Did Toney make suckers out of fans who paid to watch his fight against Couture?

By Francisco Hernandez: August 29, 2010: James Toney’s nom de guerre “Lights Out” has now changed to “Con-Man” Toney. This is because last night Toney pulled one of the biggest con jobs of the decade in taking on and losing to one of MMA’s biggest stars in Randy Couture in UFC 118. No one in his right mind would pay a cent to watch Toney, not even if he was pitted against an alligator. Yet Toney has managed to con close to a million dollars from MMA fans. The irony of this great con is that such a huge purse is beyond most renowned MMA fighter’s earnings. It is incredible that an old, overweight, has been boxer, shadow of a fighter, can earn so much money in MMA, more money than most MMA stars can ever hope to make. James Toney is laughing all the way to the bank.

P.T. Barnum is supposed to of said that “There’s a sucker born every minute.” James “Con Man” Toney must have been a dedicated student of Barnum, because he made a sucker out of MMA fans yesterday; stealing a purse that most MMA stars consider a wild dream. I can imagine Toney right now rolling on the floor laughing his ass off: “There’s a sucker born every minute.”

What would make MMA fans pay such a huge purse to watch a man who no one in the Boxing World would pay a gringo penny for? The only explanation one can fathom is that MMA fans are the same group of people who believe professional Wrestling is real. MMA fans and Wrestling fans are probably the same group. They are the same people that Barnum referred to. This is not to say that boxing fans cannot be suckered also, but it’s more difficult to do so. Most experienced boxing fans understand when they are up against a con job; it takes more effort to pull a con on them. This is probably because boxing has been around for long time; it’s known all the cons that can be pulled, from the mob fixing fights, to shady boxing organizations and promoters, to fighters using plaster on their fists. So yes boxing fans can be conned, especially the green ones, but neither as bad nor as easily like the poor suckers in MMA.

What will be the next circus event at MMA? Will they convince Muhammad Ali “Cassius Clay” to take on the current MMA champion? How many suckers would watch that? Surprise me. James “Con Man” Toney, old, ex-steroid user, overweight, out of shape, with only a fast and loose tongue left, was able to con MMA fans for close to a million. That’s incredible. If I didn’t feel so sad for the MMA fans that are being suckered dry, I would laugh at the strangeness of it all. Will this be a trend for all old faded boxers, to make a killing at MMA? Money for nothing? Floyd Mayweather claims to have made 20 million from World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE); they don’t call him “Money” for nothing.

One cannot help feeling sorry for the poor MMA lads who kill themselves training hard for their matches only to get paid in peanuts, then an old, overweight-out of shape, trash talking, shade of a fighter, comes and makes a killing!

James Toney's Final Mission: Rid Boxing of Kimbo Slice

By Michael Marley

James “Lights Out” Toney has a course of action left to accomplish.

He participated in a charade, a total mismatch Saturday night in Boston when Randy “The Natural” Couture dropped him like a sack of potatoes for a first round knockout under MMA rules and regulations.

Now I've got the bright (?) idea for another laugher of a fight except that this time it will be five weight division world champion Toney doing the laughing and not being laughed at.

At the same time, Toney could do boxing a favor and rid us of the ridiculous pretension of street brawler Kimbo Slice.

We can label it "Bully Beatdown" like that TV program where would be toughs get their ashes hauled by real MMA athletes.

Slice and handler Big Gary Shaw would have us believe that, having been an MMA flop, now the nearly age 40 Miami destroyer of winos and crackheads, is going to become a legitimate heavyweight contender in boxing.

I mean, come on Big Gar, don't we have enough garbage to deal with already? How many sports is Slice going to be detected as a fraud in anyway?

I wouldn't pay to watch it but it would be great to see a real fighter like Toney mop the floor with this complete phony, Slice.

In an alleyway, Slice might clean Toney's clock, I don't know.

But, inside the boxing ring, Slice would think he forgot to pay his power bill because I've no doubt how quickly and completely Toney would live up to his nickname and slightly rehabilitate himself.

“Lights Out” would dim all the lamps for Kimbo, for sure.

For boxing, it would be a simple case of addition by subtraction

Should Calderon fight a rematch with Segura?

By Eric Thomas: WBO light flyweight champion Ivan Calderon (34-1-1, 6 KO’s) suffered his first defeat of his nine-year pro career to the younger and taller Giovanni Segura (25-1-1, 21 KO’s) last Saturday night in an 8th round TKO loss at the Coliseo Mario ‘Quijote’ Morales, Guaynabo, Puerto Rico. Calderon was stopped with a series of hard body shots in the 8th round. Calderon fought bravely for six rounds, but didn’t have the offensive firepower to match the power and the relentless pace that Segura set out in this fight.

