Can Virgil Hunter turn Khan’s career around or is he finished?
October 1st, 2012 | Post Comment

Virgil Hunter Khan Molina Khan vs Molina amir khan By William Mackay: Like when he first started training with Freddie Roach, Amir Khan is ecstatic about being with his new trainer Virgil Hunter. Khan believes that Hunter is going to turn his career around and completely and bring him back to where he was when he was a world champion in the light welterweight division.

Hunter has built the large part of his new found popularity as a trainer due to the great job he’s done his top fighter WBA/WBC super middleweight champion Andre Ward, who clearly is the best fighter in the 168 pound division right now. However, just because Hunter was able to do that with the totally focused and serous minded Ward doesn’t necessarily mean he’s going to be able to do the same for Khan. There’s a world of difference between what Hunter had to work with initially with Ward compared to what he has in front of him with Khan.

Hunter will likely be trying calm Khan down, to make him think more in the ring, and to stop running around throwing wild shots. Khan wastes so much energy when he fights with his movement which often times seems senseless. And the wild punches Khan throws are also something that Hunter will have to get some control over if he’s to turn Khan’s career around. It looks at times like Khan is just throwing fast shots to impress the judges and the fans instead of fighting smart. The fast combinations leaves Khan open for getting hit with counter shots that he doesn’t see coming because he’s preoccupied with throwing his crowd and judge-pleasing flurries.

I don’t know that Khan is going to be able to slow down and fight under the controlled pace that Hunter may way him to. Hunter will probably turn Khan into a really conservative fighter where Khan basically jabs 90% of the time and throws single power shots in the other part. Hunter will likely realize that it’s too dangerous for Khan to throw combinations period because he doesn’t have the chin to take incoming fire after he throws his combos. We’ll probably see Khan become a really boring fighter from now.

One bad thing that is working against Khan is that he’s being matched up against a weak opponent in his next fight in facing 5’6″ Carlos Molina. This in turn will cause Khan to be brave and to slip away from whatever game plan that Hunter has for him in order to throw fast combos like he usually does to try and obliterate a weak opponent.

It would be better if Khan were facing a tough guy like Breidis Prescott, who would force Khan to fight in the style that Hunter wants him to in order to win. Khan wouldn’t have any margin of error against Prescott because if he doesn’t listen to Hunter and just tries to slug with Prescott, Khan will end up getting knocked out in the 1st or 2nd round. That’s why it’s better that Khan have a dangerous opponent to be facing instead of a guy that has zero power and no chance at winning the fight like Carlos Molina.

dude bigface. Should Pac vs Floyd be at 147 vs 154? That's what it boils down too, that was the whole point. You're arguing just to argue. Obviously it should be at 147 pounds.

Floyd is a little bigger than Pac, not a lot, but a little, both in height, reach and his body structure. However they both fight at 147 so there would be absolutely no excuses and the weight means nothing when fighting at the same weight.
I don't care about what weight they should be fighting at because Manny has a fight with Marquez in Dec at another catch weight not Floyd. Manny, Marquez, and Mayweather, or all the same damn size. 1'1/2 inches in height and 3lbs in weight don't make you a bigger guy so shut that bullshit up. You got proved wrong so just move on and add that to the list of excuses you have if or when Mayweather slaps around Manny in ring.

List of excuses why Manny loss:

Mayweather was bigger then Manny. new one added
Manny's head not in boxing anymore.
Mayweather waited for Manny to get old.
If they would've fought in 2009 Manny would've won.

Same bullshit different day with you..

You're right they're clearly identical twins separated at birth 100% identical clones, despite Floyd himself saying he's the bigger man, all of the Mayweather family, Marquez, Martinez, everyone says Floyd is a bit bigger but hey what do they know. You're right, let's move on.

I think once a fighter moves up in weight and proves himself at that weight, he shouldn't move down to fight anyone. Mayweather proved himself at 154. He got a little battered up but he still came through. He shouldn't have to do anything. Maybe Manny should take this catch weight, maybe a tune up at 154 and then fight Floyd. I just don't believe in asking a fighter to come down. If you want to fight him, go to his weight class. Why would he need go down to yours?

Plus Manny isn't even faster than Floyd, so to try and preserve speed at a lower class is a null point. He's better off putting on some mass and bringing some of his power back.

It's a matter of the request.
Dawson moved down because he was calling out Ward. So Ward said "OK, if you want to fight me that bad, then come to my division". Manny has been talking about Floyd lately, so it's a little much to also ask him to come down again. It's one thing if Floyd was chasing Manny, but it's the other way around at this point.

Why doesn't Manny go down to 140 and fight people calling him out? There's no way he would. Any of them would be willing to move up and fight Manny at 147.

Really, Pac isn't in the position to be calling any shots. Actually, he never has. He just follows Arum, Koncz, etc. and now look. He's fighting Marquez for a 4th time.

