Brandon Rios-Mike Alvarado Verbal Agreement Reached

Article Link - http://www.boxingscene.com/?m=show&opt=printable&id=55729#ixzz22eMXdMns

By Ernest Gabion

Multiple sources have advised BoxingScene.com that Brandon Rios (30-0-1, 22KOs) and Mike Alvarado (33-0, 23KOs) have verbally agreed to face each other on October 13th at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California. The contracts have yet to be signed, but both fighters want it to happen. IBF/WBO super bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire will defend his titles in the second portion of the televised doubleheader.

Rios' trainer, Robert Garcia, believes his fighter will win by knockout.

"It's a great fight, it's the fight Brandon has been waiting for," Garcia told BoxingScene.com.

Rios is moving up to 140-pounds after winning a controversial twelve round decision over Richard Abril in April. Rios failed to make weight for the fight and looked physically spent in the days leading up to the official weigh-in. In Alvarado he faces one of the most dangerous and most avoided fighters at 140-pounds.

I aint making a "month of August" thread cuz it's a whack as month.

Deontay Wilder looked good last night, winning by first round KO. He's 24-0 (24 KO's) now against all bums, but I see improvement. He was working behind his insanely long jab (84" reach) to set up his shots. His power seems legit.

Grady Brewer won by DQ as his Vampire opponent tried to suck his blood

Report and photo by Jose E. Santiago

Former Contender series star Grady Brewer (30-14, 16 KOs) won by fifth round disqualification over Giorbis Barthelemy (25-10-2, 10 KOs) in a bout for the IBO Inter-Continental jr. middleweight title on Saturday night at the Cobb Galleria Center in Atlanta, Georgia. After a quick start by Barthelemy in the first two rounds, he capitalized his success with a straight left that dropped Grady in the third. Grady responded well to being dropped by increasing his aggressiveness. In the fourth is when things got weird. As Grady moved forward trying to land haymakers Barthelemy used an illegal hand swipe to Grady’s legs that dropped the Contender series champ. After getting deducted a point for his illegal tactic in the fourth Bathelemy, it only went downhill from there. In the fifth, during a clinch, Barthelemy locked into Grady’s neck with a vicious bite. After realizing the transaction referee Brian Stutts immediately disqualified Barthelemy.

Donaire vs Nishioka, Rios vs Alvarado Official For Oct. 13 on HBO

In what is surely one of the best televised double-headers in recent memory, Top Rank has finalized an October 13 card on HBO that will feature a 122-pound title unification bout between Nonito Donaire and Toshiaki Nishioka in the main event, and an on-paper Fight of the Year contender between Brandon Rios and Mike Alvarado in the co-feature.

Rios said last night that the fight with Alvarado was basically a done deal, but now RingTV.com is reporting that the expected card is truly set, with Bob Arum saying the show is ready to go.

Star-divide

If you have something bad to say about this show, you're an even crazier cynic than I am, which is probably not good for you and you might want to seek therapy or something, because frankly I don't believe you'll ever be happy in life, no matter what. I mean, listen, I don't know you all that well, but jeez...

Where were we? Ah, this double-header. Donaire (29-1, 18 KO) has gone 2-0 this year, beating Wilfredo Vazquez Jr and Jeffrey Mathebula to pick up the WBO and IBF super bantamweight titles. Nishioka (39-4-3, 24 KO) has the WBC emeritus or super platinum title or something, and last fought in October of 2011, beating Rafael Marquez in Las Vegas.

The 36-year-old Nishioka is not at his peak powers anymore, I don't believe, but he's a damn sight from being shot, and the clever veteran boxer remains the most accomplished fighter in the division. Donaire beating him really is Donaire taking down the guy who deserves to be called King at 122 right now. Nishioka scoring the win proves that the King isn't ready to give up the throne just yet. It's a compelling fight, and should be high-level stuff.