Segura had figured out a way to beat Calderon’s excellent defensive ability by overloading him with constant pressure and nonstop punching. In a way, it was like watching a smaller version of Antonio Margarito with Segura’s relentless attack. The reason why Segura fights so much like Margarito is because they share a common trainer Javier Capetillo, who is the brainchild of the all out offensive style of Margarito and Segura. Capetillo no longer trains Margarito after Margarito was found to have a plaster like material on his hand wraps a year ago before his fight with Shane Mosley. However, Capetillo is still able to train fighters outside of the United States and Segura is one of his best pupils.

Calderon took a lot of punishment in the Segura fight, and although he might want to try and avenge his defeat and take on Segura in a rematch, he should think twice before doing so. I don’t think Calderon can beat a fighter like Segura. Calderon doesn’t have the size, the offensive talent, the work rate or the youth to beat a guy like him. I’m pretty sure they’re going to waive a lot of money under Calderon’s nose to try and get him to fight Segura again, because they’re already talking about the Calderon-Segura bout being a fight of the year candidate.

If Calderon needs the money badly, then he should go ahead and take the fight. But if he really thinks he has a chance of beating Segura in a rematch, then he needs to think again. Calderon doesn’t stand a chance against Segura. The guy is too good offensively, and his size and youth makes him too good for Calderon. What Calderon needs to do is move down in weight to the minimumweight division where Calderon held the WBO title from 2003 to 2007. Calderon would do well at that weight, because he wouldn’t be at a huge disadvantage in size like he was against the much bigger Segura last Saturday night.

Bradley-Alexander Update: $1.1 Million May Not Be Enough

By Rick Reeno

BoxingScene.com was advised by a reliable source that promoter Gary Shaw made an offer of $1.1 million to WBO junior welterweight champion Timothy Bradley for a unification showdown with WBC/IBF champion Devon Alexander. HBO has reserved the date of January 29 for the possible fight. To date, Shaw has not received a response to that offer from the Bradley camp.

I've heard Alexander has yet to receive any offer from his promoter, Don King. The offer from King could be higher, or lower, than the offer presented to Bradley. It really depends on the amount King plans to keep for himself. While some of it is speculation, it's safe to assume that $1.1 million may not be enough to get the fight done for either side.

Last week, Alexander's manager/trainer Kevin Cunningham made it clear to BoxingScene.com that both fighters deserved to get a bigger number than what Amir Khan was able to earn for his May fight with Paulie Malignaggi. Khan reportedly cleared at least $1.1 million or more.

"Devon and Tim both deserve more than what Khan received for the Malignaggi fight. This is the most highly anticipated fight besides Mayweather-Pacquiao. I think they know they need to come correct with their offer," Cunningham said.

This looks good and I've been waiting for this. Ouma's story is pretty crazy, forcing to murder people at such a young age, etc. It's on tonight on Sundance

Born in Uganda in 1978, Kassim Ouma was abducted by rebels when he was 6 and trained to kill and torture. His journey from child soldier to boxing champion is the basis for "Kassim the Dream," a moving and at times chilling documentary.

"Kassim The Dream" Documentary Premieres on Sundance

Many boxing fans have heard the harrowing tale of Kassim Ouma’s troubled history as a former child-soldier and can now view the film that chronicles his story.

The award-winning documentary feature “Kassim the Dream” makes its’ broadcast premiere on Monday night at 8 PM on the Sundance Channel.

A former world junior-middleweight boxing champion, 31-year-old Kassim "The Dream" Ouma outwardly exudes good cheer and charm in filmmaker Kief Davidson's documentary profile.

However, Kassim's dark past is unlike that of any other boxing star.

At age six, Ouma was kidnapped by Ugandan rebel soldiers and forced into duty as a child soldier during a bloody civil war.

Now, after a decade in exile in America, Kassim undertakes a painful six-day journey home to Uganda, where he admits that as a child he committed both torture and murder.

Academy Award winning actor Forest Whitaker was the Executive Producer for the Ouma film, which picked up a number of major international awards.

It was one of five nominations for the Best Documentary Feature Award by the International Documentary Association in 2008. It won the AFI Fest Audience and Best Documentary awards, the Silverdocs American Film Market Award, received the Doc U Award at the world’s leading documentary festival in Amsterdam, amongst other honors.

