IF YOU WANT IT "CLEAR" YOU SHOULD TRACK IT AS CLEAN AS POSSIBLE. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A SHORT CLEAN RECORDING PATH. KEEP THE CHAIN SHORT. IF I WERE YOU I WOULD PURCHASE A SMALL MIXER THAT HAD GOOD PRE'S (MACKIE). YOU HAVE TO GET WHATS WITHIN YOUR BUDGET. ITS NOT LIKE YOU ARE PLANNING ON RELEASING MATERIAL.

GET SOMETHING SMALL AND WITHIN YOUR PRICE RANGE. LEARN HOW TO USE IT AND UPGRADE LATER.

4GET ABOUT TUBE PRE AMPS AT THIS TIME.

YOU HAVE TO UNDERSTAND, MY MIC PRE'S ARE ON THE SAME INPUT PATH AS MY STEREO INPUT. EVEN IF I HOOK UP A MIXER THE NOISE IS GOING TO BE THERE. THERES NO WAY AROUND IT....TRUST ME ON THAT. I NEED DIGITAL OUT TO THE SOUNDCARD INPUTS SO I CAN KEEP THE WHOLE SIGNAL DIGITAL BECAUSE THE A/D SECTION OF MY SOUND CARD IS TOO NOISY. I WOULD HAVE TO REPLACE IT TO GET USE OF A MIXER. MAYBE YOU DONT UNDERSTAND WHAT KIND OF PIECE IM WORKING WITH. IM NOT WORRIED ABOUT TUBE ANYTHING.... I JUST NEED TO RUN MY MIC SIGNAL TO MY SOUNDCARD WITHOUT USING MY LINE INPUT WETHER IT BE TUBE OR NOT. HOPE THAT MAKES IT EASIER.

NOT AT THIS TIME, THE ONLY UPGRADE I WOULD CONSIDER WOULD BE PRO TOOLS DIGI OO2 (OR 001 AT A NICE PRICE), BECAUSE IF I NEED QUALITY THAT PRISTINE ILL JUST HIT THE STUDIO.

phil let me drop this on you. you are NOT trying to release full albums are you? are you planning on releasing one in the future? are you still in your LEARNING stage (everyone SHOULD be learning everyday)? is a pre amp NEEDED right now?

if you can answer these questions honestly you will know if you need to save or not. personally i would not build a studio around am expensive pre amp. while you are saving for that you will be LACKING in other areas. get something simple to start off with now. master it and move on later. if not you ar egoing to get a piece of high priced gear and BLOW IT OUT because you dont know how to work it.

compliment your chain. just make sure it isnt over kill. your budget is $300. go by what is NEEDED not by what looks COOL or what the next man has or what is INDUSTRY standard.

so what if you have a big nice pre? what if your ROOM is out of tune and your MONITORS are wack? you STILL cant properly hear whats REALLY going on.

id stiil get a 737,look at it this way,how many people spend over 2k on a keyboard only to trade it in a few months later, a 737 is used to track more than vocals, keys, guitars drums etc..

if your gonna be in the business for a while then get it over with
also,if you ever trade it in youl only lose about three hundred dollars from what you paid for it

1. he is still *learning*

2.his budget is $300

3.he also needs a pair of good monitors (i have chopped it up with him in private)

4.he is NOT planning on making any ALBUMS

5.if im not mistaking he said it was a hobby (i could be wrong)

so please who ever is recommending these high end pre's should look at whats being posted. if you cant justify him spending that much money for a pre that will NOT compliment HIS SET UP (look at his sound card, sound modules, instruments etc etc etc) why recommend it??????

does he have guitars? nope.

does he have drums? nope.

thats OVERKILL right now.

phil do yourself a favor and buy a low end pre ($99-300). learn how to use it and when the time comes purchase a better one later. your SPENDING should justify your NEEDS and to be honest you DONT need a high end pre at this point (he is tracking VOCALS).

his budget is $300 so while he is saving up for a high end pre what else is he missing out on? what about his sound card? he is recording to the pc? what about a decent pair of monitors? what if it takes him a year to buy the high end pre? he is going to have to save to buy the next high end piece to compliment it.

PHIL YOU WOULD BE A ****FOOL**** TO BUY A HIGH END PRE RIGHT ABOUT NOW.

@9 mill. ive changed to solvtek tubes and some other brands ot get a different degree of tube distortion. tubes sound different they arent all the same.

the only reason i need a preamp is for replacement of the ones i have DIGITALLY and strictly to eliminate the noise associated with my sound card . thats it, and i liked the dbx model because it has built in effects and compression (another thing im currently in need of) i would eventually like to venture into making an album but only after i feel there is a demand for what i am "producing". right now im just putting together little round the way type things. so i can live with my pres as they are (slightly noisier than i want, thats why im looking for the a/d conversion) but i dont want to pass on a good bargain. until then i can live with the noise reduction process in cool edit. thanks yall. ill be getting good monitors first so i can get my beats crackin a little nicer . i got some old school 15's i purchased from a geeker for 40 bones and the left one has the midrange blown out. the right one has a tweeter blown if that gives you a clue as to my present situation. thanks again for the help and opinions. they are all helpful.
