Ricardo Mayorga Stops Michael Walker in Nine Rounds

By Chris LaBate

At the American Airlines Arena in Miami, Florida, former champion Ricardo Mayorga (29-7, 23KOs) stopped Michael Walker (19-6-3, 12KOs) in the ninth round. The contest was fought at a max weight of 162-pounds. It was Mayorga's first fight in over two years. Mayorga was last seen in September 2008 when Shane Mosley knocked him out at the twelfth round bell.

Mayorga looked very rusty at times and allowed Walker to outwork him. Plenty of the usual showboating by Mayorga. He allowed Walker to land punches more than a few times as he laughed and played up the shots to the crowd.

Mayorga did some decent work to the body to slow Walker down in the late rounds. Usually the one to come forward, Mayorga allowed Walker to take the lead while he countered with wild punches.

Early in the ninth round, Walker appeared to go down from a barrage of punches in the corner, but the ref took away a point from Mayorga for hitting Walker while he was down. Walker made it up but Mayorga followed up with another barrage of punches to force the stoppage.

Arum says Pacquiao has made his choice for his next opponent

Manny Pacquiao has supposedly made his choice for his next opponent on May 7th, and reportedly given that name to his promoter Bob Arum so that he can start the hard part of negotiating a fight with that fighter.

Let me guess who the fighters will be – Shane Mosley. It’s pretty clear that Pacquiao is likely going to pick whoever Arum chooses and Arum wants the 39-year-old Mosley, who currently is looking totally shot. Great pick, eh?

In an article by Michael Marley of examiner.com, Arum says “Manny made his pick, he gave me the name. But now I have to go make the best possible economic deal with that opponent. I’m not telling you or anyone else who it is. I will be back in the Top Rank office on Monday and I will got to work on to structure the right deal.” Manny has picked? I almost died laughing when I read that. Yeah, I bet Manny picked, but just by coincidence, it’s going to be Mosley.

In other words, Arum will put together a deal with Mosley and Pacquiao. What a terrible fight that will be. For some reason Pacquiao’s fans really like that choice. Every where I go, I see Pacquiao’s fans saying what a great pick Mosley will be for Pacquiao.

I don’t understand that, but maybe I’m looking at it from a different perspective. I look at fights and want the best possible fighters to go up against each other. I don’t care if I like a fighter or not. I don’t want to see mismatches and I especially don’t want to pay $50 or more to see them when it’s going to be a non-competitive fight. But, hey, that’s me.

Maybe I need to see it a different way. Like this is an easy fight for Pacquiao and he can pad his record with a named fighter without the danger of being knocked senseless in facing guys like Sergio Martinez, Andre Berto and Juan Manuel Marquez.

Yeah, I can see how it would be better for Pacquiao to fight Mosley rather than guys that would beat him. But as a fan, I would never want to see a mismatch, and I don’t care whether my favorite fighter had to take some shots and potentially lose. Seeing mismatches is for the birds, and paying to see them is even worse. But to each his own.

Roach: "Shane Mosley Will Be a Hard Fight For Pacquiao"

By Ronnie Nathanielsz

Trainer Freddie Roach supports Top Rank promoter Bob Arum’s contention that Shane Mosley is the best fight available for pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao in the absence of Floyd Mayweather Jr and says Pacquiao “has a couple of years left in him, easily.”

Roach told BoxingScene.com/Inquirer "styles make fights and Manny and Shane is a great fight and its a hard fight. You know Manny has speed but Mosley does also so you have too fast guys in there and he (Mosley) can give us a little trouble and he is experienced also."

Roach said Mosley is "a different type of fighter than Antonio Margarito and a much better boxer. Guys that come to Manny, he loves that. Shane will try to box him. He will come to him much more intelligently" than Margarito.

Roach said that “if Mayweather did come to the table, after beating him I would love to see Manny retire on that note but this guy is just playing games.”

Roach said he is convinced that Pacquiao is still getting better even as he took issue with those who have suggested that if he doesn’t fight Mayweather, Pacquiao should retire.

The celebrated trainer remarked, “why should he retire? He is in his prime. He just fought the best fight of his life (against Antonio Margarito.)”

