Pacquiao to give up WBC junior middleweight title – Boxing News

By Chris Williams: It’s no surprise that Manny Pacquiao (52-3-2, 38 KO’s) will not be choosing to defend his recently won World Boxing Council junior middleweight title and will instead be reportedly vacating the belt after having beaten fellow Top Rank stable fighter Antonio Margarito for the strap in November of last year to capture the vacant title.

Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum doesn’t want Pacquiao fighting the bigger junior middleweights because of the damage that he took in the Margarito fight, even though Margarito is hardly what you would call a junior middleweight. He’s fought pretty much his entire career at junior middleweight with the exception of a couple of fights.

Arum might as well have said that Pacquiao can’t fight welterweights anymore as well, because that’s what Margarito has been during his career. He did weigh more than Pacquiao during the fight, but the weight didn’t help him because his hand speed and foot movement were too poor for him to land with any consistency.

Shortly before Pacquiao fought for the title, the WBC suddenly pushed Margarito to the number #1 spot, despite the fact that he had fought only once at that weight in the past six years he defeated fringe contender Roberto Garcia in May of 2010. It seemed very convenient that the WBC then pushed Margarito to number #1, and thus putting him in the position to fight fellow Top Rank stable fighter Pacquiao for the vacant title. It was interesting to see Margarito ranked over top junior middleweights like Vanes Martirosyan, Alfredo Angulo and Kermit Cintron shortly before the Pacquiao fight took place.

Pacquiao is facing 39-year-old Shane Mosley on May 7th at the MGM Grand, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Mosley looks totally shot and went life and death with Sergio Mora in his last fight in September last year, and had to settle for a gift draw. This is an easy fight for Pacquiao and another case of good match-making in picking out the faded Mosley to fight. Boxing fans will be really impressed with Pacquiao in this fight.

HBO to show Khan-McCloskey along with Berto-Ortiz

By Chris Williams: HBO has decided to show the match-up between WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan (24-1, 17 KO’s) and his opponent EBU light welterweight champion Paul McCloskey (22-0, 12 KO’s) to boxing fans in the United States on April 16th at the M.E.N. Arena, in Manchester, England.

The McClosey-Khan fight will be paired with a match-up between WBC welterweight champion Andre Berto, who will be facing light welterweight Victor Ortiz in a fight that will be taking place in the United States.

According to Dan Rafael of ESPN, the Khan vs. McCloskey fight will be televised on a same-day tape in the U.S, while it will be shown live on Sky Sports on pay-per-view.

Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer is excited about the Khan-McCloskey match-up, saying “Amir is back. The ‘King’ is back. It’s his homecoming, his first fight at home in over 12 months. He is excited to take on an undefeated fighter in Paul McCloskey. He is looking forward to the showdown. I am still working with [Berto promoter] Lou DiBella to finalize the live fight from the U.S., Berto-Ortiz. It will be a great night of boxing.”

I don’t know about the Khan-McCloskey working out to be a great night of boxing, because that one appears to be a mismatch and few people in the United States will have heard of or care about McCloskey. However, the Berto-Ortiz fight might be interesting if Ortiz comes to fight and not run away like he did in his fight with Lamont Peterson.

Atlas slams HBO for guaranteeing the Alexander-Bradley loser a fight on their network

By Jason Kim: ESPN analyst Teddy Atlas slammed HBO on Friday’s ESPN telecast for guaranteeing the loser of last week’s light welterweight fight between champions Timothy Bradley and Devon Alexander a fight on their network and a huge $1.25 million payday.

What ultimately happened in that fight was that Alexander was cut from a couple of headbutts and instead of fighting through the pain and the blood, Alexander complained that his head stung and hurt from a head butt in the 10th. The fight was then stopped at that point by the referee.