We talked about Rios-Alvarado last night. I pretty much expect that one to be like Mastodon's "Blood and Thunder": The Fight.

Mayweather could have problems making 147 in the future
August 4th, 2012

By Chris Williams: With Floyd Mayweather Jr. putting on weight to fight WBA junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto recently and with the size that he put on during his two month jail stint at the Clark County Detention Center in Las Vegas, Mayweather could find it next to impossible for him to fight at 147 lbs in the future.

This could hurt Mayweather for fights against the likes of Manny Pacquiao, Andre Berto and Amir Khan. Other than those three guys, there’s really no one besides them that are really worth fighting. Mayweather appears to have packed on some muscle during his two months behind bars and he probably did a lot of push ups in his small single man cell.

Those muscles are going to make it difficult for Mayweather to get back down to 147 for his next fight, if that’s the weight that he was planning on fighting at. It would be much better for Mayweather to keep his size and focus on facing WBC junior middleweight champion Saul Alvarez in December. Mayweather needs to get that fight out of the way first, and then look to take on Sergio Martinez if he gets past WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. on September 15th.

Mayweather likely won’t have much of a chance at fighting Pacquiao next year anyway with the Filipino still wanting parity in terms of the money split. Perhaps another loss for Pacquiao will change his tune about that subject once he faces Juan Manuel Marquez or Tim Bradley again. If Mayweather does get the fight with Pacquiao, he needs to force him to fight at a catchweight of 150 lbs so that Mayweather doesn’t have to drop too much weight to make the fight happen. We don’t want Mayweather to wind up like Oscar De La Hoya did when he tried to drop down from 154 to fight Pacquiao at 147.

Dawson: I’m going to out-box Andre Ward
August 4th, 2012

By Dan Ambrose: Chad Dawson (31-1, 17 KO’s) doesn’t see anything in WBA/WBC super middleweight champion Andre Ward’s game that worries him as the two fighters slowly approach their September 8th fight together at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, California. Dawson says he only see a fighter that mainly fights on the inside and he doesn’t plan on playing into that game.

In an interview with ESPN on Friday, Dawson said “I know Andre Ward likes to be on the inside. He likes to rough guys up on the inside. People say he’s an all around fighter. I don’t see that. I see him on the inside wanting to trade punches…I plan to use my superior boxing skills, outbox him and win the fight that way. The guys he’s been fighting haven’t been working behind the jab; they haven’t used boxing skills to try and beat him. They’re fighting his game plan.”

To be fair, Ward forces his opponents to fight his game plan by charging them and getting in close and using his strength to stay there. It’s not because his opponents want to fight on the inside, but rather they’re forced to. It’ll take a special performance from Dawson to prevent Ward from doing that to nim on September 8th, because Ward has a very quick move when he collapses inward to take the fight to the inside. Dawson has the benefit of never having let a previous opponent fight him in close for any length of time. Dawson, 6’2″, is tall and has very long arms that he uses to push his shorter opponents away when they try and force an inside war against him.

Ward may have problems if Dawson is able to push him off and reestablish outside control of the fight. Ward isn’t as good of a boxer as Dawson, and he’s not nearly as effective as Dawson is on the outside. Ward has a good jab but he’s not someone that can dominate a fighter like Dawson if the fight goes to the outside. The reason for that is Dawson’s 5 1/2 reach advantage over Ward. That’s going to allow him to jab away at Ward without getting hit all that often. It’s crucial for Ward to take the fight to the inside, because if he can’t do that on a consistent basis then he’s going to lose the fight.

sweet. Donaire vs Nishioka is way better than Arce. Glad Arce priced himself out.
Im not so sure its a better fight. I do think both are good fights either way but Nishioka is still suspect in my book but well see what he has now that he is facing Donaire. Atleast we know Arce is a brawler with heart and could easily pull an upset as he has in the past. Got Em!!

any brawler will lose easily to donaire. donaire likes guys to come to him so he can set up his shots. its only when donaire has to chase guys around does he struggle a little bit or at least put on subpar performances.

anyways its a far better fight Nishioka is the #1 fighter in the division.

arce has a bigger name (in America) and it probably would have been more fan friendly since donaire would brutally knock him out, but Nishioka means more since he's ranked as the top dog.

