By Dan Ambrose: In a move that leaves one scratching their head and wondering why, Golden Boy Promotions reportedly have chosen #10 IBF welterweight contender Josesito Lopez (29-4, 17 KO’s) to step in and fight former WBC welterweight champion Victor Ortiz (29-3-2, 22 KO’s) in the main event of the June 23rd card at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California. I see this as an ESPN2 level fight, not something that should be shown on Showtime.
Lopez, 27, will be replacing the well known former IBF/WBC welterweight champion Andre Berto, who allegedly tested positive for the steroid Nandrolone and won’t be able to take the fight with Ortiz. What makes Lopez such a poor choice, besides the fact that he’s not well known at all among casual boxing fans, is that Lopez is coming off of a loss in his last fight against Mayweather Promotions fighter Jesse Vargas last September. Of course, Ortiz also is coming off of a loss of his own on the same card in a 4th round TKO loss to Mayweather.
For a main event fight like this one you’d like to see Ortiz face someone well known, especially when the fight is being televised on Showtime. It’s one thing having one fighter coming off of a loss, but when you got BOTH fighters coming off of a loss and headlining a show that will be televised nationwide in the United States, that’s kind of a turn off. Of course, only the hardcore boxing fans will be aware of this fact. The casual fans won’t have a clue, but the casual also won’t have a clue who Lopez is, and I can’t imagine this fight bringing in good ratings or anything close to good ratings. I think Golden Boy would have been better off canceling the entire card if this is the best they can come up with.

I think they need o flip the card around and make the co-feature between Lucas Matthysse and Humberto Soto the main event and have the Ortiz vs. Lopez as the co-feature, because that’s the kind of fight I see this.
Lopez isn’t even a welterweight. He’s been fighting at 140, and I wasn’t impressed at all in seeing him lose to a limited fighter in Jesse Vargas last September. He looked like a decent fringe contender at best, but that’s about it. Why couldn’t actual welterweight be found to face Ortiz rather than Lopez? It just reeks of a mismatch in size, power and ability. Lopez isn’t a huge puncher and is more of a volume guy. He’s going to get run over in this fight.

Jermain Taylor Accused of Rape, No Charges Filed Yet

Police in Arkansas are investigating a case in which a woman says she met with Jermain Taylor to have sex with him for money, but ended up getting raped, according to the Arkansas News Bureau.
Taylor, 33, has not been arrested nor charged with any crime. The woman was taken into police custody on suspicion of possession of a controlled substance, the report said.
Officers arriving at a hotel in the city of Maumelle on Friday night were told by the 27-year-old woman that “she had gone to the hotel for the purpose of having sex with Taylor for money, and that they began arguing. She told officers she became frightened during the argument and fled, and in doing so she fell down a flight of stairs and injured her ankle,” the article said.
After arriving at the hospital, she said she’d been raped.
Though police didn’t find Taylor at the hotel, its manager “confirmed that the boxer had been at the establishment, but left before officers arrived,” the article said.

Marquez is a legend and all but he's kinda acting like a hoe. He just pulled out of the July 14th card at Cowboys stadium. His reasoning is he can't find a southpaw to prepare for a possible pacquaio fight in the future. He turned down Brandon Rios, Zab Judah & Eric Morales. He wanted to fight Gesta but Top Rank wouldn't approve it, as obviously a PPV card and a big event at Cowboys stadium would be a big flop with Gesta as a headliner, plus JMM wants around $2-$3.5 million for this fight so the money just isn't there with a subpar opponent.
What the hell does JMM need a southpaw to "prepare" for pacquiao? It's not like he didn't already go through 36 rounds with Pac. Looks like JMM just want's an easy fight and doesn't want to risk anything, which is a shame cuz the past couple months have been nothing but let downs (besides cotto-floyd). By Dan Ambrose: According to the latest boxing news, WBO light welterweight interim champion Juan Manuel Marquez (54-6-1, 39 KO’s) will be fighting on either July 21st or the 28th against either Mercito Gesta (25-0-1, 13 KO’s) or Cesar Cuenca (42-0, 1 KO’s) in Mexico.
There had been a previous report by Dan Rafael of ESPN that the 38-year-old Marquez was planning on taking the summer off, but Marquez’s people are now saying that’s not the case. He plans on fighting in Mexico in late July.
Marquez had previously been penciled in to fight on July 14th at the Cowboys stadium in a pay-per-view fight, but that seems to be off the table for some reason. Erik Morales was an opponent mentioned as who Marquez would have been facing. However, Marquez wasn’t interested in taking the Morales fight because he wanted to face a southpaw opponent to get him ready for a 4th fight against WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao in late 2012.
The Morales fight would definitely help Marquez sell in a PPV bout, because a fight against Gesta or the little known Cuenca likely won’t interest casual fans because neither fighter is well known outside of the hardcore boxing fans.
Marquez has his mind made up that he wants to fight a southpaw to get him ready for Pacquiao. Marquez did this in the past when he took on and destroyed southpaw Likar Ramos by a 1st round knockout in July of last year to get ready for a fight against Pacquiao in November. At best, Ramos was only slightly helpful because he folded immediately in the 1st round. The only positive that Marquez got out of fighting Ramos was the months that he spent training with southpaws to get ready for the fight. The actual fight was useless in preparing Marquez for Pacquiao.
The same will likely apply for Marquez if he faces Gesta or Cuenca. Neither fighter is anything like Pacquiao other than them being southpaws. Cuenca, 31, from Argentina, is painfully slow of hand and foot, and has zero power.
I can’t think of a worse fighter to get Marquez ready for Pacquiao than Cuena. Marquez might as well be facing a fighter with hand speed who fights out of the orthodox stance because that fighter would likely get him better prepared to fight Pacquiao than Cuenca.
Gesta isn’t even a welterweight, he fights at lightweight, and he’s a lot slower than Pacquiao. True, Gesta is a southpaw but he’s got none of Pacquiao’s abilities and it’s another wasted fight for Marquez. Gesta has only fought 2nd and 3rd tier opponents his entire career, which makes him useless in preparing for Pacquiao.