The film has been shown in theaters around the world and on Sundance Selects series on pay-per-view last winter.

Additional information and a film trailer are available at the KassimTheDream.com website.

Catching up.

I need to watch that doc.

Pascal is too fast for Hopkins. A fight with Bute is much more intriguing.

It's safe to say if the fight between Manny and Floyd still doesnt materialize even after they both fight their next opponents, it's pretty much not happening. I can't believe people are still talking about it though. Even when Manny fought Clottey the talks were Floyd. Now he is fighting Margarito and people are still talking about Floyd.

September is going to be a pretty slow month.

Klitschko vs. Peter to be shown on ESPN on September 11th

By Jim Dower: U.S. boxing fans will still get a chance to see the September 11th title fight between IBF/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko (54-3, 48 KO’s) and former WBC heavyweight champion Samuel Peter (34-3, 27 KO’s). ESPN will be showing the fight to U.S. audiences. HBO opted not to air this fight for some reason. It’s unfortunate but thankfully, ESPN has decided to come in and take up the slack and show the fight to Americans. It might not reach quite as many people as it would have if it had been shown by HBO, because ESPN likely won’t be advertising it as much as HBO would have done under the similar circumstances.

The fight will be taking place in Germany at the Commerzbank-Arena, Frankfurt, Hessen. Klitschko, 34, fought Peter in the past five years ago and beat him by a 12 round unanimous decision in one of the most exciting fights of 2005. Klitschko believes that their rematch could end up equally as exciting, although he intends on trying to win the fight as fast as possible this time. It’s likely that Klitschko’s trainer, Emanuel Steward, has stressed to him how important it is to try and get the hard hitting Peter out of there as fast as possible to make sure that he’s not still around late in the fight trying to knock Wladimir’s head off.

Peter, 29, was still very dangerous late in their previous fight and was able to knock Wladimir down in the 10th and it looked like Wladimir was fortunate to survive that knockdown because it came at the very end of the round and he was hurt. When Peter was attacking hard, Wladimir looked in danger at all times. Many boxing fans believe that Wladimir has improved greatly since the first fight with Peter and think this will help him win this fight easily.

But Wladimir really hasn’t faced any real punchers in the past five years like Peter, so you can’t be sure what will happen in a rematch between Klitschko and Peter. Samuel has improved as well in the past year, and has won four consecutive fights since losing to Vitali Klitschko and Eddie Chambers. The biggest improvement in Peter’s game is his conditioning. He’s never been in this kind of shape before in his career, even at the very start of his career. He’s a lot leaner and moves much better than he did before. His maneuverability could be big problems for Wladimir if Peter is able to cut off the ring on him and land his big shots.

Share and Enjoy:

Amir Khan not interested in HBO super six style tournament

By Kieran Gallagher: Amir Khan (23-1-0) has scuppered a HBO plan to create a ‘Super Six’ style tournament at junior welterweight according to promoter Gary Shaw.

Shaw, who represents Timothy Bradley (26-0-0), revealed his man wanted to participate as did Don King’s fighter Devon Alexander (21-0-0).

Despite the large sums of money on offer, Khan was reportedly not interested. Nor were other HBO targets Victor Ortiz (27-2-1), Marcos Maidana (29-1-0) and Juan Manuel Marquez (51-5-1).

Shaw believes they should have gone ahead with the tournament without them.

With such marquee names in the frame, boxing fans will be sorely disappointed that HBO were unable to make the tournament a reality.

World Boxing Council sanctions Pacquiao-Margarito bout: WBC 154 title will be up for

By Chris Williams: To no great surprise, the WBC has sanctioned the November 13th bout between Manny Pacquiao and Antonio Margarito for the vacant World Boxing Council junior middleweight title according to the latest boxing news. This means that the winner of this fight will now be the new WBC junior middleweight champion, despite Pacquiao having never fought at this weight and Margarito having fought only once in the past six years. Instead of the fight taking place at the normal 154 pound limit, there will be a 151 pound catch weight for the fight. How in the heck is this fight being sanctioned by the WBC if it’s not going to be at the full weight? They need to put some kind of asterisk next to the title to show that it wasn’t at the full weight.

This is crazy. Pacquiao is going to fight for the 154 pound title but will get a handicap of 151 pounds. That handicap certainly won’t help Margarito and that’s why I don’t see how it’s allowed for a title fight.

