Sergio Martinez Eyes Ring Return In March, April 2014

Sergio Martinez Eyes Ring Return in March, April 2014

By Elisinio Castillo, notifight.com

WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (51-2-2, 28KOs) expects to return to the ring in "March or April 2014." Martinez, 38-years-old, last fought on April 27th in Argentina, when he retained his title with a twelve round unanimous decision over unbeaten British contender Martin Murray. During the match Martinez suffered several injuries and needs the necessary time to fully recover.

Martinez told Tiempo Sports that he might retire after two more fights, because of a promise that he made to his mother. In terms of future opponents, Martinez doesn't rule out anything but he named former three division champion "Miguel Cotto" (37-4, 30KOs) as one possible option.

Froch: Kessler fight takes priority over Andre Ward rematch
June 19th, 2013 | Post Comment l Boxing Forum

Froch vs. Kessler III mikkel kessler carl froch andre ward By Scott Gilfoid: Well, it looks like IBF/WBA super middleweight Carl Froch (31-2, 22 KO’s) isn’t too keen on getting back in the ring with the talented WBA super middleweight champion Andre Ward (26-0, 14 KO’s) and taking the risk of getting a second schooling from the American.

Froch is saying that a third fight with Mikkel Kessler takes priority over a rematch with Ward. Froch just beat Kessler last month by a 12 round unanimous decision by the scores 116-112, 115-113 and 118-110 in London, UK.

Froch said to Jenna Jay at Otrboxingradio.com “I’ll leave it to my promoter to decide which route we’ll go but a rematch with Mikkel Kessler…until he’s back we’re not going to know exactly what he wants to do but that will take priority over a rematch with Andre Ward as far as we’re concerned because Andre Ward doesn’t bring much to the table in terms of revenue.”

I really like how Froch uses the old ‘I’m leaving it up to my promoter’ bit. When you see a fighter doing that one, it’s often a sign that they’re looking for the promoter to take the heat for them not wanting to take a dangerous fight that they might not win. In the case of Ward, I see that as a guaranteed loss for Froch.

How does Froch know what Ward brings to the table in the revenue department? It’s not as if Froch fought Ward in the UK before. Their fight took place in Atlantic City, New Jersey, and there’s no way of telling how well it would do if it were staged in the UK. I do know that the 2009 fight between Froch and Andre Dirrell was a sellout in Nottingham, UK.

If Dirrell was able to pack the fans in Nottingham, then I can see Ward doing the same thing if Froch wanted to stage the fight in an outdoor stadium in Nottingham. I think it would bring a huge mess of fans and Froch could get his chance to try and avenge his loss to Ward.

I think Froch and his promoter Eddie Hearn are really overestimating the interest in a 3rd fight between him and Kessler. If Hearn makes that a pay per view fight like he did the last one, I can see it bringing in really dreadful numbers because Kessler looked disinterested in the fight and it really wasn’t that great of a fight.

Froch looked slow, clumsy and beatable, but Kessler just didn’t look mentally engaged into the fight. A motivated Kessler would likely schooled Froch and beat him worse than he did the first time they fought.

I can see Froch and Kessler fighting each other over and over again until either Kessler says no more or the British boxing public stops purchasing the fight on PPV. Also, at some point, the WBA and IBF are going to step in and order Froch to start defending these titles against the mandatory challenger because he can’t lock the titles up while he fights Kessler over and over. There’s got to be some title defenses in there otherwise it makes it look like there’s no one in charge of monitoring the champions fights.

Cotto?!?!

Fight Golovkin, Peter Quillin or retire. Cotto lost two in a row and isn't even close to being a middleweight.

He tried to fight Ortiz who is a welterweight etc.......He finally fought Trout. Now after he fights Mayweather I just hope he starts to fight real guys at 154 or even 160 which is where he belongs. Got Em!!

Meanwhile Ward is chasing Froch for a rematches and selling his soul to Top Rank to fight a 160lb Chavez Jr. And people have the nervous to praise Ward's resume like he shouldn't be fighting these guy or Stevenson.

It's getting a little disappointing lately with Ward. He's looking too much at short term financial success rather than long term . But his resume was very solid and he's earned his #2 pound 4 pound status.

In regards to Chavez I don't know if he'll ever be at 160 again or not. His upcoming fight is at 165.

Marquez, Bradley Battle Over Rehydration Clause, Testing
Click Here To Email Printable version Search BoxingScene Database*

by Luis Sandoval

The Juan Manuel Marquez and Timothy Bradley welterweight class scheduled for October 12th seems to have already hit a snag in regards to the random style drug testing that is set to be administered. Bradley has stated in the past that any fighter who signs up to fight him also has to sign up for random anti-doping testing. Marquez says he will comply with Bradley’s request but Bradley will in return have to comply to his own request of not being able to rehydrate more than 10 pounds after their official weigh in.