MERCITO WHO? BRONER UNIMPRESSED WITH GESTA'S PERFORMANCE
By Ben Thompson | August 05, 2012

When asked if he had heard that undefeated lightweight contender Mercito Gesta called him out this past Friday, former super featherweight champion Adrien Broner replied, "Who?" According to Broner, who will be making his lightweight debut on October 6th against an opponent to be announced, Gesta has yet to accomplish anything to warrant a showdown. "He just fought for what, $7500? $12,500 at the most? I just gave up $81,000 my last fight. Tell him to go get some money and come see me then," Broner explained.

While Broner did admit that he tuned in to the ESPN Friday Night Fights broadcast, he also said that he was so unimpressed with Gesta's performance that it put him to sleep and he was unaware that his name was even mentioned during the telecast. "This little Filipino dude, man, he's not impressive at all. There's nothing special about him," Broner continued. "I went to sleep about the 3rd round. It was not exciting to me. I went to sleep on the fight. So after the fight, he called me out?"

ADRIEN BRONER: "I'M READY TO GO DUCK HUNTING"
By Ben Thompson | August 06, 2012

"I'm ready to go duck hunting and there's going to be a lot of ducks out there after I'm done beating these dudes...I'ma be at 140 real soon. I just want to clean out 135. You know, clean up, get some easy money, because I make it look easy anyway, and then jump to 40 and see who's going to fight me then. Every time I go up, they go up another weight class. There comes a time to where all these people gotta stop going up in weight and we gotta see each other, man. They can keep running, but they finna run into a closet with one way in and one way out," stated former super featherweight champion Adrien Broner, who talked about his move up to lightweight, his future plans and much more. Check it out!

BT: What's poppin' with you Twin?

AB: What's happenin' Ben?

BT: Same ol', same ol'. Did you hear Gesta trying to call you out the other night?

AB: Who?

BT: Mercito Gesta; the dude who just fought on Friday Night Fights.

AB: That short Filipino? That on-ESPN fighting, little-bitty motherfucker? He just fought for what, $7500? $12,500 at the most? I just gave up $81,000 my last fight. Tell him to go get some fuckin' money and come see me then.

BT: (Laughing) Damn.

AB: This little Filipino dude, man, he's not impressive at all. There's nothing special about him.

BT: I was actually kind of shocked that he mentioned your name after the fight.

AB: So he called me out after? Because I went to sleep on his fuckin' fight. I went to sleep about the 3rd round. It was not exciting to me. I went to sleep on the fight. So after the fight, he called me out?

BT: Yep. He said he wanted Adrien Broner next.

AB: You know what it is? Everybody know if they fight me, they gonna get that big paycheck; that's one. And Ben, you know, I mean, I did the same thing when I was climbing up the ladder and trying to get to where I'm at. I respect it, you know? A lot of people are going to call me out right now.

BT: Of course. Everybody wants to go to where the money is at.

AB: Exactly, because they ain't getting no money. Ain't nobody giving out no paydays. They don't get no paydays. Niggas like me and Floyd and Pacquiao; that's it.

BT: Speaking of Floyd and Manny, people compare Gesta to Manny, kind of like they compare you to Floyd, so some say that fight might look a little like Floyd vs. Manny.

AB: Yeah, he tries to fight just like Manny, man. I'd put that nigga out. And then, look, you know what they're going to say when I put him out. "Oh, he was naturally bigger." You know they're never going to give me my credit. And then, he ain't shit, so why would I fight him? He ain't nothin'. He ain't did nothin', he ain't won nothin'; it's a lose-lose for me.

BT: So what's it looking like on October 6th? Any names been floated your way yet?