Atlas had this to say about HBO’s decision to give Alexander, the loser, another shot on their network: “I think that’s absurd. I don’t understand what people at HBO, and I guess they’re smarter than me, but I don’t understand what the big shots, there are doing when they give something in the contract that tells the fight that if you lose, you’re going to get a million dollar fight on our network, and another fight in our network if you lose. I’ve never heard of something like that. To me, it’s not good business sense. To me, again, they’re smarter than me, but it doesn’t make sense. Would you tell your children that it you don’t clean up your room, you’re still going to get your allowance? Do you think those shirts would be picked up off the floor? Again, I’m confused with the big shots at HBO making a deal with a fighter, saying ‘You lose, don’t worry about it. You’ll be back on air. You’ll get plenty of money.”

Atlas has a point. HBO shouldn’t have guaranteed the loser to be able to fight on their network because it set up a situation where Alexander, the loser, didn’t have to fight through the pain and was still able to get a shot to fight again with HBO. In hindsight, it seems like a bad move because Alexander looked poor in that fight and also looked poor in his previous fight against Andriy Kotelnik. Now HBO will be paying him big money for a fight that may turn out to be just as disappointing as Alexander’s fights with Bradley and Kotelnik.

Way to take a step back Khan.
What a let down...

Khan: McCloskey fight is on
what's sad is it was going to be Junior Witter, but HBO luckily turned it down.

It also looks like team Khan, or father of amir khan who handles the finances, is a big penny pincher. Lamont Peterson was the front runner, but they wanted to only give him 200k.

On top of this, they fired Alex Ariza. Ariza said team Khan never paid him for his work for the Maidana fight, and Amir's dad says they don't owe him anything, stating they pay freddie roach. But the fighter is always responsible for paying the conditioning coach, etc.

So it looks like Khan is headed towards the path of Prince Nazim, who had the same problem (family ran his finances which prevented him from fighting a lot of guys).

"I don't always pay conditioning coaches....

But when I do, I do it cheap!"

Floyd Mayweather Jr! The man you love to hate

By Dan Henderson: Pretty boy Floyd is my favourite boxer of all time but I won’t let that cloud my judgment. I want to write a fair argument so I’m not accused of not being biased. I know there is many people who disagree with me because I’ve seen many articles and comments saying he has cherry picked and took easy options and at times I completely agree but tell me a boxer who hasn’t at times taking the so called easy option.

He won his first world title after only 18 fights when he captured the WBC featherweight against Genaro Hernandez. For me, I like knockouts as much as the next man but it’s the way he boxes the defensive displays the way he has the shoulder roll to perfection. He can dominate fighters in a way no other can look at the fight against Arturo Gatti he absolutely outclassed him for 6 rounds.

People often criticize his choice of fights and at times I have questioned his choices to but as I said he is not the only fighter to take easy bouts but he has fought his fair share of greats and he has won every fight some more controversial than others but every top fighter gets gift decisions.

A lot of people hate Mayweather I can understand why people hate him because he is cocky he is arrogant but he has every right to be as he is that good. Whether you hate him or love him you all still buy the PPV to watch him either lose or win so he still making a lot of money.
At the end of the day we all have to agree whether you love him or hate him boxing would be gutted not to have had him to light up the sport of boxing

Adamek vs. McBride on 4/23 at the Prudential Center, in New Jersey

KO’s) has decided to be extra careful in his next fight by taking on 37-year-old journeyman Kevin McBride (35-8-1, 29 KO’s) in a 12 round bout on April 23rd at the Prudential Center, in Newark, New Jersey. Adamek, 34, has a scheduled fight against one of the Klitschko brothers in September in Poland, and Adamek doesn’t want to blow his big chance at a big payday by taking on anyone good and maybe getting knocked out or beaten.

By choosing the 6’6″ McBride, Adamek is killing two birds with one stone because he’ll be getting someone who is about the same height as IBF/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko and his brother WBC heavyweight champ Vitali Klitschko, and at the same time, McBride won’t be a danger to beat him because he’s not fighting all that well at this point in his career. McBride has lost four out of his last five fights and looked terrible in each of them.