I have no idea why Margarito was pushed to the number #1 ranking in the division with only one fight at that weight and I also can’t understand how Pacquiao can be allowed to fight for the title with zero fights at that weight. What about the top contenders that are being skipped over like Alfredo Angulo, Shane Mosley and Kermit Cintron. You would think that at least one, if not all, rate higher for this fight that Pacquiao and Margarito. At least they’ve fought at this weight in the past. It just makes me not respect the rankings when I see fighters getting shots for belts that they have no previous experience in that weight class.

God, I wish Sergio Martinez hadn’t vacated the WBC title, but then again if he hadn’t, there wouldn’t likely be any interest by Margarito and Pacquiao in fighting him. Martinez is the real deal at 154 and no joke. I can’t see either Margarito or Pacquiao beating a guy like that. Margarito may have beaten a very young Martinez at the very start of his career a decade ago but I see Martinez as worlds better than Margarito right now. Maybe the winner of the Pacquiao-Margarito fight will take on Martinez? I’m not holding my breath on that one happening.

It doesn’t matter if Martinez comes down to the 154 pound weight; I still don’t see that happening. Martinez has a way of making fighters look bad and dominating them and I can’t see a little 5’6” Pacquiao being able to win any rounds against Martinez. If Pacquiao went life and death against Juan Manuel Marquez twice, with a lot of people thinking Marquez should have won both fights, then a fighter like Martinez would probably do a number on Pacquiao. I don’t even consider Margarito as being competition for Martinez at this point.

At any rate, Pacquiao and Margarito will now be fighting for the vacant WBC 154 pound title on November 13th at the Cowboy Stadium, in Arlington, Texas.

Margarito calls De La Hoya a “Sissy” and challenges him to a fight

By Eric Thomas: Antonio Margarito (38-6, 27 KO’s) isn’t happy with some of the things Oscar De La Hoya said in the media about Margarito and his hand wrap issue. Margarito had this to say in response to De La Hoya in an article at Philboxing.com:: “I don’t know what he has against me, I really don’t understand, what I do know is that he had a big influence in the California State Athletic Commission with everything he said against me, I am upset because he talked too much and said some nasty things and he has a shady past himself that most of us know about. I hope he takes off the fishnet, stop acting like a sissy and fight me, if you have something against me then get in the ring and fight.”

It’s not likely that De La Hoya will get anywhere near the ring to fight Margarito, because he had a chance to fight him in the past and opted to take a pass on that fight. Instead, De La Hoya chose to fight Manny Pacquiao and ended up taking a beating in that fight and wound up getting stopped in the 8th round of a one-sided fight.

In hindsight, De La Hoya may have been better off fighting Margarito because at least he wouldn’t have had to strip down weight in order to make the 147 pound limit to fight Pacquiao. Taking off weight to get down to 147 left De La Hoya badly weight drained and he had nothing left by the time that he got in the ring with Pacquiao.

Margarito has a fight lined up with Pacquiao on November 13th at the Cowboy Stadium, in Arlington, Texas. This will be the biggest fight of Margarito’s career and the biggest payday by far that he’s earned in boxing. Margarito has a lot of work cut out for him in getting ready for this fight because Pacquiao has been dominating his opponents for the past two years and knocking almost everyone out.

Toney hurt the sport of boxing with his fight agaisnt grappler Couture?

By Matt Stein: James Toney did not give a good account of himself in his foray into the MMA world with his 1st round tap out loss to 47-year-old Randy Couture last Saturday night in UFC 118. I don’t know if the 42-year-old Toney is aware of this or even cares, but he may have actually helped the MMA to attract more boxing fans to their sport with this fight rather than the other way around. This fight was hugely successful in terms of pay per view sales compared to past UFC events and you have to figure that the reason for this was because of boxing fans purchasing it to see a match-up between a boxer and a MMA star.

Toney did not give a good account of himself in the fight, however. He came into the fight weighing a fat 237, which for his short 5’9″ frame, was about 60+ pounds too much for him to carry. Couture, no longer considered the best in his weight class in the MMA, was still far too good for Toney. Immediately, Couture took Toney to the canvas with a single leg take down. That’s a move that’s not used very much in the UFC because it’s so easy to defend against. However, Toney had no idea what to do when Couture dove at his right leg and took him down to the mat. Once Toney was on his back, his large belly kept him there and made it hard for him to turn on his side or stomach.

Couture just sat on top of Toney and rained shots down on his head. Eventually the action got near the fence, and Couture began to try and mix in chokes with his punches. Finally, it looked like Couture was showing mercy on Toney by grabbing him in a choke and causing Toney to tap out. Couture very easily could have let it go on longer and landed more head shots, but it looked like he didn’t want to really hurt Toney.