AB: Man, I don't care. Hey, I'm ready to go duck hunting and there's going to be a lot of ducks out there after I'm done beating these dudes.

BT: (Laughing) I mean, I know you'll fight anyone, but realistically, Brandon Rios is with Top Rank, so you know that fight ain't happening, Marquez is hoping to face Manny, so you know he ain't trying to fight you, and DeMarco is fighting Molina in September, so that ain't happening any time soon either. You may have to move up to 140 sooner than expected just to find some names you can face.

AB: I'ma be at 140 real soon. They can keep running, but they finna run into a closet with one way in and one way out. They gonna be trapped in the closet like R. Kelley.

FLOYD MAYWEATHER RELEASED FROM JAIL

August 3rd, 2012 By Pedro Fernandez

“PRETTY BOY” FLOYD RETURNS TO NORMAL LIFE

"Freed" Floyd Mayweahter

San Francisco, CA- As I indicated prior, Floyd Mayweather Jr. was released at midnight August 3, 2012, this after checking into the worst hotel in Las Vegas, the Clark County Jail on June 1 for a Domestic Violence offense. Now Floyd can go back to doing what he does best, humiliate fighters with his superior skill set. Manny Pacquiao has clearly proved in his last two, if not three fights that he doesn’t belong in the same zip code, let alone a boxing ring with the more talented Mayweather. Although Floyd is disliked by many, that can be attributed to the fact he plays the “villain” so darn well!

MAYWEATHER WAS SENTENCED TO 90 DAYS IN THE SLAMMER!

Originally sentenced to 90 days in custody, this after a skirmish with the mother of his two children last year, Mayweather was supposed to spend 57 days in hail, but somehow his jail term was increased to 63 days. Housed in solitary confinement for 23 hours a day, with one hour outside of a 9 x 12 cell that is a far cry from his Las Vegas mansion. Floyd moaned about the water, the solitary confinement, the food, for the first three weeks all he did was pitch a bitch!

ONLY “BIG MONEY” FIGHT IS WITH ALVAREZ

With Pacquiao looking ordinary, if not old of late, Mayweather would probably make the most money by taking on fellow 154 lb. counterpart (WBC) Saul Alvarez, seeing Mayweather has the WBA laurels. After Alvarez dumps Josesito Lopez in September

I haven’t spoken to anybody from Amir Khan’s camp” – Emanuel Steward

Following his disastrous loss to Danny Garcia last month at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, there are still a lot of lingering questions that Amir Khan has to eventually answer.

Khan was stopped inside of four rounds by Garcia after being leveled by a wicked left hook from the Philadelphia fighter in the third round and saw the contest waved off a frame later after suffering two more knockdowns.

In the wake of the defeat, it still remains to be seen whether or not Khan will remain with his trainer Freddie Roach. Khan has seemed to go back and forth on the issue a bit and recently revealed that several trainers have reached out to him, perhaps the most noteworthy being Emanuel Steward.

Speaking to SkySports, Khan would issue the following.

“I've had so many trainers approach me in the past week. Steward is the main one who's approached me. Many trainers have said they can make me into a big, unbeatable fighter. It's all about taking my time on this; it's a big decision to make. I'm still with Freddie at the moment, but in a week's time things might change. It's all about seeing who might suit my style, who might help me on my offense, who might help me on my defense.”

BONUS PHOTOS: A closer look at Mercito Gesta's thrilling stoppage over Ty Barnett this weekend in Las Vegas

Curious for Steward’s take on the matter, I touched bases with the Kronk trainer over the weekend.

“I have no comment on that,” Steward would state. “I haven’t spoken to anybody from Amir Khan’s camp. I never called anyone; I’ve never spoke to anyone. I have no knowledge of anything.”