Anyways, dead issue. Kind of pointless to debate.

hmm yeah ill have to disagree there. floyd pac isn't like ward dawson, its the biggest fight in boxing. plus its not like floyd has been fighting at 154 for years like dawson was at 175. he's had one fight at 154 in 5 years or something like that. he's a true welterweight no doubt about it. but if floyd wants to stay at 154 that's his right. I'm sure he'll get a nice payday against Canelo. not sure who else after that unless he wants to fight martinez.

Alfredo Angulo the latest to join trainer Virgil Hunter

Alfredo Angulo
Apparently, Alfredo “El Perro” Angulo wants to learn how to duck.

The 30-year-old slugger (20-2, 17 KOs ) appeared at a press conference in LA Tuesday to announce his new partnership with reigning Trainer of the Year Virgil Hunter. Angulo hasn’t laced up the gloves since being stopped by James Kirkland last year. However, there’s a little more to the story then just the Kirkland fight.

After the bout, Angulo turned himself into the immigration detention center in El Centro , California . His work visa had expired a few months before. His thinking was the issue would be resolved quickly. Angulo was anxious to get back to training and avenge the Kirkland defeat. Instead, he would spent the next seven months languishing behind bars. Questions still linger as to why Angulo spent so many months at the detention center. Did they forget about him?

The detention center released Angulo on August 14, 2012. The bomber needed a new trainer. He had previously worked with Hall of Famer Ignacio “Nacho” Beristain. Going with Hunter is a stroke of genius. The molder of undisputed super middleweight champion Andre Ward - Hunter should be able to teach Angulo about the finer points of defending himself.

Angulo joins Karim Mayfield, Michael Dallas, Brandon Gonzales, Fernando Guerrero, and Stan Martyniouk. All have improved under the guidance of Hunter. It was also announced last week that Amir Khan will be working with Hunter.

On November 10 at the Staples Center in Los Angles, Angulo will face Raul Casarez (19-2, 9 KOs ) in a scheduled 12-round eliminator. Angulo is excited to be back.

“It’s very exciting to have my comeback fight in my second home of Los Angeles ,” said Angulo. “I have been working really hard to give the fans a good show like they are used to because I am here thanks to their support. ‘El Perro’ is back!”

Jermain Taylor set for Oct. 12 bout

Former middleweight champion Jermain Taylor will continue his comeback from a serious head injury when he faces Raul Munoz on Oct. 12 at the Ameristar Casino in St. Charles, Mo., promoter Lou DiBella announced on Tuesday.

Taylor will face Munoz in a scheduled 10-round middleweight bout on the undercard of a "ShoBox: The New Generation" doubleheader on Showtime (11 p.m. ET/PT). The network will telecast highlights of Taylor's bout.

The fight will be Taylor's third during a comeback that followed a 26-month layoff after he suffered a small brain bleed during a 12th-round knockout loss to Arthur Abraham in the opening round of the Super Six World Boxing Classic in 2009.

Rafael's Boxing Blog

Rafael Get the latest scoop and analysis on the world of boxing from ESPN.com's Dan Rafael in his blog.

Taylor, a 2000 U.S. Olympic bronze medalist, outpointed Bernard Hopkins in 2005 to become the undisputed 160-pound champion and then beat Hopkins again in an immediate rematch. He made four title defenses overall before being knocked out by Kelly Pavlik in the seventh round in 2007.

That was the beginning of a 1-4 rut for Taylor, who was violently knocked out in three of the losses, including 12th-round knockouts at super middleweight in 2009 by Carl Froch in a world title fight and by Abraham.

Taylor suffered a small brain bleed in the loss to Abraham, dropped out of the Super Six tournament and stepped away from boxing for 26 months.

After going through numerous medical exams by top neurologists, Taylor was granted a license in Nevada -- one of the toughest states in the country to be licensed in -- and launched a comeback in December. He returned to middleweight and knocked out Jessie Nicklow in the eighth round.

In his second comeback fight, Taylor (30-4-1, 18 KOs), 34, of Little Rock, Ark., got knocked down hard in the ninth round and was in trouble against Caleb Truax, but hung on to win a unanimous 10-round decision.

Munoz (21-15-1, 16 KOs), 36, of Topeka, Kan., represents a step down from Nicklow and Truax. He has lost two in a row by knockout and is 3-6 in his last nine bouts with five of the losses coming by knockout.

"Everything is fine with Jermain," DiBella told ESPN.com. "He's content to do this kind of fight. He's getting in some rounds and keeping up the activity. He was off for a long time, so this is a classic keep-busy situation.

"We tried to make a bigger fight for him, but we couldn't work anything out. Those bigger fights were not makable for different reasons, so he will have this fight and stay active. If everything goes well against Munoz, Jermain probably will fight a bigger fight -- maybe in December, January or February. But we are looking for a bigger fight for him."