Roach conceded that Margarito hurt Pacquiao “a couple of times” in their November 13 WBC light middleweight title fight but that was because Margarito “was 17 pounds heavier and a big guy. And this big guy out pressure on him all night long. It was Manny’s hardest fight physically. He came out with his hands hurting a little bit because he landed so many shots and his side is a little sore. But he fought a big, strong guy.”

Following a recent conference in Manila on “Boxing and the Brain” in which several specialists and well known ring doctors from the US and Britain discussed sports-related head injuries, Arum admitted that brain injuries are “a very big concern but that’s why at the start of every year he (Pacquiao” must take the finest possible MRI brain tests to make sure that there is no abnormality and that nothing bad has happened.”

Arum stressed that this is a “different issue and that issue is certainly always going to be there and always before he starts fighting for the New Year and before he gets into the ring in May, Manny will have a full test in the US.”

The astute Top Rank promoter who arrived in Manila early Tuesday morning to discuss Pacquiao’s next fight and his future in boxing as well as to attend Pacquiao’s 32nd birthday bash admitted that Pacquiao “is going to take poundings now in all of his fights because he is fighting naturally bigger guys. He fights as a welterweight but he is much smaller than the normal welterweight.”

Bob Arum Discusses Floyd Mayweather's Legal Troubles

By Michael Marley

If you think Topr Rank's CEO Bob Arum, who once promoted Floyd Mayweather Jr., has any real animus towards the troubled but undefeated boxer - you could not be more wrong.

Arum has some fond memories of the mercurial Mayweather if not of their business "divorce" which included a lawsuit against Top Rank filed by "Money May."

Arum, 79, puts his personal feelings aside when it comes to the bottom line.

The one-time Robert F. Kennedy Justice Department attorney and tax revenue bloodhound could be the most pragmatic politician since Lyndon Baines Johnson was in power at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington.

As Arum and wife, Lovee, prepared to board their Manila to Las Vegas homeward flight Sunday, the veteran promoter was trying to make sense of Floyd's latest stint in the Clark County Jail.

I questioned on Friday why Mayweather pays a salary to bodyguards when they don't protect the superstar boxer from getting in childish beefs like his "Poker Face" jabbing contenst with housing development security guard Shayne Smith on Nov. 15. Smith's allegations led to Mayweather's second stint in the Vegas facility this year.

I wondered about that and so does Uncle Bob.

"I never thought Floyd was any kind of bad guy, any kind of criminal type," Arum said after he and his wife returned to Manila after the lavish 32nd birthday bash for Manny Pacquiao in General Santos City.

"I still don't think that Floyd is a bad guy and I'd like to think he's a sensible guy. But this arrest...him going to jail again...this is the same old, same old for Floyd. The guy I'd like to think of as a sensible guy, well...he's looking like a guy with a hair-trigger temper."

Arum then put Mayweather's so-called security goons on blast.

"What does he pay them for? What do they do for Floyd? You've got people who do that work, then they go out into the parking lot and deal with parking tickets. That's why they call them bodyguards, right? They're supposed to protect the star. Floyd's not supposed to be even going into the parking lot and getting involved in something like this.

"It looks to me like Mayweather has nobody that he really listens to, respects enough to listen to," Arum said.

Arum said that he believes Mayweather's mounting criminal issues, including the assault allegations from the mother of his children, and allegations that he was involved in last year's car shooting at a roller skating rink - have made Mayweather the enemy of prosecutors in Vegas.

"The prosecutors must think he is a bad guy the way it's one incident after another," Arum said. "You can understand what their attitude about him must be at this point. To them, he looks like a guy who is really out of control

Marquez Rips Mosley: Tells Pacquiao To Face Berto

By Mark Vester

WBA/WBO lightweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez took a few shots at his former Golden Boy Promotions stablemate "Sugar" Shane Mosley, who recently left the Los Angeles-based promotional company to pursue a fight with Manny Pacquiao on May 7 in Las Vegas. Mosley, Marquez, along with unbeaten WBC welterweight champion Andre Berto - are the three names under consideration to face Pacquiao on the May date.