Steward presently works with the likes of unified heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko, IBF junior middleweight champion Cornelius ‘K9’ Bundrage, and middleweight contender Andy Lee. Balancing his duties as a trainer with his role as an analyst for HBO and just having seen his core group of fighters have bouts in the past few months, Steward insists he is simply enjoying some down time at the moment.

“That’s the truth,” Steward would claim. “I’m just taking a break right now.”

Arum interested in Pacquiao-Cotto rematch, thinks he can make it happen at 150 catchweight
August 6th, 2012

By Chris Williams: Top Rank promoter Bob Arum is very interested in matching his fighter Manny Pacquiao (54-4-2, 38 KO’s) against either Miguel Cotto (37-3, 30 KO’s) or Juan Manuel Marquez (54-6-1, 39 KO’s) in rematches.

Although boxing fans have already seen Pacquiao fight and beat both guys before, Arum likes the idea of putting Pacquiao back in with both of them because of the high interest that the fights would bring.

Arum told ESPN “Cotto brings a huge fan base from Puerto Rico…We could do a Cotto rematch, assuming we could come to an understanding on the weight…I think Manny would be willing to do it at 150 [catchweight].”

So there it is. Arum looks to be revealing his hand in who he wants Pacquiao to fight.

Pacquiao already had a chance to fight a rematch against Cotto earlier this year, but wouldn’t agree to fight Cotto at a catch weight of 150 lbs. Of course, Cotto wasn’t going to drain himself to go all the way down to 147 to accommodate Pacquiao after having already done him a favor by fighting the Filipino at a catchweight of 145 pounds in 2009 when Cotto was the WBO welterweight champion. Cotto was the one that had to sacrifice for that catchweight, so it’s understandable that he wouldn’t want to have to make second sacrifice by boiling down all the way to 147.

Arum has got his work cut out for him if he’s going to try and convince Pacquiao to move up in weight slightly to make the fight with Cotto. I don’t think he’ll do it. Cotto at 150 pounds is a much more dangerous fighter than he was when he fought a faster Pacquiao at a catchweight handicap of 145 lbs three years ago. Pacquiao has slowed down since then and he’s a lot more vulnerable now, as we saw in his loss to Bradley.

Tim Bradley (29-0, 12 KO’s), who just beat Pacquiao last June, remains an option for Pacquiao but one can sense that he’s not someone that Arum is particularly excited about putting back in there with his #1 money fighter Pacquiao. It’s understandable from the money standpoint because Bradley won’t bring in the same kind of cash that Marquez and Cotto would in fights against Pacquiao, but you have to wonder if Arum is worried that Bradley may have Pacquiao’s number and could bring him down with his movement.

Pacquiao already lost to Bradley once, but a second loss would likely hurt Pacquiao in terms of future earnings. It might be too risky for Arum to put his cash cow Pacquiao back in with Bradley at this point.

Nishioka is a great fight for Donaire. If Nishioka wins he's a big name now, and Donaire will finally fight a skilled number 1 ranked boxer his own size. Donaire is still scared of Rigo. lol I'm so happy that they made this fight. FYI, I think this is the last fight of Donaire's Top Rank contract, you know how Bob loves to match you tuff before your contract is up.

So, another catch weight huh...
It's a little ridiculous to fight almost all of your big fights at a catch weight.
Just pick a division....
If I understood that column.....it was saying Arum was interested in the fight at Catch weight. Not Manny.

and really if Cotto agree's to fight Manny at a catch weight, how can you blame Manny??

It's not Manny's fault at all but at the same time it's funny that Manny needs weight advantages against all of his big fight. ODLH didn't make 147lb in 12 years, Cotto at 145lb for his 147lb title, Margarito at 150lb for a bs 154lb title. Manny looked good in all those fights. But what about non-catch weight fights and fighter moving up to fight him how does Manny look? Manny couldn't finish old Mosley at 147lb, 135lb Marquez beat him up, and 140 lb Bradley took his belt. You see the pattern here. If no one has to kill themselves to make weight = Manny doesn't like all that good in the ring.