Even in his prime, McBride was a B level fighter at best. He does have a 6th round stoppage win over Mike Tyson in June 2005, but that was a totally shot Tyson, not the prime version. McBride basically mugged Tyson in that fight, bulling him to the ropes and just leaning on him and throwing short punches. Tyson didn’t have the stamina to get off the ropes and was stopped in the final fight of his career. McBrdie had never beaten a quality fighter before or since, even though Tyson was far from his best at that point. Indeed, McBride has won only two fights since the Tyson victory in 2005, which makes the choice of McBride even more baffling for Adamek.

It isn’t as if Adamek has faced mostly quality fighters since moving up to the heavyweight division in 2009. Adamek has faced the following heavyweights: Andre Golota, Jason Estrada, Chris Arreola, Michael Grant and Vinny Maddalone. With the exception of Arreola, who injured his left hand in the fight, Adamek has taken a very easy route to get a title shot against the Klitschkos. And he’s taking an even easier route in his tune-up fight with McBride. It’s hard to really respect Adamek as a serious heavyweight contender because he seems to have taken the back door to a title shot rather than going through tough contenders that might beat him.

V. Klitschko: Haye is a Coward, Clown, Avoiding Chagaev

By Ruslan Chikov

WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko (41-2, 38KOs) has lashed out at David Haye, the WBA's champion. Klitschko says Haye (25-1, 23KOs) is trying to avoid a fight with his mandatory challenger, Ruslan Chagaev (27-1-1, 17 KOs). Vitali is claiming that Haye's team is using Chagaev's medical condition to avoid the fight. The 32-year-old Uzbek suffers from Hepatitis B.

Vitali brings up how his younger brother Wladimir had a simple shot from a medical physician and went forward with a June 2009 fight with Chagaev, which Wladimir won by knockout. The British Boxing Board is reviewing Chagaev's medical records and plan to issue a decision this week.

"First, Haye has signed a contract for a fight with Wladimir, but later escaped like a coward. Thus he placed us in a difficult position because of the the minimum amount of time that we had to pick a new opponent for my brother. As a result, Wladimir then went into the ring against Ruslan Chagaev. The same Chagaev who Haye doesn't want to fight right now and continues to talk about his disease. Meanwhile, Wladimir fought with him without any problems," Klitschko told Daily Sport.

"Haye had a fight with me, but at the last minute broke away and David signed a contract to fight with Nikolai Valuev. He fled from the fights with us, but we're still trying to put ourselves in good lights. What can I say, he's a clown."

Luis Concepcion is Gored By a Bull, Hospitalized

By Jhonny Gonzalez

According to reports in Panama, the flyweight champion of the WBA, Panama's Luis 'El Nica' Concepcion (22-1, 17KOs), was gored by a bull over the weekend during a race in Feria de la Candelaria, in the western town of Bugaba, about 600 miles west of the capital. One report says he was was gored in the buttocks and remains hospitalized in the town bordering Costa Rica. But another report says the right thigh was the injured area.

The boxer's attorney, Rogelio Espino, complained about the discipline of the athlete because he did not attend last Friday's training session with the excuse that he had to travel to the western province of Chiriqui, where Bugaba is, to visit a family member with health problems. One report said Concepcion made a wrong manuever and that led to the bull's attack.

"This frustrates the negotiations for an upcoming fight in defense of his title," said Espino.

Klitschko: Either Haye Fights Me on July 2, Or It's Dead!

By Mark Vester

WBO/IBO/IBF heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko (55-3, 49KOs) is still willing to fight WBA champion David Haye (25-1, 23KOs) on July 2. Klitschko is already set to face unbeaten Dereck Chisora on April 30 and former two-division champion Tomasz Adamek in September. Klitschko doesn't care if the fight happens in Germany or England, he just wants to get Haye in the ring.