Marquez is doing everything possible to get a third bout with Pacquiao. Mosley is the frontrunner to land the opportunity. If Marquez can't secure the third fight, he doesn't feel Msoley is a deserving party. He says Berto deserves the shot more.

"I think the best option would be for him to face Berto. Mosley is on the decline, he has not looked good in his last two fights," Marquez was quoted by scribe Ricardo Lois. The boxer made the comments during his weekly appearance on ESPN Deportes' Golpe a Golpe program.

But, that doesn't mean Marquez thinks Berto will do any better.

"Berto's style of boxing is a bit mechanical, slow, and orthodox. Berto would have a difficult time with Pacquiao's speed," Marquez said.

Erik Morales: "I'm Ready For Juan Manuel Marquez!"

By Jhonny Gonzalez

At the Caliente Racetrack in Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico, Erik “Terrible” Morales (51-6, 35 KOs) retained his WBC silver junior welterweight title with a twelve round unanimous decision over Francisco Lorenzo (35-9, 16KOs). The fight was better than many had expected. Lorenzo suffered a flash knockdown in the fifth, but he was never afraid to stand and trade with the bigger Morales. There were a few close rounds where both fighters went to war. The scores were 116-111, 114-113 and 115-112.

"It was a tough fight, which I expected. I'm ready for the fight against Juan Manuel Marquez. I'm ready to go for a world title next year," Morales said.

A fight between Morales and Marquez could happen at the end of March or on April 16 in either Las Vegas or Mexico.

Golden Boy Promotions head matchmaker Eric Gomez says Marquez-Morales is possible. If they can't get Marquez a trilogy with Mayweather, then Morales will become the next suitable option.

"Golden Boy is doing its best for Juan Manuel Marquez to get him a fight with Pacquiao," Gomez said. "But the plan is, that if we can't get [the Pacquiao] fight done, then everything directs to Marquez and Morales possibly facing each other in March or April. We believe it would be a great pay-per-view and it would sell even more of what Marquez did with Marco Antonio Barrera."

Lucian Bute: I'm Ready For The Best Super Middleweights

By Chris Labate

IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute was interviewed at the Pepsi Coliseum in Quebec, and said that "he's ready to fight the best at super middleweight." According to sources in the arena, InterBox is holding a press conference on Monday to announce his next fight on March 19. The probable opponent is Irish boxer Brian MaGee. The terms were reached for the fight.

The March date will be the first bout in Bute's exclusive contract with Showtime. The network is going to build him into fights with the best boxers at 168-pounds. Bute said there are no plans to move up in weight for a mega-bout with light heavyweight Jean Pascal. He wants to face some of the top names who are currently involved in Showtime's Super Six tournament, which the network expects to finish by the fall. After taking a few big fights at 168, Bute said he will consider a move to 175 in 2012

Shaw: Dawson Has To Knock Pascal Out To Win in Canada!

By Lem Satterfield

Promoter Gary Shaw expects Chad Dawson's rematch with WBC/IBO light heavyweight king Jean Pascal of Canada to take place in "in March or April" of next year. In the first meeting, Pascal won an eleven-round technical unanimous decision over Dawson at the Bell Centre in Montreal in August. Last Saturday' main event at the Pepsi Coliseum in Quebec City, between Pascal and 45-year-old Bernard Hopkins, ended in a controversial, majority draw.

Shaw is not surprised at the controversial outcome of Pascal-Hopkins. Shaw has been complaining about the officials in Canada since his lightweight, Ali Funeka, was hit with a controversial majority draw against Joan Guzman in November, 2009 in Quebec.

"I've said all along that Canada is as bad as Germany. You need to knock the fighter out twice to win. I've gotten a raw decision with Ali Funeka, and they stopped the fight in the 11th round with Jean Pascal to save Pascal," Shaw said. "I mean, there was no need to stop that fight between Jean Pascal and Chad Dawson. And now, Bernard Hopkins and Golden Boy's Richard Schaefer have gotten a taste of what I've been talking about."

"So, Canada's got a bad reputation. Now, when Chad Dawson goes up to fight Jean Pascal, he's going to know that we need know that we've got to knock Jean Pascal out to win the fight. You can't win a decision in Canada, and you can't win a decision in Germany."