Arum said “You can’t argue with the guys [HBO] that spend the money.”
Obviously HBO saw in Mijares what I saw in him – a fighter that had already been exposed by Vic Darchinyan and Nehomar Cermeno in three consecutive losses in 2008 and 2009, but who hasn’t fought anyone really good since those three defeats.

By William Mackay: The German Boxing Board (BDB) has reportedly sided with the British Boxing Board of Control in condemning the planned July 14th non-title heavyweight fight between former WBA heavyweight champion David Haye and Dereck Chisora, according to the BBC.
The BDB joins with the World Boxing Council as well in opposing the Chisora-Haye fight. However, despite the negative reactions from the BBBofC, BDB and WBC, the Chisora vs. Haye fight is still steaming ahead and it looks very well like it will indeed take place on July 14th unless the BBBofC can get a court order to halt the fight from taking place. It’s unclear whether the BBBofC will be able to do this, because Chisora’s promoter has found the Luxembourg Boxing Federation to sanction the fight, and it appears that they have the ability to do this unless proven otherwise.
Chisora had his boxing license taken away for his part in a fist fight/wrestling match with Haye after the Chisora vs. Vitali Klitschko bout in Munich, Germany last February. The BBBofC responded by taking away Chisora’s boxing license for an indefinite time. They didn’t have to take Haye’s away, because he had already turned his license in when he retired not long ago. However, if he were to try and get his boxing license back with the BBBofC right now the chances would likely be poor that they would be returning it to him due to his fight with Chisora in Munich.

WBC junior middleweight beltholder Saul "Canelo" Alvarez will defend his belt against southpaw former two-time welterweight titleholder Paul Williams on Sept. 15 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on a network to be determined, Golden Boy Promotions President, Oscar De La Hoya, informed ******.com.
De La Hoya said that Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer will begin negotiations with HBO and Showtime for a spot on either of the cabel giants for the clash between Alvarez (40-0-1, 29 knockouts) and Williams (41-2, 27 KOs).
"I'm doing Canelo versus Paul Williams, and that's confirmed for Sept. 15. I'm on a mission to put on a spectacular event from top to bottom, and it's all done, baby. Sept. 15, and it's a go. I don't say that it's a done deal until it's a signed deal," said De La Hoya.
"So it will be live from the MGM in Las Vegas. It has no network yet. That's going to be up to my man, Richard Schaefer. So I'm going to have my man, Richard Schaefer, now deal with HBO and Showtime to see what he can come up with."
Alvarez, who is only 21, is coming off a unanimous decision over former titleholder Sugar Shane Mosley on May 5, and shares a victory over former welterweight beltholder Kermit Cintron with Williams.
"Canelo wants to keep fighting the best," said De La Hoya. "So this is David and Goliath, and, you know, my man, it's on."
Williams has split bouts with RING middleweight champ Sergio Martinez and former beltholder Carlos Quintana, and won a disputed majority decision over Erislandy Lara last year.
"Here you have Paul Williams, who is a very dangerous fighter who keeps coming, so it's going to be a dangerous fight," said De La Hoya.
"But I have all of the confidence in the world in Canelo that he will have another spectacular night against a very dangerous fighter in Paul Williams."
Now if Canelo beats Paul Williams sky is the limit for the 21 yr old man child, and he will be fighting Mayweather for sure..
