquiao in November if they were interested. They were already committed to the [Edwin] Valero deal."

Nate Campbell on Joan Guzman (amongst other things), says "as soon as Guzman trades with me, the fight will be over"

I'll remember that Nate!

Only thing I don't like about the fight being in Florida is that if it's a real close fight, the decision will go to Campbell. That's home court advantage.

Kendall Holt has to return the belt" -Ricardo Torres

By Fausto Perez Villareal, Photo by Alfonso Cervantes/EL TIEMPO - With his face intact, without any mark of the punches he received on Saturday night, Ricardo Torres returned to Barranquilla last Monday. "I'm tranquil and optimistic. I know I was impressive on Saturday. Kendall Holt isn't a better boxer than me. I lost because of an accident. He has to return the belt. He didn't do anything to win it."

"Mochuelo," who suffered his second defeat in 34 professional bouts, arrived along with his trainer Orlando Pineda and his representatives Sergio Chams and Alberto Agamez. He was welcomed by relatives and a crowd of followers at the Ernesto Cortizzos airport. "Look at my face. I don't even look like I fought! Holt, on the contrary, is all swollen. His eye is cut and imflamed. He didn't defeat me.."

After the bout, Ricardo Torres recognized that up in the ring, during the fight, he wasn't aware of the involuntary head butt that sent him to the canvas. "When I knocked Holt down for the second time, I knew he was done. That's why I came after him, to finish him off. I cornered him, then I released a right and then a left. I don't know what happened next. When I regained counsiousness, I was in the corner without gloves. They told me about the head butt and that I had lost by a knock out. They took me to the hospital to make sure I was fine. The also took Kendall to close the wound I made on his eye. Later I saw the video and I had no doubt: Holt didn't knock me out cleanly. That fight must be declared a no contest."

"Mochuelo" Torres recognized, however, that the head butt was unintentional. "Holt didn't have the intention to hit me with his head and I have to recognize that fact. We have to fight again. I'm gonna take two weeks off and then I will resume training. That belt will return to Colombia, I promise."

Carl Froch wants Jermain Taylor fight

Super middleweight boxer Carl Froch faces more frustration in his quest for a shot at the vacant WBC super-middleweight title as his much hyped bout against US star Jermain Taylor is thrown into doubt amidst a cash row. Froch hit back at claims from his rival that he is not well known enough to fight in the States..

Speaking to Setanta Sports News during Steve Bunce’s Boxing Hour he said:

“I disagree. I think myself and Jermain Taylor is a massive fight, especially in Britain. And it’s got high expectations in America as well.

“Taylor’s a marketing fighter, I‘m a marketing fighter in Britain. If we get it on, on either side of the Atlantic, I think it’s a big fight.

With the two boxers so far apart on money it seems likely that Jermain Taylor will take on Jeff Lacey, a move that has been condemned by Froch.

“I’m surrounded by fighters and opposition that keep bottling it.

“Jeff Lacey hasn’t fought anybody since he got floored by Calzaghe. He hasn’t done anything since then. He’s not a big name. They think Lacey’s an easier fight than I am.

“I agree with them. But the fact is I’m the number one contender with the WBC and Jermain Taylor’s next in line.”

Juan Diaz vs Michael Katsidis On Sept. 6

Golden Boy Promotions is bringing big time boxing back to Houston, Texas. On Saturday, September 6th, Houston’s own former Three Time World Champion, Juan “Baby Bull” Diaz will face off against Australian warrior Michael “The Great” Katsidis in the first boxing event at the Toyota Center in Houston. Diaz will be making his Golden Boy Promotions debut as he returns to the ring in front of his hometown crowd in what might prove to be his toughest test to date against Katsidis, who like Diaz, will be with prepared to go to war for the win. The event will be broadcast live on HBO’s Boxing After Dark..

In addition to the local-flavored main event, Golden Boy Promotions is pleased to announce that Houston native and 2000 Olympic Silver Medalist Ricardo Rocky Juarez will meet former Junior Lightweight World Champion Jorge “La Hiena” Barrios in the co-featured bout of the HBO broadcast.