If Haye refuses to fight him in July, then Klitschko doesn't want to hear any more chatter about a possible fight with Haye in the future. He will ignore Haye from that point forward.

"I know the British fans are looking forward to this fight and I am looking forward to actually satisfying the British fans and fight David Haye. I'm right here and I'm confirming that July 2 as I've said before is the date for the fight. Either David Haye takes it or the whole thing is dead." Klitschko told BBC Sport.

Maidana says he still hasn’t been offered a fight with Alexander but wants to fight h

By Dan Ambrose: Light welterweight Marcos Maidana (29-2, 27 KO’s) says he hasn’t been offered a fight against former WBC light welterweight champion Devon Alexander (21-1, 13 KO’s), but Maidana wants to fight him if possible. Alexander’s trainer recently said that they would like to face Maidana in the summer in June or July, but the fight will have to wait until the cuts that Alexander sustained in the Timothy Bradley fight heal. Alexander was badly sliced up by Bradley’s head during the fight and is going to need a lot of time for the cuts to heal up properly.

Speaking on his twitter account, Maidana said “Was never offered a fight with Alexander as of yet. I’d love to face him though.”

Maidana would have to be considered a favorite if this fight with Alexander gets made. It’s up to HBO if they want to pair Maidana with Alexander. They’ll likely do just that, because they reportedly gave Alexander a huge money guarantee for another fighter at the time they signed Alexander up for the Bradley fight. In hindsight, it might not have been the smartest thing to do because Alexander has turned out to be a less than thrilling fighter to watch in his last couple of fights.

HBO might have spent their money better on putting arguably more exciting fighters on the network. There are a number of them that would seem to be more appealing choices if HBO is concerned about keeping boxing fans entertained rather than bored out of their minds, like many fans were when watching Bradley vs. Alexander.

In that case, Maidana might be better used to match him against Lucas Matthysse, the once beaten Argentinean knockout artist. That would seem to be a much better use of Maidana than to put him in with a fighter that back peddles all night long like Alexander. HBO might need to consider cutting their losses with him and moving on. What good is it to show fighters that are dull to watch even if they win?

This will be a gud fight, I still feel maidana is very under rated, I think he is the number 2 fighter in the division. People talk about khan maidana and bradley alexander as bieng a semi final, I think its wrong… The final was khan vs maidana. We need more maidanas in boxing! Maidana vs khan II I’m gonna be in vegas!

Maiadan Vs Matthysse would be a great line up. They last fought behind closed doors for the chance to fight for argentina with maidana getting the decision. An all argentine mash up!!

Soto and Antillon to battle it out on Pacquiao-Mosley undercard on 5/7

By Jason Kim: World Boxing Council (WBC) lightweight champion Humberto Soto (54-7-2, 32 KO’s) and Urbano Antillon (28-2, 20 KO’s) will go at it once again on the undercard of the Manny Pacquiao vs. Shane Mosley bout on May 7th at the MGM Grand, in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Soto and Antillon previously fought in last December, with Soto winning a narrow 12 round unanimous decision by the judges’ scores of 115-112, 114-113 and 114-113. It was a closely fought bout with the action going back and forth. Soto ended up prevailing in perhaps the most exciting fight of 2010.

This fight is a much better match-up in terms of competitive talent than the Pacquiao vs. Mosley fight, which figures to be a hopeless mismatch. Hopefully Antillon-Soto will be just as exciting as the previous fight and it may end up saving what could be a very dull night filled with mismatches.

Antillon’s nose was damaged in the Soto fight and it’s still healing, but he should be ready to go by May 7th for what could be another very exciting fight.

Junior Witter: Amir Khan vs Paul McCloskey is Ridiculous!

By Mark Vester

Former WBC junior welterweight champion Junior Witter is not happy with Amir Khan finalizing a deal to defend his WBA 140-pound title against Paul McCloskey on April 16 at the MEN Arena in Manchester, England. Witter believed that his camp had reached a deal to face Khan on the April date. Witter, returns to the ring next month when he faces Victor Lupo in Canada, was ready to walk away from that fight in order to start preparing for Khan.

