Married folks get something called BAH (basic allowance for housing) which is money to live off the ship/base. It is different where ever you're stationed at. You can also get it if you're not married, E-4 with over 4 years in or E-5 and above. I get $1,680 a month to live off the ship in San Diego.
Its an allowance so that means it is not taxable. Thats probably the best thing to look forward to when you're in the military, my pay doubled once I made E-5.
I'll be up for E-6 in March then I get out in December of 2010. The only way I'm staying in is if there is shore duty orders in San Diego. I love it down here.

the Navy is one of the branches of the military that u gotta score highest on the ASVAB test and the Marines lets recruits in that got lower scores
totally wrong..i used to be a marine recruiter in san jose off mckee rd by indy. The Marines are the toughest to get into. Army the easiest. hands down

fyi..The Marine Corps is a Department of the Navy.