The doubleheader featuring Diaz vs. Katsidis, in a scheduled 10 round lightweight main attraction and Juarez vs. Barrios, in a 10 round junior lightweight co-feature bout, is presented by Golden Boy Promotions and sponsored by Cerveza Tecate, Amigo Energy and Dewalt Tools with Diaz vs. Katsidis being presented in association with Northeast Promotions. The bouts will air live on HBO’s Boxing After Dark beginning at 10:15 p.m. ET / PT, 9:15 p.m. CT. Doors for the evening’s event will open at 6:00 p.m.

Tickets for Diaz vs. Katsidis and Juarez vs. Barrios, priced at $200, $100, $60, $40 and $25, go on sale Thursday, July 10 at 10 a.m. CT and are available for purchase, online at www.ToyotaCenterTix.com, by phone at 1-866-4-HOU-TIX and select Houston area Randalls locations. Tickets will be available at the Toyota Center Box Office starting Friday, July 11 at 9 a.m.

“If there’s ever been a fight almost guaranteed to provide all out action from bell to bell, it’s this one,” said Oscar de la Hoya, President of Golden Boy Promotions. “Diaz and Katsidis only know one direction – forward – and when they meet in the center of the ring on September 6th, there are going to be fireworks.”

“HBO’s Boxing After Dark series made its name on fights like Diaz-Katsidis,” said Richard Schaefer, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions. “Marco Antonio Barrera-Kennedy McKinney and Arturo Gatti-Wilson Rodriguez were just two of the spectacular wars that aired on the series and I have no doubt that Diaz-Katsidis will join those classics in the hearts of fans around the world.”

“We are thrilled to be hosting two of Houston’s finest boxers, Diaz and Juarez, here in their hometown at Toyota Center,” said Doug Hall, General Manager and Vice President Toyota Center. “We have been looking for the right time and match up to present our first boxing event and the time has come. Working with HBO and Golden Boy Promotions, this is sure to be an amazing night.”

At just 24 years old, Houston native Juan Diaz (33-1, 17 KO’s) has done more in his eight years in the pro game than most fighters achieve in a lifetime and all while being enrolled as a full-time student at the University of Houston. A stellar amateur who missed out on the 2000 Olympics because he was too young to compete, Diaz instead turned pro in 2000 and tore through the lightweight division with an aggressive style that garnered him a legion of fans. In 2004, Diaz won the WBA Lightweight World Title with a 12 round unanimous decision over Mongolian Lakva Sim. After five successful defenses, Diaz added the WBO Lightweight belt to his trophy case with an eighth round stoppage of Brazilian superstar Acelino Freitas in April of 2007. Six months after the Freitas victory, Diaz stopped Julio Diaz in nine rounds to add the IBF Lightweight World Title. Despite a close split decision loss to Nate Campbell in his last bout on March 8th, he knows that with a win on September 6th, he will be one step closer to adding a fourth World Championship to his already impressive resume.

“Michael Katsidis is a great fighter and a former world champion,” said Diaz. “I’m excited just to get back into the ring. I feel like I have something to prove to my fans and team and on September 6th, I’m going to win big and take the first step back to regaining my world title.”

An all-action warrior who has been favorably compared to former World Champion Arturo Gatti for his brawling style in the ring, Michael Katsidis (23-1, 20 KO’s) may hail from Toowoomba, Queensland, in Australia, but United States fight fans have adopted the 27-year-old as one of their own after a series of breathtaking wars that have made him must see TV. After dominating the Australian scene, the 2000 Olympian took his show on the road in 2007, winning the WBO Interim World Lightweight crown in England by stopping Graham Earl and then defending it in the States with a thrilling 12 round decision win over Czar Amonsot. Both of those bouts were instant classics featuring multiple knockdown, cuts and thrilling back and forth action. His 2008 campaign began with another war filled with brutal exchanges and multiple knockdowns when he lost his title to Ring Magazine World Lightweight Champion Joel Casamayor in March in one of the most exciting fights of the year thus far. Even with this impressive resume of thrilling fights, most believe his bout with Diaz will surpass all his previous bouts when it comes to action and excitement.

“I’ve been a fan of Juan Diaz for a while and I know he’s got no quit in him; in fact, he’s just like me in a lot of ways,” said Katsidis. “But on September 6th, all that respect will go out the window when we’re both trying to knock each other out. It’s going to be an explosive fight all right, but I’m bringing the dynamite.”