The original fight contract calls for the winner, who was Pascal, to decide the location of the rematch. Shaw expects Pascal's side to pick a location in Canada for the rematch with Dawson.

"You see, the problem is that in the United States, we try to treat everybody fairly. So if you're a Canadian fighter, or a Russian fighter, a German, or an Englishman, you're going to get a chance in the United States because the United States' judges aren't all from one country, usually, in their respective nationalities," Shaw said.

"You can't say the same for Canada. Canada, you know, it's just a tough place to win. I've said this publicly after the Funeka fight, I said it publicly after the Dawson fight, and I said it to the Canadian Commission. But, I have a great fighter in Chad Dawson, and we're going to go there and try to knock Jean Pascal out, because we know now that that's what we have to do to win."

Pascal's Promoter: WBC Will Allow Dawson Rematch First

By Lem Satterfield

According to Yvon Michel, promoter for WBC/IBO light heavyweight champion Jean Pascal, the WBC's President Jose Sulaiman will not stand in the way of Pascal's contractual obligation to rematch Chad Dawson, before taking a rematch with Bernard Hopkins. Michel wanted to clear up the situation after Hopkins' promoter, Golden Boy Promotions' CEO Richard Schaefer, said Sulaiman would order an immediate rematch.

Pascal and Hopkins fought to a controversial twelve round majority draw on Saturday night at the Pepsi Colesium in Quebec City, Canada. American judge Steve Morrow had it for Hopkins, 114-112, but Canadian official Jean Claude Paquette and Belgian official Daniel Van de Wiele scored it even, respectively, at 113-113, and, 114-114.

"Look, we are definitely going to give a rematch to Bernard Hopkins. It would be our choice that it would be the first choice to fight Hopkins. But if we have to fight Dawson, then, it's Hopkins right after," Michel said.

"I would say that the Dawson fight would definitely be in Canada because Chad Dawson has no drawing power in the United States. For the other fight, with Hopkins, Jean said that he is willing to go anywhere to fight him. It's not a problem as long as the the revenue is close to or superior to what we can have here."

Khan-Peterson: Amir's Return Possible For April 9 or 16

By Nick Parkinson, courtesy of The Daily Star

AMIR KHAN is being lined up to face top American Lamont Peterson in England next April.

The Bolton boxer wants to follow up his thrilling points win over Marcos Maidana in Las Vegas last weekend with his first fight in Britain in more than a year.

Khan, 24, floored Maidana in the first round with a wicked body shot but then endured shaky moments himself in one of the fights of the year.

The WBA light-welterweight king was battered about the ring by the teak-tough Argie in the tenth round, when he proved he can take a big punch and come back firing with fast *combinations.

Now Khan wants to put on a show back in the UK and his No. 1 choice would be Peterson, 26, at Manchester’s MEN Arena or the O2 Arena in London on April 9 or 16.

Former world champion Zab Judah and *rising star Victor Ortiz – both Yanks – are also on the shortlist of possible *future opponents but one-time world title challenger Peterson is first in the queue.

Khan said: “We are looking at Lamont Peterson very closely. There is also Zab Judah and *Victor Ortiz.

“I saw Judah in Vegas and shook his hand but didn’t realise it was him at the time *because he has put on a bit of weight.

“But we haven’t decided yet and I want to speak with my trainer Freddie Roach before we pick an opponent for sure. But in two weeks we should know. Peterson would be good. He is sharp, stylish and not a bad fighter.

“They all excite me because I am in a very good division but Peterson is a good fight for me. I think I have the style to knock him out.

“I want to fight in April because that gives me time for a good break and enough time to have an eight-week *training camp.

“My last two fights have been in *America and I think it’s time now to get a big fight over here. I know every fighter likes to go to Vegas, the Mandalay Bays, the Madison Square *Gardens, but you cannot forget your home fans. I want to fight here next.”

Despite his stunning performance, Khan said: “I really think I over-trained for *Maidana. I didn’t have any snap and wasn’t as *explosive as normal and the reason was a long training camp.

“A 12-week training camp is a long time *especially when I only had 10lb to lose.”