“Bradley he wants to do the anti-doping test. I'm ready for that. But this is a not a rule for the fight. I want after the weigh in, I want Bradley not to [weigh] more than 10 pounds more because he is heavy. He's too big. This is not a rule but if he wants anti-doping test, I want him [not to weigh over] 10 pounds [after the weigh in]” Marquez would reveal.

Marquez has been under some scrutiny after his knock out win over Manny Pacquiao last year as many suspected him of using something in order to achieve his physique and the ability to knock Pacquiao out cold. Marquez is linked to former PED distributor Angel Memo Heredia but both have insisted their results were due to hard work and not anything illegal.

Marquez insists he wants to prove he’s clean but would also like the testing to be done in particular way to prevent any problems when the samples are tested.

“Look, that's not in the rules. But a lot of people have said things about me so I want to prove that I'm a clean fighter and that in my 20 year career I have been clean. I do ask that when they do the testing whether its VADA or USADA, that when they take the sample, they take it at the same time. Because they take one sample one day, another sample a different day and then you get misinformation. I would like for both of us to test at the same time so there's no problem with any banned substances” stated Marquez.

When BoxingScene interviewed Bradley, he was made aware of Marquez’s new request surrounding the drug testing and him not being able to rehydrate over 10 pounds after the weigh in. Bradley wasn’t having it.

“That's stupid. That's the dumbest thing I ever heard in my life. If you're clean take the tests. Plain and simple. I just think it’s dumb. I can't weight 10 pounds over? We fighting for the Welterweight championship baby. This ain't no catch weight. This ain't no 143, no, this is 147” Bradley would tell BoxingScene.

Bob Arum also stated the request was not part of the deal and didn’t seem like it would be something that would be stipulated.

Marquez for the moment looks like he will be taking a strong stance on this matter. He admitted Bradley was a bigger fighter and while he’ not worried about it, he feels it could play into the fight.

“Right now, a lot of fighters have tested positive and I'm against that situation because if you are, you are one step ahead of your opponent. So it’s perfect. It’s not a rule. He's asking for the anti-doping testing and I want that after the official weigh in that he doesn't weigh more than 10 pounds. I see him as a big fighter [and] that doesn't worry me but that could be an advantage for him the day of the fight.”

Things will definitely need be ironed out soon and agreement reached in order for things to continue as planned.

As for the actual drug testing, Bob Arum informed the commission will actually be responsible for having the testing done for both fighters under a similar stringent process as USADA or VADA. More on that to come.

There's some serious bad blood there though. I'd rather see him fight the other guys you named or even Chavez again, but I'd like to see him beat the piss out of Cotto. Might be a decent fight too.

At this point with what Martinez has shown in the last 2 fights, I think he'd better stay away from these young guns or he's gonna be kayoed

Danny Garcia and Lucas Matthysse will likely meet this fall, according to Golden Boy Promoters, but probably not on the September 7 date that was previously expected.

The earlier statement from Top Rank's Bob Arum that Julio Cesar Chavez Jr's return would be pushed back to September 7 in Los Angeles worried boxing fans about another head-to-head night with Golden Boy and Showtime, but those fears appear to be much ado about nothing, as Richard Schaefer says that a Danny Garcia-Lucas Matthysse fight is still being worked on, but not for that date.

"I'm looking at a different date. We'll see what we're going to do. It's looking good, but I'm not done yet," said Schaefer, chief executive officer for Golden Boy Promotions, which represents Garcia and Matthysse. "When you make those big fights, you need to work on it, get people on the same page, go a little bit, take a little step back, then go again. I'm in the process, but I would hope within the next week or so I have something to announce."

Garcia-Matthysse is seen as the fight that will determine the true top dog at 140 pounds, as both guys are currently on a roll, and boxing fans are highly interested in seeing them go toe-to-toe. Oscar De La Hoya also tweeted earlier, rather clumsily, that Garcia and "Matisse" are close to finalizing a deal.

Los Angeles was considered a possible host for the Garcia-Matthysse fight, too, but there's no firm word on location or venue. Garcia has headlined twice already at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, and his fan base is on the East Coast, as he's a native of Philly with a growing New York backing. Matthysse, put simply, has no fan base in the United States, other than Hard Core Die Hard Boxing Heads, and usually they're on Twitter with bums like me.

As the lineal champion at 160, Martinez has an obligation to fight the top guys or retire. If he just had a meaningless title or whatever, sure fight whoever. But he's the man at 160

So are people going to ignore the Marquez Bradley situation? This potentially could scrap the fight. Also JMM said he agreed to both VADA and USADA testing before the fight. I dont get his rehydration clause he suddenly wants Bradley to have. Bradley is a small welterweight just like JMM.