A 2000 Olympic Silver Medalist, Ricardo Rocky Juarez (27-4, 19 KO’s) has his heart and hopes set on winning a world title. The dangerous and very experienced fighter has been through extremely tough tests in the ring, never backing down from anyone in four world title bouts including a stunning upset loss to Humberto Soto for the WBC Interim Featherweight Championship; coming up short in two close, controversial battles with the legendary Marco Antonio Barrera; and a hard fought points loss to future Hall of Famer Juan Manuel Marquez. Having been so close to reaching his goal, the Houston native is hungrier than ever for his first world championship and knows that Barrios is a roadblock in his path that must be removed if he is to reach his goal.

“I’m excited that this fight is finally going to happen and in my hometown,” said Juarez. “I’ve been waiting for Barrios for a long time so I know he is a dangerous and experienced fighter, but I also know I’ll be prepared to stop him in front of all my Houston fans on September 6th.”

Former World Junior Lightweight Champion Jorge Barrios (47-3-1, 34 KO’s) of Tigre, Argentina, is known for his warrior’s heart and never say die attitude which was on full display in his 2003 war with Acelino Freitas which featured round after round of furious, back and forth exchanges including the classic eleventh round which won Ring Magazine’s Round of the Year for 2003. “La Hiena” went on to win the WBO Junior Lightweight World Title in April of 2005 with an exciting fourth-round TKO victory over previously unbeaten WBO Champion Mike Anchondo. He successfully defended the title twice, losing it via razor thin, split decision in another thrilling bout to then and still undefeated Joan “Little Tyson” Guzman. After a series of cancelled and delayed bouts following his third-round KO of Decho Bankluaygym in his last bout in April of 2007, Barrios is ready to continue his quest to regain his crown. He knows that he will have to get past an equally title-hungry Juarez September 6th in order to get another title shot.

“Rocky has never fought anyone like me and I’ll teach him a lesson in the ring on September 6th,” said Barrios. “He will not be able to handle my size and experience. I’m hungry for a win and I’ll be ready to lay it all on the line that night.”

Jermain Taylor vs. Jeff Lacy For The WBO Title, 11/23?

By Mark Vester

According to promoter Lou DiBella, there is a chance that Jermain Taylor will face former Olympic teammater Jeff Lacy in the fall with the vacant WBO super middleweight title at stake. Recently the WBC called for a bout between Taylor and Carl Froch for their vacant title, but that fight depends on whether or not Lacy is able to get by his July 23 tuneup with Epifanio Mendoza. If Lacy wins without and suffers no injury, he will likely face Taylor on November 23, a date reserved by HBO. If that happens, Froch would have to face Jean Pascal with the WBC title at stake. A purse bid for Taylor-Froch has been set for July 25 by the WBC, two days after the Lacy-Mendoza fight.

"If Lacy were to get [beaten by Mendoza] on 23 June I imagine a lot of US tv money would free up and we might be able to make the fight," DiBella told Steve Bunce's Boxing Hour. "I'd still have two days to get on a plane to see Jose (Sulaiman, WBC chief). If we went ahead and fought Lacy. Froch will probably meet Jean Pascal from Canada and the winner of that fight will be seen as a more major contender from American television and there would be more money on the table for a Jermain Taylor fight for the winner.

"The other thing is Calzaghe is going to get stripped of his WBO also and that title will be vacant. It is not an issue of us not believing we can beat Froch it's an issue of money. I take the same position with every fighter I have, the belts are nice to have but you get the belts to get the money. If the money is greater not fighting for that belt you do what you have to do to make the money."

DiBella says that HBO is not willing to put up enough money for a Taylor-Froch encouter, but are willing to pay much more for Taylor-Lacy.

"When you are the bank you have a lot of power. Their attitude with respect to Carl is who the Froch is Froch? I love Mick but he should have gotten him to the US sooner. You look at Hatton he had to take some fights where the money was okay, it was pretty good at the beginning, but he had to fight on American tv to get some exposure.

"The only exposure he has on US tv was on ShowBox which frankly nobody watches and it wasn't his best night, it was one of his worst nights. The perception on this side of the pond is not that Froch is the fighter you know he is on that side of the pond. I know it's a more testing fight than Jeff Lacy, but I can't fight the bank and I can't fight the powers that be in the US."