In the Showtime-televised main event, 23-year-old blue-chip prospect Jose "Sniper" Pedraza (10-0, 6 KOs), a 2008 Puerto Rican Olympian who turned pro in February 2011, faces Allan Benitez (7-1, 1 KO) in a scheduled eight-round lightweight bout.

Middleweight prospects Jonathan Cepeda (12-0, 11 KOs) and Lamar Russ (10-0, 6 KOs) square off in the scheduled eight-round co-feature.

"After my last fight against (on Aug. 31), I only rested for a week and then got straight back in the gym," Pedraza said. "For this fight, the training has been very intense. I have sparred with former world title contender Mario Santiago, world champion 'Rocky' Martinez and Luis Rosario, who is a very good amateur boxer. I am looking forward to putting on a great performance on the 12th and taking another step towards fulfilling my ultimate goal of

Pacquiao Booked For April Fight
By NICK GIONGCO
October 3, 2012, 4:30pm
MANILA, Philippines — Bob Arum has already booked Manny Pacquiao a fight next year provided that he gets past Juan Manuel Marquez on Dec. 8 in Las Vegas, a sign that the Filipino is not retiring anytime soon.

“I have talked with Manny and we agreed to hold his fight (in 2013) on April 20,” Arum told the Bulletin on Wednesday.

Arum said that date is perfect since it will come at a time after March Madness, the US NCAA college basketball finals that takes place in March and just before the May 2013 elections.

Arum said he is not looking too far ahead because Marquez is going to be a very tough challenge for Pacquiao, who is hoping to put an end to the controversy over his first three matches with the Mexican counter-puncher.

Even though Pacquiao had won two of three bouts, the first having ended on a split draw in 2004, ringsiders believe the Marquez had actually been robbed each time.

Pacquiao, who turns 34 on Dec. 17, wants to finally silence his critics, while the 39-year-old Marquez is out to prove that he has Pacquiao’s number with a convincing stoppage win in this fourth fight.

Arum believes there won’t be a fifth chapter to one of boxing’s most storied rivalry.

“Neither fighter wants a fifth fight,” said the 80-year-old Hall of Fame promoter.

Pacquiao is set to leave for training in the US and he has already filed his certificate of candidacy as congressman of Sarangani so he can fully concentrate on his eight-week buildup under Freddie Roach.

Marquez, meanwhile, is in the early stages of his preparation, showing up at the Romanza Gym in Mexico City in the afternoon after doing his morning workout in the mountains of Toluca that includes such primitive methods like wood-chopping.

From what Marquez has been showing, he is out to ruin Pacquiao and Arum’s plans next year.

floyd fought oscar at 154 and moved back down. against cotto he weighed what, 151? no big deal, he's a true welterweight
You do know that Manny weigh in at 147lb against Bradley. That's 4lbs and 1 & 1/2 inches in height that Mayweather has over Manny. Again that sounds like two guys that's the same damn size. Just cut the shit.

Mayweather has the Berto vs K-9 winner, Trout vs Cotto winner, Canelo, the Ghost if he can get and win a fight against Bradley. Mayweather has fights out there for him if someone looks good in winning there next fight.

You're finally seeing the light that Manny and Top Rank don't want and never wanted to fight Mayweather. Everytime Manyweather put a offer on the table Manny walked away to fight someone else in-house...

I believe Manny always wanted to fight Floyd. I believe he still does.
It's the people around him that won't let him. Realistically, if you were his manager or adviser would you? I wouldn't...

It's a fans fight.
Not a good business decision.

Put it like this.
If they believed Manny could beat Floyd, they would set that fight up ASAFP.
Why set him up to fight to lose? That's just plain stupid.

Arum doesn't give a shit.
I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't even like boxing.
The guy is all dollar signs.

Roger Mayweather on Floyd: "Motherf@#ker" would be crazy not to walk away after Pacquiao & Bradley fights
By Johnny Benz, Doghouse Boxing (Oct 3, 2012)
-
Roger Mayweather
By Johnny Benz, Doghouse Boxing. Recently, Roger Mayweather, Uncle and trainer of Floyd Mayeather Jr., told Boxing scribe Chris Robinson (Examiner) that his nephew could rank in close to $200 million just by facing Manny Pacquiao and Timothy Bradley. Well should a scenario like that actually happen, in whereas Mayweather got to fight back to back Pacquiao and Bradley for around $200 million, one has to wonder if Mayweather would keep on boxing after making so much money? Roger believes Mayweather would indeed hang up the gloves.

When discussing with Robinson if Mayweather were to meet Pacquiao and Bradley in successive contests, Roger admitted that it could be the end Floyd's professional boxing career.

Roger stated: "A motherf@#ker gets close to $200 million and he can’t walk away, something’s wrong with him. Motherf@#kers don’t even make that kind of money and they still walk away from the sport. If you make that kind of money, what else do you need to do?"