Mosley’s adviser meeting with Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum today to finalise a deal

By Jim Dower: Shane Mosley’s adviser James Prince is set to meet with Manny Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum today on Tuesday to finalise a deal for a bout on May 7th at the MGM Grand, in Las Vegas, Nevada. The Los Angeles Times are porting that the meeting will be occuring today for what will likely be another huge pay-per-view bout. Mosley is one of three opponents that Arum had been choosing from to face Pacquiao. The other two are Juan Manuel Marquez and Andre Berto.

Mosley has been in the lead position from day one due to his better name recognition value. It hasn’t a popular choice with many boxing fans, who see Mosley as being a shot fighter who doesn’t have the skills anymore to beat the very best fighters in the sport. Mosley fought to a draw with former World Boxing Council (WBC) junior middleweight champion Sergio Mora in September. Before that, Mosley lost a one-sided 12 round decision to Floyd Mayweather Jr.

It wasn’t so much that Mosley lost to Mayweather that was the problem. It was the way that Mosley lost. He just looked tired and old. And in his recent fight against Mora, Mosley didn’t look any better. This leads people to believe that he’s shot given his advanced age of 39, and it doesn’t make some boxing fans happy that Pacquiao would agree to face someone who appears to be on his last legs in the sport.

However, this is a sport about making money, and Mosley is clearly more popular than Berto and Marquez in the U.S. Because of that, Arum and Pacquiao will make more money in a fight against Mosley, even if it’s not a fight that will be thrilling to watch due to the one-sided nature of the bout. Mosley and Pacquiao appear to be going in different directions. Mosley seems to be going down hill, while Pacquiao is still fighting on the same high level he always had.

Vitali says Wladimir is prepared to face David Haye

By Sean McDaniel WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko is saying that his younger brother IBF/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko is ready to go after World Boxing Association heavyweight champion David Haye next, according to both Sportinglife.co.uk, and Golzka paper. It’s nice to know that Wladimir is interested in facing Haye, but it doesn’t really have much meaning because the hold up for a fight has been Haye in the past year.

Wladimir has always been ready and willing to fight Haye, but he hasn’t been able to get the British fighter into the ring for some reason. The two Klitschkos have gone back and forth in deciding who should face Haye first. At one time it was Wladimir, then Vitali and now it’s Wladimir. It doesn’t much which Klitschko is interested in facing Haye if he’s not willing to fight either of them.

Supposedly, Haye is ready to fight the klitschko – or at least one of them – because his back is against the wall now that he plans on retiring in October next year when Haye turns 31. However, some people think Haye isn’t serious about retiring and is just talking about retirement to get interest up for him.

However, it would be great if Haye finally did decide to fight one of them, because this is really the only fight in the heavyweight division worth watching right now. There’s a little bit of interest in seeing one of the Klitschkos face top heavyweight contender Tomasz Adamek, but not nearly as much as for the Haye-Klitschko fight. Haye has gotten a lot of attention facing older heavyweights that he’s been able to blast out without any problems.

Khan says he would knock Prescott out in three rounds

By William Mackay: Amir Khan (24-1, 17 KO’s) looked anything like a fighter that belongs with a major title belt around his waist when he was reduced to a pile of spaghetti on the canvas against Breidis Prescott in a 1st round knockout loss two years ago. Khan came out fast, got staggered with a jab and dropped by a hook. Khan got to his feet, staggering badly and was finished off by Prescott in one of the quickest knockouts of the year. Khan for whatever reason never attempted to avenge that loss.

Now, oddly enough, Khan is bragging that he could easily beat Prescott, yet he still won’t fight him to prove his theory. It’s kind of funny. He thinks he can beat someone that trounced him but won’t try and actually do it. Excuse me if I’m skeptical.

In an article at theboltonnews.co.uk, Khan said “I think it would be an easy fight against Prescott now. I would knock him out in three rounds.”

It’s so sad how deluded Khan sounds. It’s as if his feet aren’t touching the ground and he’s walking on air or better yet, walking on water. I don’t see Khan beating Prescott, and I don’t see him stopping him. It’s sad to see Khan bragging about a fighter he won’t face. Instead, he let the smaller Kevin Mitchell face Prescott and do what he apparently reluctant to do. I would believe in what Khan says if he would actually go out and prove that he can beat Prescott, but since he’s not doing it, all I can think is that he doubts himself and figures that if he talks about it enough, people won’t question him anymore about the loss. Unfortunately, that’s not how you convince people. You have to do it in the ring, not with words.