Toney reportedly made $700,000 for this fight. It’s unclear if he intends on continuing to fight in the MMA or if this was a one shot thing. Hopefully, Toney will forget about the MMA and either go back to boxing or retire. He’s not cut out for MMA at this stage in life and I can’t see him learning enough to win any fights against quality MMA fighters. He’s too old and all that weight that he’s carrying around on his small frame will continue to be a big problem for him in the future should he want to stay in the MMA spor

Manny Pacquiao: 'Margarito Knew What Was in The Wraps'

By Ronnie Nathanielsz

MANILA, Philippines—Pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao believes Antonio Margarito is better than Joshua Clottey and sees an action-packed bout when they tangle for the World Boxing Council super welterweight crown on Nov. 13 at the Dallas Cowboys Stadium in Texas.

In an interview with BoxingScene.com and the Inquirer prior to his departure for Los Angeles Monday night, Pacquiao noted that Margarito “is a very aggressive fighter” and the Mexican’s height and reach advantage will make it “difficult for me.”

Pacquiao predicted “it’s going to be a good fight because Margarito likes to come forward all the time and throw punches and that’s what we like—plenty of action. For sure there’s going to be a lot of action in the ring and it won’t be like the Joshua Clottey fight.”

In their 147-pound showdown at the same venue last March 13, Clottey merely took the punches thrown by Pacquiao and hardly fought back.

Pacquiao compared the upcoming clash with the 5-foot-11 Margarito to his fight with the 5-10 Oscar De La Hoya, who quit at the end of the eighth round after taking a beating.

Pacquiao also said he doesn’t believe Margarito’s claim that he didn’t know about the illegal hand-wraps that were discovered prior to his fight against Shane Mosley, when Margarito suffered a ninth-round TKO and lost his WBA super world welterweight title on Jan. 24, 2009.

“I don’t believe him (Margarito),” Pacquiao said. “Of course he knows about that (illegal hand-wraps). Its his hands and he watches the taping.”

Pacquiao believes Margarito denied he knew about the hand-wraps because he was “looking for a way out so his reputation won’t be damaged among his fans.”

However, Pacquiao noted that Margarito had “paid his dues by sacrificing and not fighting for one year.

“I hope he learned his lesson and will not repeat the same mistake.”

At the same time, Pacquiao said he is not taking any chances, pointing out that “we can watch his hands being wrapped because our agreement is we will have two representatives led by my coach (Freddie Roach) to watch the taping.”

Reacting to the comments of boxing writers who wanted him to punish Margarito for what he did Pacquiao said: “No, I can’t do that. He is good fighter. He’s big and skilled and also has power. We will do what we are capable of so that we will win for our country.”

Ishe Smith Sets His Sights on Returning James Kirkland

By Ryan Burton

Junior middleweight contender Ishe Smith wants to let the world know he wants to be James Kirkland's opponent when Kirkland returns to the ring for he first time after serving his prison stint. Smith told BoxingScene.com, "my advisor Ray Campbell called me and asked what I thought about fighting James Kirkland and I told him let's do this."

Kirkland is tentatively scheduled to return to the ring on November 6th in Austin, Texas on an HBO doubleheader that may also include Robert Guerrero. Golden Boy is currently looking for opponents for Kirkland and Guerrero. Smith reasoned, "I want to go back to 154 and Kirkland needs to get some rounds in. Sounds like a perfect fit to me."

Smith has recently fought competitive bouts with Fernando Guerrero and Danny
Jacobs. Smith would give the heavy handed Kirkland rounds which is what he needs
to shake off the ring rust

Basically the perfect type of fighter for Benard to pick apart. He doesn't really need all the tricks just counter the shit out of Pascal.

Okay, I'm not gonna bitch about it because initially I thought they were going to shove another Hopkins PPV down our throats. Free is awesome.

Hm, I woulnd't see it as a huge upset if Hopkins won. Pascal can punch, and is pretty explosive and quick, but Hopkins hardly ever gets hit cleanly.

I could also see Pascal out working Hopkins to a decision. Pretty cool fight, bigger risk than reward for Pascal, so props to him for taking on fight.

hopkins is 66 years old though plus he didn't look to good against shot to shit roy jones.

one thing though it will be difficult for bhop to get a decision in Canada. I can see it being like a jermain taylor type of fight as far as scorecards go.

Pascal seems to fight in spurts I wonder how that's going to work against bernard.

Seems to me Pascal is just a brawler doesn't really have that good of boxing skills. If he doesnt even throw a jab its gonna be such a easy win for Hopkins.