On Saturday Khan reached a deal to face McCloskey after their previuous negotiations had fallen apart. Witter claims they were nervous about his ability to make the division limit of 140-pounds. Witter is moving up to welterweight next month.

“It’s ridiculous. Their excuses were about me making the weight but it boils down to motivation. I haven’t got the motivation to box Joe Bloggs at light welterweight but Amir Khan would be different,” Witter told Bradford Telegraph and Arg

Ariza: Shah Khan is Letting His Teeth Get Away From Him

By Chris LaBate

Strength and conditioning coach Alex Ariza had a lot to say about Shah Khan, the father and business handler for WBA 140-pound champion Amir Khan. BoxingScene.com reported two weeks ago that Khan and Ariza had parted ways over money. Ariza is claiming Team Khan owes him money for the training camp related to Khan's December fight with Marcos Maidana.

Shah came out in the press and said Amir's trainer, Freddie Roach, is in charge of paying Ariza. Roach himself has disputed Shah's statement. Shah claims there was never a contract with Ariza, which the conditioning coach disputes. Ariza has alleged that members of Team Khan stole his contract from his hotel room in the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. The incident was alleged to have taken place during Khan-Maidana fight week.

"I think Shah is letting his teeth get away from him when he's talking about the business side of things, as far as what Freddie and I do or how the deal was set up with me and Amir. Freddie doesn't pay me. That's not his responsibility. I have the same deal with Amir as I do with Manny [Pacquiao], [Julio Cesar] Chavez Jr. and Vanes [Martirosyan]," during an interview with Suge Green of OnTheGrind Boxing Radio.

"They have a habit of putting things off. Finally it was the week of the Maidana fight and I still didn't have a signed contract, so I had to have Amir sign it that week. As I said, they then broke into my hotel room and stole not only that contract, but my contract with Manny, Chavez Jr. and who knows what else. Then on Monday, Shah calls Freddie and says that I made Amir sign a contract two hours before the fight. I don't know if he just likes lying or that comes from what his past living was. Freddie knows that I would never do that."

"I think [manager] Asif [Vali] shoud stick to running the cab company and I think Shah should stick to hustling for fares and finding the long way to the airport and leave the boxing to the boxing guys. I think they ultimately hurt the fighter because everyone knows what I bring to the table."

Alexander Povetkin in Position To Fight David Haye

By Ruslan Chikov

Olympic gold medal winner Alexander Povetkin (21-0, 15KOs) is now in position to fight David Haye (25-1, 23KOs) on May 21 at the O2 Arena in London. The WBA has appointed Povetkin to the number two position in their latest rankings. The sanctioning organization has ordered Haye to face the mandatory, Ruslan Chagaev, who is seated at number one in the rankings. Chagaev's Hepatitis B status may prevent a possible fight with Haye. The British Board is reviewing Chagaev's medical records. The involved parties expect a decision this week. If Chagaev is not approved to fight in the UK, then the WBA will order the next available contender in the rankings and that would point directly to Povetkin.

According to The Ring, the Juan Manuel Marquez vs Erik Morales fight is OFF for April 9th. According to another source there are some problems with JMM and Golden Boy.

Richard Schaefer stated that Erik Morales will still be fighting on April 9th, and the name he really, really wants (for some reason) is Marcos Maidana. Schaefer says he's working on making it.

What's interesting about that is the WBA has made Amir Khan the "super champion" and the winner of Maidana vs Morales would be made the "regular champion" soooo that means we could in theory see a Khan vs Maidana rematch since Maidana would have the right to fight Khan. This I would assume be after Khan vs Bradley (if it happens).

Schaefer said he is “finalizing” a deal to have Robert Guerrero fight Michael Katsidis on the card. Also, a fight between Winky Wright and Matthew Macklin is confirmed