Khan recently defeated Marcos Maidana by a 12 round decision that was very close. Khan ended up getting beaten up around the face, whereas Maidana came out of the fight without hardly a scratch. Khan was badly hurt in the 10th, and continued to get hammered in the last three rounds of the fight while holding onto one of Maidana’s arms from time to time without being penalized for it. Oddly enough, the one that got penalized in the fight was Maidana himself for accidentally elbowing the referee.

Khan says “Prescott does not hit as hard as Maidana. He [Maidana] is as big a puncher in boxing has had for a long time. His record says it all.”

It looks like Khan is trying to build Maidana up because he was hurt by him. I don’t know that Maidana is a bigger puncher than Prescott. I think Prescott hits very hard with both hands. He may not be able to throw with the same kind of power in close like Maidana, but on the outside, Prescott is lethal if he lands one of his hooks from the proper distance. I’d like to see Khan prove that he can knock Prescott out in the 3rd round like he says he could. I don’t believe it.

Cloud vs. Hopkins, Pascal vs. Dawson doubleheader?

By Dan Ambrose: Bernard Hopkins (51-5-2, 32 KO’s) failed at beating WBC light heavyweight champion Jean Pascal (26-1-1, 16 KO’s) last Saturday night in a fight that Hopkins was knocked down twice in and had to rally just to turn it into a majority draw. Since the World Boxing Council president Jose Sulaiman has decided not to force Pascal to give Hopkins an immediate rematch, Hopkins now is going to have to cool his heels and just wait his turn and hope he can do better next time against Pascal.

However, fightnews.com is reporting that IBF light heavyweight champion Tavoris Cloud is willing to fight Hopkins on the undercard of Pascal’s next fight against two-time light heavyweight champion Chad Dawson. The winner of those two fights would then face each other for what would be a lot more interesting fight than if Hopkins were to immediately fight Pascal in a rematch.

The winner of all of those fights would then take on the winner of the light heavyweight unification bout between WBA champion Beibut Shumenov and WBO title holder Jurgen Braehmer, which takes place next month on January 8th in Kazakhstan. What we would have here is a mini light heavyweight tournament with all the light heavyweights facing off and the winner of the fights being pretty much crowned as the best fighter in the division. I see this as a win-win situation for Hopkins and all the fighters involved.

Cloud (22-0, 18 KO’s) would be a huge test for Hopkins, because unlike Pascal, Cloud would be standing in front of Hopkins forcing him to fight hard for 12 rounds. He wouldn’t hit and run the way that Pascal was doing in the fight. Cloud throws a lot of punches and is an excellent inside fighter with good power. I can see Cloud giving Hopkins a tremendous amount of problems because Cloud appears to be a better inside fighter than Hopkins, throws with more, has better stamina and is capable of fighting hard for three minutes of every round without needing rest breaks the way that Hopkins often does.

For Hopkins, it would be a great fight for him to sell his rematch with Pascal, because if he can decisively beat Cloud, it would make his fight with Pascal much more meaningful. Plus, Cloud is an exciting fighter who throws a lot of punches. If Hopkins-Cloud fight would have to be an exciting fight, because if Hopkins tried to punch and clinch his way to victory, he’d get beaten up and out-worked.

My guess is Hopkins won’t want anything to do with Cloud because of how hard he would have to work to beat this guy. I guess I wouldn’t blame him but it would be a smart move for him to man up and take this fight if he wants to build up his rematch with Pascal.

Prescott made his fame off of Khan. He has looked like complete shit ever since. It was the one punch that made his career. That writer is delirious if he really believes Khan wouldn't murder Prescott if there was a rematch.

Manny vs Shane?
Why even bother...
I'm siding with Tony and Bigface (even though they are probably the same person, ha) on this one.

Either Klitschko will KO Haye

Even though the weight and height will be a huge difference, we finally do have a HW fight to actually look forward to.

Manny isn't on Mayweather's priority list right now.
He has more important things to do like make youtube videos from his kitchen.
